  • Welcome to our 4x4 RV overland driving journey up Canada's Dempster Highway into the Arctic Circle and towards Inuvik. Along the gravel road north we see a diesel fuel Ford engine expedition vehicle broken down. It turns out the be the Everlanders whom we quickly met at Overland Expo West this year. They were experiencing issues with their engine not running and found dirty fuel and water in the system. We showed up and brainstormed some ideas and they were back on the road in 20 minutes.

Unfortunately it's not uncommon to get bad fuel in the north, usually the smaller the town or lower volume fuel stations are the worst, so always pack lots of extra filters when in the north or anywhere more remote regardless of what country your in. Fuel like what you showed is most common when a low volume fuel station is getting low on fuel and they're drawing from the bottom of their tank or they were low on fuel and just got filled up and the filling process stirred up all the crap in the bottom of their holding tanks.
Keep up the videos, I'm enjoying them!!

That is why basic equipment should include a Mr Funnel fuel type fuel filter funnel for the unknown stations. The trick is to stop junk/water before it hits your rig. This is such basic information i don't understand why the overland crowd doesn't utilize it more, us farmers/ranchers have been using it for years with all types of questionable fuel.

You guys are awesome! Loving these muddy videos. And a big pat on the back for helping a fellow traveler in need. Unbelievable how bright it is at quarter to eleven!!

You should tie a thin strip of cloth to the mirror support behind each mirror, leaving two equal length ends, it will blow in the wind whilst driving and wipe the face of the mirror keeping it clean, due to the lower air pressure behind the mirror, the ends of the strip need to reach across the mirrors face. An old truck drivers tip.

Great video Ben & Beca, beautiful muddy scenery which sure looks different than on IRT when everythings white. I was in Navy in early 70's where we had lots of contaminated fuel issues, found out Cummins and Cats wouldn't tolerate it but Graymarines (marine version of Detroit Dsls) were more tolerable. Nothing like mopping up contaminated diesel fuel tanks in So East Asian heat while rock and rolling dead in the water, resourcefulness is the key to survival. Safe travels to you 3, enjoying the views and comments.

what a great place to be. Long drives in mud and dirt are awesome. Just to be!...Diesel problems with Jason could have started a lot sooner. Check the filters and change them often for sure. Nasty fuel at best. Have fun...thanks for sharing.

I second the theory that contamination in the storage tank was stirred up by a fuel delivery preceding the fuel purchase. Especially above ground tanks are susceptible to internal condensation issues with climatic temperature modulation. Reputable stations dip their tanks regularly with water detecting gel on the stick and drain or pump off any contamination but even a small amount in the bottom of a tank can be agitated in the delivery process. There are also kits which can be purchased to chemically determine water content in petroleum fuel. Extra filters are important but if regularly traveling in areas of questionable fuel quality the installation of a Racor fuel water separator is a good way to help ensure a clean fuel supply. A bit pricey but much cheaper than a catastrophic fuel system failure.

We did the same road and fuelstation a few years ago, driving on the “top of the world road” our IVeco Carthago our rig started slowing down........in the beginning we also thought aBout dirty fuel.......but north of Anchorage the car wouldN’t start anymore, we were towed to a mechanic. In short, they had to order 6 new injectors from Germany (our home)......the mechanic did a hell of a job installing the new injectors and by hand alligning the whole motor again. It did drive better then ever before.......until we made another trip back home in Europe and during a rainy period the whole thing started all over again. After a firm talk with Iveco they started in dept searching for the cause of the problems......and although the mechanic in Alaska had taken of the fueltank and didn’t find any fault with it, they discovered that we had a little hole in top of our tank and water and mud was getting in the dieseltank ! Costly buusiness during a fantastic trip trough the UsA, Alaska and Canada.

These ferries were invented by a Canadian engineer William Pitt In the early 1900s so he could cross the Kennebacasis River near Saint John N.B. As far as I know, most of the cable ferries are free in N.B. I did not pay for the Westfield Ferry crossing the Saint John River to the Kingston peninsula. The crossings have to be short in length because of the cable.
Of course, ferries that are of any major distances are not free and are run by props. When it comes to ferries to Vancouver Island from Vancouver, often tourist complains about the prices the locals always quote the one-way price ($69 in 1994 when I crossed in a car) noting it not that much. But you have to pay again to get off the island which is effective twice the price.
PEI used to have a ferry from N.B. but it was replaced with a toll bridge but you only pay one way and that is getting off the Island. The ferries also had VLT's on them, something I have never ever seen anywhere else and they were also at my favourite fast food restaurant where you order your food. That practice has not continued.

We didn’t expect to be here, so we didn’t put in for any tags. Have been so busy with business stuff, we haven’t been able to consider just buying a tag and heading out, so probably not going to happen. It has been exceptionally hot, we were thinking that probably would wreak havoc on hunting season. Good luck with your hunt!
