    You are the only one who took the confusion out of this process. I believe I have it right now. Here are my list of steps I got from your video.
    Step 1: Home machine
    Step 2: In Lightburn (LB) in Device screen click on “Enable Z” and “Optimize Z moves”
    Step 3: Move laser to center with jog control (click on Move Tab in top right box for jog control)
    Step 4: Raise laser in bracket to it’s highest position (bottom of bracket even with bottom of laser)
    Step 5: Lower using jog control till it rattles (lowest position)
    Step 6: Loosen laser holding screws and lower laser to 25mm above the honeycomb
    Step 7: Go to Home position (laser should go up and over)
    Step 8: Measure distance from honeycomb to bottom of laser and record the distance = 73mm
    Step 9: Subtract distance in step 6 from the measurement in step 8 which is 73 - 25 = 48mm
    Step 10: Measure thickness of material in mm and enter into the Material field in the Cut/Layer box
    Step 11: To engrave click on black layer in the Layer/Cut box on the right and enter 48 in Z offset. To cut click on red layer add depth of cut to the 48 and enter into Z offset field
    It's a starting point and some fine adjustment may be needed to get the sharpest resutls.

    Hi, thank you so much for this wonderful video. Finally someone able to explain how this laser works. I have a question, what kind of compressor are you using? I bought the Ortur one, but I'm not convinced of the airflow. Thanks Luca

      Hi, lucadiveglia2150; thank you for your comment.
      I am glad you found my video helpful.
      About the compressor, I use a 9l oil-free compressor by Vevor, and it has worked flawlessly for about a year now.
      It is quiet and effective; I allow the compressor to rest every 40 to 60min of continuous operation to avoid overheating. After all, it is not a professional machine.
      I additionally arranged it inside a homemade enclosure using Rockwall panels to make it quieter and avoid troubles with the neighbours.
      Below are some links to check out the compressor and other accessories you might need. Consider that a water trap is a must to minimize the condense getting into the line.

    Hey, Do you know what is the reason that motor contunue turning while the head reach the end position ( see 13-23 till 13-26) - the head goes up and then it reached the home point , but it is clearly hear that motor is trying to turn, so it won't stop in home point .

    Followed this exactly and used the same stock thickness. It even worked out that my home was the same as his at 66mm. Definitely will not cut through on 1 pass of 500mm/m at 95%. Also seems to be dangerously close to the material where it will rub if any imperfections. I can’t figure this out so I just turned off Z for now and am manually adjusting with a ruler.

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi, thank you for your comment.
      The nozzle should be about 5mm from the surface of your material when engraving, and less when cutting if you set a Z offset.
      Does it cut fine when manually focused? Is the cutting line thick? Perhaps the laser module has a slightly different focus height.
      What air pump are you using? In my video review, I used a proper compressor.
      Let me know

    Great video and information!! Hoping for some advice. I have the neje 4 max with the extensions. It seems my y axis is mirrored and it cuts in the opposite direction of the layout in the lightburn software. Thank you!

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před rokem

      Hi, @arranp1693; thank you for your comment.
      The mirrored Y axis may be caused by two issues:
      - The origin for the machine must be set in the lower left corner in device settings. The home is on the top left, but the origin is on the lower left.
      - The Step Direction Invert is incorrect. Go to the GRBL Configuration or Machine settings and look for the parameter $3; check on my page the number to set up to invert the axis whathowwhysolution.com/lasergrbl-and-lightburn-why-my-engravings-come-mirrored/
      I hope it helps

    • @arranp1693
      @arranp1693 Před rokem

      @Middle Room Workshop thank you for your response! I have put the origin to the bottom left but the laser only recognized the upper half of the bed. I have the cut design at the bottom of the perimeters on lightburn but it reads on the bed as midway. I tried changing the $3=2 to invert the y axis but it causes the laser to smash into the ends and do a load other terrible things.

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před rokem

      @arranp1693 thank you for your feedback; you may have the G54 set to a different Y value.
      Please connect the machine, then type $# in the console. This will show you all the Eprom Set values and check the G54, pay attention to the first 2 sets of numbers which must be 0.00; if not type G10 L2 P1 X0.0 Y0.0 Z(your value).
      This will set the coordinate system to 0,0 and the Z value to what you need.
      Make sure to work in absolute coordinate.
      Let me know if that works.
      Ciao

    Hi, this is a great video and if my Max 4 worked like this it would be awesome! However, my Max 4 appears to behave differently and I wondered if you might be able to help? I have followed the setup exactly as described. I determined the focal length on my E80 to be 24mm, and my distance from honeycomb to laser is 66mm... so the difference is 42mm. When I enter an offset of "42 - thickness of workpiece" into the offset for the layer(s) it works perfectly. However, when I code the GCode entry (G10 L2 P1 Z-42) the coding is accepted, and $# shows [G54:0.000,0.000,-43.000,0.000], but when running the job, the Z axis does not move down at all. I've rehomed, powered off/on and checked the firmware and version of Lightburn (v1.6.00). I'm not running in absolute mode and I have double checked that Z-axis is still enabled - I can still jog it up and down... Do you have any clues as to what else I could look for?

