- We get a lot of questions from viewers about how many of our woodcuts were made. Well, when Bill Gaylord (a former museum docent) acquired the Lewis Winter Collection, he not received 27 small boxes of woodcuts and electrotypes, but also a small box of tools for carving woodcuts.
These tools were used by Lewis Winter at his wood and photo engraving business at 627 J Street in Sacramento, California from 1888 to 1910. Lewis Winter carved a lot of woodcuts for advertisements in local Sacramento newspapers.
In this video, Howard discusses the tools kept in an old cigar box in our print shop exhibit. We do not make woodcuts but we appreciate the ones we have.

I would love a live demonstration on the differences between those handmade chisels compared to what we have now
These are not much different than what people use for linoleum block engraving! Maybe the handles are a little different.
@@SacramentoHistoryMuseumThe handles on the old chisels seem like the perfect size to fit in your palm so your fingers are closer to the surface, modern lino cutters keep your fingers farther away from the blade which can make it harder to get really fine cuts.
I do a little woodcut printing and am always looking out for yard sale and pawnshop treasures.
A few weeks ago while traveling through Branson, MO I stopped at a pawnshop and found several woodcut and copper blocks with advertisements from around 100 years ago... So I bought all of them for my collection.
What an excellent find! 👍👍👍
Wow. All those different edges, shapes, and sizes. Those are actually pretty cool.
Keep up all the good work I love watching old job videos
Thank you Howard and Jared for sharing with us! 👍🏻👍🏻 all the time!! I am learning everyday something new🧠👍🏻
For me,every videos from this channel must push to maximum resolution (highest quality) for the best details i can see.
Thanks for every sharing here. ✌🏼👌🏼👍🏼🇲🇾
Amazing work
Reminds me of summer camp back in the mid 1960's and cutting soft wood blocks to print with. Thanks for the education.
A treasure 🙏🏻
Thank you for educating us on the fine art of wood cutting
Literally cutting wood!! 🤯 and yet brilliant 🧠🧠
Thank you for sharing I’ve never seen the tools before!

How beautiful! Digital is all about getting things done quickly and efficiently, but there is a beauty that cannot be put into simple words in working with handtools❤.
Handtools are love and pure art in my humble opinion.
You guys and your place seems to be coming out of a magical place or from a fantasy place out of this violent superficial world
Those do look similar to the lino tools, though the tape wrapped one is closest in shape handle-wise to what I've used (a couple times, not an expert by any means).
Also the old wooden cigar boxes were nigh indestructible, seems a great way to keep the collection together (kind of like a danish butter cookie tin for sewing supplies 😂)
I LOVE YOU HOWARD
All the wood creaking sounds lmao.
Someone may have already done this, I'm sorry.
How much wood could a woodcut cut if a woodcut could cut wood?
Massive letter.
