The Victory/Vasectomy line is actually more based on the letter V than it is trying to rhyme. V for Victory (the hand symbol), then used to symbolize a pair of scissors giving you the snip. A Performance Bar.
Exactly. Hitman Holla type bar.
Oh shit, great catch
Good catch. I thought it also gave Freddie a chance to flip him off, isn't the back of the V like he held his hand up the same as the middle finger in UK?
@@xaraan Yes in some places giving the Victory Sign either forwards or backwards can be considered the equivalent of giving someone The Finger. President Nixon got into some issues with that if I remember correctly. (Brazil maybe?)
I mean guys, it's also cause Freddy's songs have 'balls' and the most common thing that people think a vasectomy does, is snipping off the balls
Frank Sinatra: You're gay
Freddie Mercury: I'm gay
So was Frank, and I wish Freddie called him out on it (although Frank outted himself w/that Sammy Davis reference, sorta)
FS: "lmao you're gay"
FM: "lmao i'm gay"
Bi. Freddie Mercury was bisexual.
@@DManSammy Which makes it even more dumb of ERB to let Frank insult Freddie with gay bars. What were they thinking? -_-
@@phoenixcierebiej9763 They didn’t have the vocabulary at the time, but he was pan and probably non-binary, on the masc side but certainly not on the pole of the spectrum. (Har-har.) And there is no way he didn’t have relationships with trans people at the time.
This one and Eastwood vs Lee are probably the two outright most vicious and mean ERBs.
Cleopatra vs Monroe, also Harry vs Luke & Joker vs Pennywise are vicous for modern ones
Cough Cough Romeo and Juliet vs Bonnie and Clyde Cough Cough
Lost so many children we should call you Miss Carriage is the most unacceptably vicious thing ERB have ever written.
I love it, but you don't do that in real life.
Agreed, I will say the original Vader/Hitler ones have some dirty bars, but they’re not as straight mean as these.
Cough cough..... Darwin vs ketchum
The funniest part of this whole battle is that Freddie Mercury was apparently almost exactly this savage in real life.
The story about his fight with Sid Vicious is *delightful.* 😈
@@TheLastGarou wasn’t really a fight. He grabbed him and threw him out.
@@Dctctx And made a vicious little comment about his name. They exchanged words, and Freddie's were better. The funniest part is that tough little Sid didn't know that gay Freddie used to box, and worked out quite regularly.
i wish he kept his savagery by his second verse, the only """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""diss"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" he does to frank sinatra is the kiss my ass line but even then its more used as a flex, just like anything in that verse

yesss, mine too
The only thing they did wrong with this battle is that it was too short
Ive never watched this one before, its pretty good. Not disappointed
not really. the portrayal of frank was awful, it was all just homophobic jokes. he was nothing like that
For real though can we just take a second to appreciate Scru's Christopher Walken impression, holy shit xD
More amens than 1992 had amen breaks, and for those of you don’t know, the amen break was EVERYWHERE then.

The "soundtrack to a vasectomy" stuck with me so hard that every time I hear "My Way" somewhere, I picture some dude reluctantly waiting for his vasectomy surgery while this song plays in the background.
xD
While ERB was with Maker Studios, which was owned by Disney, the powers that be started exerting censorship and control downward through the layers of ownership, once the channel started to really take off. This is why the "Stan Lee vs. Jim Henson" ERB was so significant, that was their kiss-off to the House of Mouse, when they went fully independent.
Underrated comment
Although I think Frankie was vicious af against Freddie, I think Freddie was so much more effective at reflecting anything said against him. Frankie also had a quite small mag of ammo to put against Freddie. He only really pointed out his dress, teeth, and that he had AIDS. Freddie showed a much more varied range of insults. Nonetheless, Frankie's bars need to be much more appreciated than they are by most reaction channels covering this. Though, ultimately in my eyes, Freddie is the winner here.
Like the man said, "You think I haven't heard those things before?" Such things might have made Elton cry, but Freddie was like, "Right, what else you got, you old c***?"
while i thought freddie won aswell yall overrate the way he talked about the content
his line about frank being related to the mafia coulda had so much more done with it but it feels like a throwaway line and i find myself forgetting it was in the battle
Watching these with Scru is like watching them again for the first time.
Hearing the technical break down is educational for someone who knows zero of battle and raps. And Scru, I gotta admit that watching your face as you react is the best thing ever man! Keep doing whatcha doing.
I wholeheartedly agree with you, I am learning so much about the arts of the battle, beyond just the obvious word-play, puns and performance bars.
Honestly watching these with Scru is an unmitigated delight. Keep them up man.