    • @stevegodfrey6063
      @stevegodfrey6063 Před měsícem

      Ah hah... noting a comment below where someone mentioned "absolute coords"... As soon as I switched to absolute it works like a charm! Brilliant. SO it doesn't work like this in "user origin" or "current position" mode. My previous Laser experience is limited to an Atomstack A5 with no limit switches, so I have just got totally used to "current position". I am now learning how good absolute coords are!! 🙂 Once again MRW great video and very helpful (once I realised I need absolute coords!)

    Is there a way to have the z axis raise when burn is completed like it did before changing the G54 #?

    • @robertplante8822
      @robertplante8822 Před 5 měsíci

      Just put G0 Z45 in the Devices Settings window in the End GCode window under the GCode tab. You can also add G0 X*** Y*** to the position you want to finish.

  • @danamoose1234
    @danamoose1234 Před 7 měsíci

    I'm having trouble with the z axis raising on its own when a job is initiated.
    I have tried disabling the z axis and any z axis offset in lightburn but it still raises even when creating a test grid or framing.
    It doesn't do it when just moving the positions manually.
    Any ideas what could be wrong?

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi, thank you for your comment.
      The Z axis moves to the 0 position, to then sink again to the right offset. I guess you have some custom coordinate set for the G54. G54 is not triggered for a manual jog.
      Type $# in the console and check the line that says G54, if there is some value other than 0 for the Z axis then you need to set it to 0.
      To do that type:
      G10 L2 P1 Z0
      and enter.
      I hope it helps
      Ciao

    I love this video and it makes handling the "Z Offset" make so much more sense. However, after I ran the G10 L2 P1 Z-43 and the G54 is changed to:
    (G54 :0.000,0.000,-43.000,0.000) NOTHING HAPPENS (i.e., the Z axis does not drop at all) when I run a print job. The only way that I can get the Z axis to drop is to put the 43 number directly into the cut/layer settings. Is there some other setting somewhere that has to be "turned on" to get the NEJE MAX 4 to respect the change to the G54 data change?

      Hi, I realise you posted some time ago, so you may not see this, but I wondered if you resolved this? I have exactly the same problem. Set the GCODE and have the correct values indicated when using $#, but when I make a cut nothing happens on the Z axis, the laser performs the activity, but the Z axis does not drop it stays in the top position! :-(

    Ciao!
    Ho da poco comprato il Neje (mi sto avvicinando ora a questo mondo), ma sto avendo difficoltà con il focus
    Ho seguito bene o male le istruzioni, ma non riesco proprio a fare il taglio di un multistrato da 6mm
    Qualche consiglio?

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před 10 měsíci

      Ciao, @danieled4849; grazie per il tuo commento.
      Innanzitutto andrei a verificare che la macchina e l'ottica siano apposto. Per fare ciò ti consiglierei di resettare il G54 così che l'asse Z non si muove da solo e lasciare lo spessore del materiale a zero.
      Dopo di ciò regola tu l'altezza del modulo manualmente rilasciando la morsa; dovresti lasciare dai 23 ai 25mm tra il fondo piatto del modulo e la superficie del materiale per essere perfettamente a fuoco sulla stessa.
      Fai un incisione di prova e verifica che lo spessore della linea di incisione e abbastanza fina; altrimenti abbassa il modulo di qualche millimetro (2-3mm) e prova a tagliare il compensato da 6mm. Come parametri farei 95% 150mm/min oppure 2 passate alla stessa potenza ma velocita 250mm/min.
      Se la verifica ha successo, in quel caso devi verificare che il calcolo per inserire il valore Z al parametro G54 é corretto e che includi lo spessore del materiale correttamente nel campo "Materiale (mm)" nel Tab "Tagli / Livelli", più inserisci un offset di 2-3mm nel layer che usi per tagliare il compensato da 6mm.
      Fammi sapere
      Ciao

    this is still confusing on z axis ... at the 10:58 mark to engrave the z offset is 66-23-3+1=41 yet you set the engraving at 44 ???

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi, thank you for your comment.
      The reason is that, with the Z axis enabled you have the Material option in the Layers tab; therefore, the thickness is computed by Lightburn, without having to manually input it yourself.
      I hope it helps,

    Does anyone knows why is my Max 4 bouncing off when touches limit switch on Z

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi, snjezanzivak1632; thank you for your comment.
      The bouncing is normal when homing or the homing switches are triggered by the machine's movement.
      Most likely, your machine is set to home the z-axis at the end of a project.
      This is, however, something that must be coded in and, therefore, stored in the machine or an added Gcode footer block.
      Please check these two things using Lightburn:
      - Go to "Device Settings"> "GCode" and check if there is anything in the "End GCode" text box.
      - In the Console Type $#, ensure all parameters are set to 0.000 with particular attention to G28 and G30. (G54 should show the custom value you have set)
      Let me know so I can try to guide you further.
      Ciao

      Batko.....Do you have any social media where i can send you video of this problem.its not the problem when its homing. When its homing its ok it touches limit switch and it moves few mm down and it goes home only when its done with work its problem. When its done with engarving or cutting module goes up 45mm it hits limit switch hard and its like it wants to go up more but it cant then bounces of limit switch few times and it stops....i check limit switch with multimeter its working
