I've watched this 4 times now, I think I'm ready to start tailoring some of my overly huge concert t-shirts now. My mom passed earlier this year and she created sewing and quilting crafts for decades. I've been teaching myself to sew to honor her life. I repaired a ripped patio umbrella with the sewing machine, and now I want to move onto tailoring my t-shirts!
Awwww I love this 💕😊🎀🥰 Happy sewing in mothers memory 💕
This is amazing. Not having to remove and reattach the sleeves takes out all the anxiety that resizing a tshirt was giving me. Thank you so much!
Your welcome! Happy sewing! I love this method & I hope you do too !
Ditto this, so much! As a newbie, perusing the google results as I try to teach myself, this was such a relief to find.
But this doesn't take anything in through the shoulders/neckline.
@@berylvanheukelom6046 that's the trade-off!
This is the best common-sense alteration advice I have seen!
Thank you for using a regular sewing machine! Most tutorials assume us newbies have a overlock machine.
Your very welcome!
You really don't need an overlock/Serger on t-shirt fabric since it doesn't fray.
Dang, this is much easier than doing it the way I found in another video where the sleeves were removed. Glad I found this one before I started. And, DANG I wish I had a sewing machine. My hand-stitching is getting more phenomenal, tho'. But, aaaaaarrrgh! _hand-stitching_
Thank you for explaining everything as you were doing it!! I’m still very new to sewing so it’s really nice to have someone explain the little details like back stitching and stuff too.
Awesome 👏 thank you for watching. I hope all your shirts fit now!
💯 Very helpful! Very clear and concise instructions and excellent video angles to see exactly what you are doing. Excellent teaching! Very grateful. 😍
Thank you so so so much for this!!!! I thrifted some cool shirts the other day and was disappointed by how big they were on me, but this worked absolutely perfectly. Super easy and very manageable, despite my complete lack of basically any sewing experience😅😅
This is great to hear you where able to size your shirts 👚 Thank you for watching 🎀
I’m a beginner and I was able to crop and take in a shirt using this method ❤️🙃 thank you so much!
Wonderful!
4 years later, and im so thankful I found this video. I've never sewn or altered a single thing in my entire life, but im a 6'3, skinny guy, and im beyond fed up with all my clothes not fitting me. I have a closet full of tshirts I like, but most of them are too baggy on me, and I feel like baggy clothes are a bad look for my frame. I thought about taking my stuff into an alteration shop, but I'm not exactly working with a 6 figure income, so I decided to give it a shot. I've watched a few other videos, but yours is by far the best one, with the best technique, that I've found. Thank you!! You make it look so simple. Hopefully I won't completely wreck all the shirts in my closet 😂😂😂
You can do this! Start with a thrifted one or your least favorite one. It’s going to feel so good having a shirt that fits.
Thanks!! Even though it seems so simple as a beginner sewist sometime it's hard to figure out how to do these tasks! I also didn't realize the hem zigzag should go on and off the shirt!
Corrie Side me either !
same here corrie such a basic thing but you just don't know when you are new huh
Thanks. This is just what I needed. I bought a T-shirt on line on final sale and it is the largest small I’ve ever seen! Glad you had this post
You are so welcome! 🎀
omg thank you for this because all the others videos the people were cutting the sleeve completely off and having to sew them back on which was to much work! your way is much better!🙌🏾❤️
Brittany Jackson your welcome! Thank you for watching!!! 🎀🎀🎀
Thank you for this tutorial. So many "simple" t shirt tutorials require you to "have a shirt you already like the fit of" to make into a pattern. This will be MUCH easier than struggling to find a shirt that fits first and taking it apart.
Woohoo 🎉 happy to hear this 🥰. Thank you for watching.
Great process, since I don't have a dress form/buddy I'm going to lay it flat on my cutting table and place a t-shirt in the size I want on top of it and trace around it with 3/8" seam allowance and then serger it. Thank you, this is MUCH easier than I've done in the past with taking off the sleeves!
You're so welcome! Send me pics of your cool t-shirt that fits! Thanks for watching! 🥰
Thank you for this suggestion, I was desperately tryin gto figure out how AWKWARD it was going to be doing this alone, but you have just solved my biggest problem. :)
Super easy tutorial! I resized a large t-shirt into a very flattering small and it fits perfectly. Thank you!