I think Freddy won that one. Sinatra's attacks can basically be boiled down to "you look funny/you don't dress classy enough" and "you're gay/you died of AIDS", whereas Freddy had punches about Sinatra not going to war, the Mafia connection, Sinatra's music/acting/dancing abilities, and of course the haymaker of "you had a hit song called My Way, but someone else wrote it". Also the Sammy Davis thing feels kinda like a Sinatra self-own the way he phrased it.
I always felt the same way myself. Frank keeps going back to the same well, like you said. And "Hey, I'm not homophobic or racist, cos look... he's my gay black friend" really doesn't sell the point.
I feel like it's just because Freddie is more likeable in real life, almost a martyr. If we take the bias out of the battle, boiling down bars to the meaning isn't doing it justice. His lines are very creative in terms of phrasing, they are snappy and funny (at least, for me), no matter what they boil down to. Freddie just sort of names things. Performance-wise - sure, but as a battle - nah.
@@yorkieandthechihuahua Sinatra did a LOT for the civil rights movement -- among other things, he refused to perform in places that would not let Sammy Davis Jr in, and also insisted on equal pay for POC musicians in his orchestras, among many other things. He was very active, politically.
disagree, as people, freddy is more likeable and also his performance is more epic, but bar for bar, as battle rap, not as a popularity contest, sinatra got it, not by too much, but I agree with scru on this one, because even if the things sinatra uses as insults are pretty simple, they still hit hard as battle bars, even if in real life calling someone gay is not even a bad thing, the way sinatra frames it, it is vicious, like for example the butthole roulette bar, making fun of someone for dying of aids when it was not known irl is kinda wack, but in a battle, it works, and the sammy davis I think is more the comedy aspect of erb or maybe even the history part
Not going to war is a diss?
Can we talk about how they got an ENTIRE PERSON and dressed them to look EXACTLY like Sammy Davis Jr. for like two seconds? Take a moment to admire their commitment!
Okay, I've noticed this comment the last time or two I watched this video, and I can't hold it in.
The way you emphasize 'entire person' is making me go: "What, should they have gotten half a person instead? that's not how discounts work!"
And it's the chocolate rain dude lmao
I'm sure that with Tay Zonday, all they had to do was ask. He seems to be cool that way.
See, and I think Freddie got this one no contest. Frank's bars were savage and bloody, but they were superficial. They looked bad and sounded bad, but they didn't hit any vitals. Freddie shrugged them off and went for the throat by calling him out for being a draft dodging coward, for not writing his hit song, for his pathetic vocal range and lack of performance, and for being a wiseguy. Those were vitals, cutting Frank at the core of who he is by exposing.
As far as last rounds, Frank's last round can be boiled down to "you died because you were a had a lot of sex and got aids". Freddie's was a complete rebuttal of that by giving his death more importance to the whole world by exposing how dangerous aids is. That's just facts.
In the end, it's just like Freddie said in his first line: "you think I haven't heard those things before?" Very little Frank said in the battle couldn't have been said by someone else. To me, Frank needed to swag more to make me care about what he has to say, because going for low hanging fruit leaves you open to exactly what Freddie did: deflect him for being another dude in a boring suit who didn't bring anything original to the table.
My man Frank brought Great Value macaroni salad to the potluck and had to borrow the spoon to scoop it out with.
Your last line has me in stitches😭😭😭😭
@@longlivethebook5877 that last line was amazing 😭😭
@@longlivethebook5877 someone needs to make that a saying 🤣
Ion care it’s the way Frank said it you can say “you had butt sex and died” but that doesn’t take away the bar being brutal Frank to me won he had more punches and they were heavy reguardless of the topic it’s a battle you hit on any type of weaknesss which Frank did
@@LosHomiesDre yeah but Freddie embraced it saying you can't hurt me so those punches turned from hay makers to jabs that sere deflected
The "rat" line wasn't a reference to snitching... it was referring the Rat Pack, a group of entertainers from the 1960's that included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford.
Yeah, he quickly mentioned that while also saying that the line could be flipped to mean snitching.
I am always impressed by when Scru goes into his nerd bag (music nerd for this one). He was able to talk about Frank and Fredie even though both were before his time (heck they were before my time too)
Frank comes out with roast bars. He's making fun of him and that's about it. It's like some kind of after dark comedy special.
Freddy takes it personal, and says 'Well if that's how you want it.'. He comes out swinging with a slow sorrowful build, almost to show how personal he took it, then bursts out into full energy and style. He's throwing slug after slug after slug, super aggressive and very personal. He flips Franks roasts and empowers himself with them, tears Frank down, just goes at him.
I think Frank's expectations really show with his reaction in the second bar. 'Easy there!' This went harder than he was expecting, and he's certainly not putting up any character assassination. His class act routine is his whole persona, so he immediately goes on the defence, ending off with something honestly kinda hits me as passive. 'I ain't got anything against what you do, but you sure as hell came out a loser'. It's a nasty line, but all of it comes across almost like he's afraid to let slip that class act face.
