This is a true story. Bob Dylan helped bring attention to the plight of Ruben,, hurricane,, Carter. Bob Dylan is arguably the greatest singer/songwriter in American history. His lyrics earned him a Nobel Prize in Literature. His career dates from the 1960s to today.
There is no argument about Mr. Zimmerman. He is considered the very best. Songwriter with Joni Mitchell a close second!

Dylan range of music styles is, well, infinite.
Songs are not only about dancing, they can be powerful social commentary that put a light on injustice in the world and educate the listener. This is a true story about a black boxer who was wrongly convicted of murder in 1967. Dylan wrote the song in 1975 but as he was using real people's names who were witnesses, he ended up re-recording it in 1976 for fear of a lawsuit. There was also a retrial of the case in 1976 which failed to clear him but eventually he was released in 1985 after a court found the prosecution was based on racism and hiding facts from jurors. A movie called The Hurricane was released in 1999 with Denzel Washington playing Carter for which he was nominated for Best Actor. I highly recommend anyone watch it who hasn't before.
He wasn't "wrongly convicted".
He was found GUILTY not just once, but in two separate trials.
He was released because so much time had passed (30+ years) that most of the witnesses had died at that point, and the prosecution decided to not pursue the charges again.

From the greatest creator of songs ever. Bob Dylan's delivery and phrasing was insane on this song and also the imagery is so strong it's like a film coming out of your speakers . You need to dive into Dylan's music and especially his lyrics he is the greatest lyricist that this world will ever have, but when you get in to Dylan you go deep, the meaning of his lyrics can drive you completely insane so I'm just warning you, but you will enjoy every minute of it. Bob Dylan is probably the most influential artist from 1963 when he released the song blowing in the wind to murder most foul 2020, he 82 still touring, The tour used to be called The never ending tour, honestly the man is a artistic genius please look into his work not just his music is paintings his sculptures and his writing.

This is one of Dylan's most iconic songs, and he has written HUNDREDS. Dylan also has many different styles of music. I would suggest. "A Hard Rain's A-gonna Fall," "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," "A Simple Twist of Fate, "Highway 61 Revisited," "With God on Our Side," "Forever Young," just to give you a feel of his music. These songs barely scratch the surface of his massive catalog. I enjoy your reactions. Keep it going.❤

Not all Dylan songs are so deep or so spelt-out He's got some light-hearted & goofy ones funny he's a word-ster so always cool twists some are beautiful love songs some protest songs another from very early days of Dylan is "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol" so when i was falling in love with Dylan i was.. no kidding.. 8 - 9 years old..growing up in a bar my folks owned ..Dylan was on the jukebox all the time . Cat Stevens was my # 1 till within 4 years Dylan snuck up stealing the spot & moved in for life. But since Dylan.."moved in" my 'house' was neighbors with Zeppelin Beatles, Hendricks, Stones,Wonder, Bowie and 4 more years later room mates with Tom Waits & John Prine... i know ..great neighborhood huh?. Can't say enough positive about Dylan's music and song writing. He has a list of favorites for me. When Hurricane was released I really enjoyed the music, but caught on quick to the message. It was powerful at the time and not edited in any form except to change a few names. Artist of the times brought feeling and emotions out. Hope you keep enjoying the music and let the lyrics take you in your own thoughts.
Dylan is a legend. Songwriter, yes. Some consider him to be among the great songwriters of the 20th century. A lot of his songs,, like this, are true stories, and in story format. Others are commentaries and some of his songs were very popular, playing on the mainstream charts. I recommend almost anything by him. My favorite to suggest is: Subterranean Homesick Blues (the 'video' version). It's not really a video per se, but it's a film of him doing the song that makes a great predecessor for music videos. It's really cool. Dylan saw a woman with a violin case walking across the street (in Greenwich Village) and asked her to sit in on the recording session. She turned out to be - - wow. Here's the story from WikiP: Bob Dylan is said to have discovered Rivera before the rehearsal for his 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour. While being driven in his limousine around the Village, Dylan spotted Rivera walking with her violin case. Dylan stopped to converse with Rivera and invited her to his rehearsal studio where she spent the afternoon playing along with several of his new songs. "If I had crossed the street seconds earlier," said Rivera in 2012, "it never would have happened." After a session with her, Dylan invited Rivera to play on the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. She played an important role in Dylan's studio album Desire.

I think you got a fairly good rundown on Bob Dylan in some of the other comments below, he was truly a groundbreaking songwriter. One suggestion if I may, listen to, "Subterranean Homesick Blues". You may consider it the first "rap" song? Be sure and watch the black and white video with him flipping poster size cue cards of the lyrics. I think you will like it.

All of Bob Dylan’s songs are revolutionary in nature. He addresses the morality of society in many songs. Also some have lyrics of a psychedelic nature (I guess you could say).
During this time, Dylan was really pushing the envelope, when it came to taboo topics.
Today these topics aren’t so taboo, and we now know all these issues he addresses are facts.
But at the time there were many people who were more than happy to say these issues don’t exist. There is no racism, there is no abuse of power, and rich people aren’t treated any differently than the rest.
Most of us know that’s all bullsht, but there are still some who want to ignore these issues and pretend they don’t exist.
Bob Dylan is a story teller but not all are exactly like this one.

Everything in this song happened in real life, Ruben "the hurricane" Carter was a real boxer who was framed for murder, he spent 20 years in prison, after being convicted by a rigged court system right before he was to compete for the championship because of this he was stripped of his chance to become a champion, protest after protest nothing worked to unrig the justice system, this song was created during one of those protest, people all over the US were fighting for Ruben but after so long nothing worked so people forgot about him for a while until he was finally able to get a new trial by the Supreme Court that wasn't rigged against him based on his skin tone, his innocence was proven and he was set free in the 80s and he was awarded the world heavyweight championship and unfortunately the hurricane passed away in 2014 but he passed away a free man

I learned all about Mr. Carter then. Mr. Dylan is considered the greatest of greats in songwriting! Reactions like this one for Bob Dylan's Hurricane are my favorite. not only listening for the first time to the music but also hearing this story for the first time.
I love how unapologetic Dylan sings about this. It is not like "Hey the legal system made some errors", no it's like "they did this on purpose, not because they wanted to punish the culprit, but to punish a black man." He points out that not only the System is rigged but also the actors in the system are a major problem. The vulgar language he uses for the people that did this to Rubin Carter fits perfectly. You can feel Dylan's rage.

It’s often the case that one doesn’t catch all of the references (in this case to earlier times). ..he ain’t no Gentleman Jim.. refers to a fighter from the late 1800s. In the Raoul Walsh film Gentleman Jim (1941), Jim Corbett was played by Errol Flynn (perhaps best known for playing the lead in Michael Curtiz’s The Adventures of Robin Hood (1838).

This song was credited for getting Ruben Carter released from prison.
It helped spotlight the injustice. But a lot of dedicated people working to get the conviction overturned was more directly responsible for his release.

It's the same way that a white character saying the n-word in a movie, when the movie is specifically about racism, is fine, because we know that that actor is bringing light to a social injustice. The whole point is to talk about it and show what really happened. If you censor these words, it becomes less powerful. In fact, the n-word is very hateful which is why he used it, because he was showing anger for the amount of hate that the black community showed. At the time the media portrayed him in such a negative way that black people at the time also showed an immense amount of hate for him feeling that he was showing black people in poor light.