Wonderful! 🎀❤️🎀❤️🎀
I’m a novice but this looks super easy! Thanks so much. My daughter bought me a T-shirt for Christmas, it has special logo for the cafe where she works but it’s massive on me, especially as I’ve been dieting! I felt anxious and was going to take it to a dressmaker but no need to now! I’m tall so won’t be taking it up - only in! ❤ Thanks again!
Very welcome 🤗 Happy to help! It’s going to feel great knowing you took in the shirt & can wear it now.
Thank you for such a clear, simple and well done explanation of how to make a t-shirt smaller!
Your welcome 🤗
What a brilliant video! You are such a bright, creative Soul - I wish more tailors were like you.
Awwww thank you 😊
You have no idea how long i've been looking for a video like this... as crazy as that sounds!
Woohoo! Now your shirts will fit you! Best feeling in the world right? Send me pictures of your projects @sewanastasia on instagram and I'll post them on my stories! Happy Sewing!
I managed to fix my favourite shirt using your hemming method. Thank you so much! 💞💞💞
Awesome 👏
Wow you explain things so well. I think I can actually do this project.
Jennifer Marriott thank you & you can totally do this!!!! Happy sewing!
This was such a great video! Just thrifted some new shirts that are too big and gave myself the challenge of resizing them. Thanks for the detailed process, hopefully it won’t be that much of a challenge!
You can do it!!! Send pics!!! 🎀💕🎀🎀 thank you for watching
Really ingenious. I've 3 new tee shirts I bought as small, UK size 10, they're too big, so perfect timing.
I'm in Cornwall in Southern England staying with friends so next week, I'll get them done.
Thank you so much.
I found you recently, so am still playing catch up with your Vlogs. 👌👍😁
Janet Rodgers woohoo! The perfect fit is everything!
Omgosh thank you so much for showing how to hem the bottom. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong!
Woohoo 🙌🏻 your totally welcome! Send pics! I Will post on insta!
Thank you so much for this! It worked on my blouse even if it is a button down. It looks AWESOME and now I can wear it!!
This is excellent! Send pics!!! Thank you for watching.
'Sew' glad I found you! You are adorable and talented. I've been sewing for more years than you have been in the planet and I love finding a new and beautiful way to problem solve. Rock on, little sister, I'll be watching💚1¢
Penny Miller 🎀🎀🎀🎀 Thank you . Happy Sewing!
Thank you so much for this great tutorial. Going to try this on my very first attempt at resizing something myself. Def subscribed
Hope it worked out! Thank you for watching.
Thank you for creating this video! It's so helpful! 😊
Very welcome 🤗
wow, most efficient method i've seen. Thank you.
Very welcome 🤗 happy sewing & thank you for watching.
Super straight forward tutorial, you’re awesome 💚👍🏽
This was great and simple...my kind of video since I cannot sew yet. Would love to be a part of your sewing class should you decide to do one live on FB or yt.
You're so welcome! You should just give it a try! It's the best way to learn and can be so fun.
I do virtual private lessons, and they can go really well. That way I can provide 1-on-1 attention. Just check out my website!
I tried having people join classes virtually, but it's easier to participate in the class setting in person.
I just want to say, I've always been terrified of using a sewing machine because it looks so daunting but you made it look so simple and easy, thank you!
I'm so glad to hear that I could help you overcome your fear of using a sewing machine! It's really not as daunting as it seems once you get the hang of it. Keep practicing and you'll become a pro in no time!
I just found this on 01/01/23!! It has made my project so simple and easy to understand! Thank you so much!!
Excellent 👏💕happy sewing!!!!
Perfect! Just the tutorial I need to resize some favorite tees since losing weight!

Subscribing! I was so nervous to alter my tees sincce I've lost weight but now I'm ready to do this. What an amazing common sense method for altering shirts
Your very welcome. Happy sewing! 🎀🎀🎀
Yes, I have lost weight too and a couple of my faves are now swimming on me, this will solve that!
Thank you! I recently got some of my dads old t shirts and they don’t fit me well, I will be trying this 😄

😅thanks so much, this is the most easiest method so far l have seen.
Thank you for watching. I am happy to hear that.