Freddy is nobody but himself tho. He tastes weakness in the air and comes right back out, shutting down the one attempt at a hit Frank had and ending the battle on his own terms.
Freddy won. Hands down.
Frank poked him with a stick, Freddie just.. ate him. Fucking ate him.
Gonna give this one to Freddie. His last round was a solid rebuttal to Frank's hardest line. Also, THAT BEAT!
Before David Bowie was famous, he worked as a lyricist in London, and wrote the first lyrics for Frank Sinatra's 'My Way,' in 1968. Publishers threw his lyrics away, so he retaliated by writing the song, 'Life on Mars?' On the back of the album 'Hunky Dory' (which Life on Mars was in), David put, "Inspired by Frankie" with an arrow pointing to the song, Life on Mars.
miss David Bowie :(
@@mariamenegalli2321 Same here, he was something else entirely. :(
I didn't know that and that only makes Freddie's line about it better
Wow I never knew this.
When Sinatra heard the bell, he went and threw a strong right straight on Freddy's face. But when Freddy heard the second round, he went in and gave him a vicious right hook.
Freddy gave him a brutal combinations
Freddy in round 2: "So you wanted blood on the floor after... say less"
This is one of my all time favorites, they did get very vicious. I think Adam vs Eve is also just as vicious and should be the next one you do
I didnt like adam and eve so much because the references didnt fit the setting. I mean, her complaining about fantasy football? Yeah they hit hard and I laughed, but it didnt really WORK for them, it was a generic husband and wife rap battle.
This
Yes, finally someone agreeing with me!
@@chrishubbard64 Even though considered one of the weakest ERB's, Adam vs Eve is just all in good fun. The way they change up Sinatra's character here is insulting. Even for a battle rap.
@@chrishubbard64 That's kinda the point tho
I never realized until just now that the way they did a call and response on the word "epic" after the battle was a reference to the way Freddie Mercury did his vocal warm up with the crowd at concert. Amazing attention to detail.
This is an amazing battle, the character design, the bars, the beat in the background, I love your breakdown of the lyrics.
One of the best beats, agreed. So is Napoleon vs Napoleon.
I dunno, Frank did have a vicious and strong second round but to me Freddie immediately defanged his last(and strongest) blow from that round. Now Freddie didn't really add much on top of that in his second, so to me their second rounds kinda just cancel each other out, leaving it to their first rounds, and I think Freddie's first was better than Frank's so I always give it to Freddie overall.
Freddie had no disses in his second round, definitely does NOT cancel anything out
@@denisucuuu a strong rebuttal cancels out disses. Frank’s best blow in his second round was the butthole roulette diss, and Freddie’s taking one for both teams line immediately wipes away any power that one potentially had.
Eh huge stretch that saying 'i took one for both teams' cancels out the diss.
@@lewd2851 he's one of the 1st icon of both aids and gay, so no.
@@farrel_ra So? Like saying "I took one for both teams" is a weak ass rebuttal. Compare that to Roosevelt vs Churchill "My parents died when I was young and it was morbid, but at least they didn't ditch me when they were alive like yours did." That is a rebuttal.
You, Scru my dude, are 100% correct. ERB started in 2010. In 2014 Disney bought Maker Studios. This video was made between those two times in 2012.
The Victory/Vasectomy line was more a visual pun than a rhyme and to me showcases why Freddie won this. The V for his victory became scissors for Frank's vocal vasectomy AND is also the UK's version of the middle finger so he also got in a "fuck you". As talented as Frank was, he was a one trick pony. Freddie, however, layered his genius in everything he did, even his disses. 😉
Also it references his previous line of "My music has balls"
When Freddie says "they're the anthems of victory" just gets me so fucking hyped!
Also, I'm a black brazilian guy. Can someone please explain the "Guinea Dago Figaro" racism thing to me?
"Guinea and dago are two racial slurs to Italians... It's a reference to the "Galileo" section of the Queen song "Bohemian Rhapsody", in which the line is "Galileo, Galileo, Galileo, Figaro!" "Guinea" stands for the Guinea African Coast, implying Italians are not white, and "dago" is a racial slur which can be used to refer to Italian people."
@@System_Anomaly O.O
@@System_Anomaly Guinea is also a play on guinea pigs (the rodents that can be kept as pets), implying that Frank was just a pet to the mafia.
It's interesting how "south america gets horny" is an amazing verse when you think how much success he made here
Guinea is an ethnic slur towards Italians and people of Italian heritage, as is dago. And the line is parodying Bohemian Rhapsody’s “Galileo (x3) Fígaro” line. Perfect musical reference, but seriously, the ethnic slurring and queer slurring was shocking AF and I am no glad they don’t do that these days.
Oh yeah, and yes, Freddie was Persian and a racial minority in Britain, and dealt with a lot of overt racism in his life, whereas Frank was still white AF and was incredibly racist. So yeah, Freddie escalated, but Frank went WAY PAST the line. Because he’s white, with a small asterisk, and If you want to say Mercury’s white, his whiteness comes with TWO big fuckin’ asterisks.
So that’s how you break that down.
I think you’re one of the best people, as an actual skilled rapper, to make a tier list once you get through these ERBs so far.
Yes! This is one of my faves. You should do Dr who vs Doc brown.
Oh yes! Seconding!
Outta your damn mind giving it to Frank. All of his bars boil down to appearance and promiscuity, while Freddy shreds Frank's entire career and character, crushes him with his very first line and adds nails to the coffin with the rest of his verse. Then Sinatra comes back and his first bar is a self-burn? C'mon. Nothing Sinatra says sticks to Mercury. This is one of the most one-sided ERBs, right along Oppenheimer's domination of Thanos.
You’ll never guess who he gave that thanos battle to
I looked up what “Guinea Dago” means.
As an Italian, I should be offended,
but as a Queen fan, I can’t bring myself to switch sides.
what does it mean
@@sethdiedalongtimeago Guinea refers to the Guinea African Coast, implying Italians don’t count as white people, and Dago is simply a racial slur for Italians.
@@pjdougherty6442i also think there is a other diss in there because he's basically calling Frank a Guinea pig, which is known as s pet. So he's s pet for the mafia
Should do Thomas Edison vs Nikola Tesla! ❤️
Or Lewis and Clark vs Bill and Ted
Sinatra’s crew were called The Rat Pack. That’s the rodent reference. There was Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, and Joey Bishop. At one point there was Peter Lawford, but he had a falling out with Sinatra. If you don’t know who they all are, google them, they were all HUGE.
Also wanna say that Mercury jokes Sinatra can’t act, but he was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of a heroin addict in a movie called The Man with the Golden Arm. Kind of high praise for a singer turned actor back then.
I can't be objective because Queen is my favorite band, but that last line, referencing Death on Two Legs is one of the best in the whole ERB history
Death on Two Legs is Queen's best song don't @ me
@@roddorfj Weird choice, but totally respectable
The early ERBs were probably more vicious because everybody knows who they are. The characters didn't have to have introductory bars to establish themselves before tearing into their opponents.
Freddie's first needed a second to get rolling, but holy shit when the drums and echoes kicked in it was epic. Sounded just like a Queen song.
Someone finally realizes how crazy Frank Sinatra was in this battle.
Not even. It was all gay jokes and teeth jokes. Mercury reversed that with the pants bar. Frank never said anything else
@@mujenkai a hole roulette one is pretty nasty tho IMO. but in general, I think Freddie got that.
Sinatra used Mercury being gay in his bars more than three times. Mercury insulted a lot more about him and didn't cover the same thing twice.
@@christophkogler6220 Agreed. It was over for Frank after the "guinea dago" bar. Plus, Freddy swagged on him with his vocal style.
@@christophkogler6220 less about him being gay and more about how he died

I was just thinking about this ERB while watching your playlist again🔥🔥🔥
I’m late but glad to see the resuming ERB reactions you’re legit the best reactor of them
I always theorized my the reason why they toned down the pure savagery and usually save it for the knockout punch was a want to lean i to the historical/educational aspect. Fights like these are fantastic but it’s also essentially reading out a “worst of” list for beloved figures. Nowadays theres a lot more pure info that gets people interested in figures they might not even know otherwise.
Honestly I’m more of a Frank fan than a Freddy fan but I couldn’t help myself, I think no matter what the absolute hype of Freddy’s verses just win me over all the time

One of my favourite things about this battle is how Freddie came *swingin'* with the rebuttals.

Freddie: Actually I brought awareness to an invisible disease that has overall benefitted thousands of people
Frank: You're super gay
Freddie: Yes, I am.
Frank: You should dress better
Freddie: People literally take me more seriously than you in women's pants.
Frankie came out of the gate trying to punch Freddie's head off, but he kept making fun of the same like, 3 things whereas Freddie kinda broke him down to an atomic level.
More like Freddy kept throwing out lyrical rope-a-dopes, rolling then unleashing savage counterblows.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Shout out to the work ethic! Scru Face cranking these videos out FOR THE PEOPLE. Happy Xmas man, love the work!
My one gripe with this battle is that the music uses the clap-clap-stomp from the Queen song We Will Rock You, which I feels subconsciously pulls you towards Freddie right out of the gate. Also, watch the Making Of video of this battle by the ERB team, it has some truly hilarious moments in it.

It's Freddy All day. Frank's entire rap boils down to "You're gay, you don't wear a suit, and you look funny". While Freddy hit Frankie in his SOUL.