I love your Tailoring Teacher way
Wow, thank you! ❤️🎀🥰
You did not try it on, I was waiting for the grand reveal on you. So I can get an idea and see IF I should do the same as well 😑
Oh sorry. Well yes of course it works. :) Did you try it ?
@@SewAnastasia starting a 'try it on' chant here lol
yeah, a before/ after would be a great addition (maybe for future videos, though I know this is over a year old now!), but I loved everything else about it. You have a great personality and talent for skill-sharing, Anastasia!
Wow amazing thank you
Welcome 🤗 Thank you for watching
Love it! 😊 thanks
Your very welcome 🤗
i love this!!! I saw other people use a zigzag stitch when taking in the sides… Why? And what is better straight stitch or zig zag?
If your fabric is super stretchy you can use a very narrow zig zag to prevent it from popping but band t shirts usually have no stretch so you can use either. Ideally you want to serge the seam or use the lightening bolt stitch.
@@SewAnastasia thank you so much!!
this seems really helpful! just wondering what stitch pattern should I use if I hand sew it (also to replace the back stitch) ? thank you!
I would probably use a whip stitch ! For back stitch just make a knot. I have a few vids on threading needles & hand sewing . Check them out!
@@SewAnastasia thanks so much for replying!! will certainly do so!
Great job!!🤓🙌🙌🤓
Thank you!! 😁
To watch you go through the process was amazing. However, what do you suggest if my machine is not capable of
sewing zigzags? I'm a novice and using my vintage Singer 201 that sews amazing straight stitches, but I don't have
any attachments for zigzag.
Hummmm you could buy a serger! You can try it with a straight stitch but it’s probably going to pop apart at some point. You could try seeing it by hand with a whip stitch too!
Thank you for making this video. What if you wanted to take in the shoulders too?
You would have to take up the shoulder seam first & then the sides.
Do you have any videos or tips on how to tighten the neck opening? Thanks!
When I tighten my neck openings I use darts
I have two of your patterns and am loving making new garments. Are you using a zig zag for the side seams or a straight stitch?
I have two favorite shirts that are huge, now I can resize them, thank you.
If your fabric is not super stretchy you can use a straight stitch but if its stretchy use a narrow zig zag. Also thank you for using sew anastasia patterns :)
So genius - thank you
Welcome!
Thank you for a great tutorial! I'd like to do this w/a raglan tee....will your method work. XL to a M.
Yeah it will totally work! Iv taken in Xl band shirts to A Small many times.
You make it look so easy! Can you use the same technique you used on that t-shirt on a blouse?
Yes you can!
Appreciate the videos on basic sewing, but it reminds me so much of Blippi!
Thanks for this video
Nisha kumari totally! Happy sewing
Thanks alot gorgeous! 😍
Very welcome 🤗 thank you for watching.
I like your magnectic pin holder. Where did u get it?
Hi! I think I got it at joann fabrics. Thank you for watching.
Thank you so much for this video! I have to try that out asap. 😀 I'm short and the square shape of the men's band shirts don't look that good on me.^^ The only problem is that I have poor experience in sewing...
You got this! Just practice on sone thrifted shirts first
I would take it in the same width all the way down. Thanks for sharing your videos.
Yes I would.
This is fantastic! About six months ago I bought seven nice, tee shirts with print. The good news is I lost weight since then. The bad news is they are now giant on me. This will save me money buying new ones.
Question: can you just take a shirt that fits and lay it flat on the big one so you can trace the size?
1. Congrats on the health achievement! 2.Yes you can lay a shirt that fits on top of the other ones and trace them. Thank you for watching.
What if the shoulders are in the wrong spot? For me, unisex sleeves typically start some where on my upper arm
Your going to have to move the tip of the shoulder. Watch my latest video on tailoring a dress. I move the sleeve in.
Are you using elastic thred when you hemmed the bottom of your tshirt?
Regular thread
I lose a lot weight. This help me so much. Thanks
SweetRanma2008 your welcome 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎀😊💕
Great job
thank you ❤️🎀
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Can I do this but leave the sleeves the same? The sleeves are fine for me
Yes! Just blend your stitch to where you want to stop taking it in
Thanks for the tutorial! I have to buy large shirts because my chest is big, but the waist and lower hip are always too big and frumpy because of it. I'm hopeful that this might help me look normal!
You can do it!
Sorry but what do we do if the collar is too big? My top is a XXXXL but I fit an L but the collar is too big even if I follow this method
Love it’s 💖💖💖
🎀🎀🎀🎀
have you ever made another video with a lighter color shirt? this seems absolutely incredibly helpful, but i have poor vision and the black is hard to see the sleeve alterations on 💛
also...what kind of stitch setting did you use? thank you!!!
Wow that seems so much easier. Than how they show on other videos. Do you have a video. On how to make a t shirt bigger. Say for example you want to add panels. To make it bigger.
Thank you thank you. Please share with your friends. I don’t have a video on how to make a shirt bigger but I think I should make one! Great suggestion! 💕
Anastasia, what if i want to raise the shoulder line as well?
Check out this video I made on that! How to Resize a T-shirt Including Sleeves The Easy Way | Sew Anastasia
czcams.com/video/B00y9TFUH9s/video.html
My only question is how will this hold up, without an overlock stitch? And is there any way to mimic the overlock stitch on a traditional sewing machine?
Knit jersey does not fray so it will hold up good. You can serge with a home sewing machine like this.... Watch this video...czcams.com/video/CUrIKH9U-xQ/video.html
thank you !!!
Very welcome!
I'll have to try this on a massive shirt I just got. How do you knot the end of the thread on a sewing machine?
Back stitch! Thank you for watching 🎀
Do you need to have a special needle attached for stretch fabrics like t-shits? I’ve tried sewing these fabrics with regular needles and it ends up looking puckered (if that makes sense) and tends to curve the fabric in a particular direction. Thanks.
Try using a ball point needle. They are for knit fabrics. Also try using a narrow zig zag stitch or maybe adjust your tension. Hope that helps!
@@SewAnastasia thanks!
I was just wondering, could you go more into detail on how to hand stitch this?
I would use a running stitch or a back stitch ,
Ok prob dumb question but how the heck do i get the shirt off the dress form after pinning? Does it mean you pinned it too tight if you cant get if off without losing pins? Does the direction you put the pins in matter? like ball tip pointing up?
You probably have it pinned too tight for the kind of fabric it is. If you can not get it off the dress form you will not be able to put it on yourself. Happy sewing. Hope you got this worked out.
This so cute. But in my case LOL I just need to keep making these bigger! And bigger! LOL
Lois Casey lol 😂 🎀💕
i dont have a sewing machine does sewing by hand work just fine, if so what kind of stitch do i use?
Use a backstitch for hand stitching this. Check out my video on the backstitch.
What kind of needle did you use to sew the t shirt so it didn’t pucker?
Just a universal needle. Thank you for watching.
Amazing
Thanks. Happy sewing.
Do this work for scrub shirts
What if the shoulders are a size too large? Would you remove the sleeves and reduce the armholes? Would you make a video of this?
I’m pear-shaped so have this problem with most RTW. I remove the sleeves and re-cut them to better fit my arm, leaving the hem intact. I shorten the shoulder seam to fit me. This leaves the armscye too large for the sleeve. I make a “dart” from the armscye to the hem (wide hips) to match the sleeve. You can sew this seam so that it goes in a bit at the waist for a more flattering fit. I hope this makes sense. Good luck.
So, what if you don't wanna get rid of the excess? I want it to resizable back to it's original size so other's can just pull out the stitches where they need to? If that makes sense?
Then I wouldn’t cut off the extra but I would not take in the sleeves. I would blend the stitch into the armhole so you do not get bunching.
Do you have a video of just taking in the sleeves and not the side hem, that's what I'm having the most trouble with
Christian Benett I do not have a video on just sleeves. I’ll add it to my list!
Sew Anastasia thank you!
@@SewAnastasia did you use a straight or single stich?
Most of my t shirts don't have side seams, they are one continuous piece of fabric in the shape of a tube. How would you take something like that in at the sides?
Can anyone help me find a video or an idea to take in a shirt but leave the leaves and the bottom baggy but just cinch at the waist? All the cinch at the waist videos I see are turning it into a crop top. I'm plus size and in order to get something that fits i have to buy up, but then it is just baggy. I always pinch the waist at the sides and like how that looks better but I can't figure out how to easily do this.
I know this is a year old comment but what I usually do is put the shirt on me then pin at my waist further than at the sides so it creates a curve around the waist rather than a straight line like in the video. Hope that helps!
