  • Happy New Year, everyone! We've shown you what's inside Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4, and today we examine the hardware inside the new Kinect sensor bar. It's not a device that you're likely going to repair, but iFixit's Kyle Wiens explains how it's an improvement over the technology in the first-gen Kinect.

    im here 5 years later and the only thing preventing me from using this with windows 7 is fact the SDK is coded to only install on windows 10 and theres STILL no open source alternative and the fact you can't run windows 7 and 10 dual boot on a UEFI BIOS

    I'd love to have some info on the PS4 camera. The PS3 camera, on a PC, can go up to ~167Hz. Though, in my experience, only half the frame updates at that speed. Might have been the bus I was using. I think the PS4 camera uses two WVGA or WXVGA cameras, taking alternating frames. I'm tempted to buy the camera, by itself. The PS3 camera can be bought for 8 USD and, for the price, is a decent high-speed camera. Decent mic too.

      Same here wikipedia:"Xbox One consoles ship with an updated version of Kinect; the new Kinect uses a wide-angle time-of-flight camera), and processes 2 gigabits of data per second to read its environment. The new Kinect has greater accuracy with three times the fidelity over its predecessor and even the ability to see in the dark thanks to its new active IR sensor". I don't think iFixit knows much about how things work, it's all about selling tools.

      Untrue still even to this day you can't use your microphone for features like "record that" or "take a screen shot" unless the Kinect is hooked up also. You can use your controller for that but most names pause when you do this so to just get a picture or vIdeo of a paused screen. I have mine pLuged iN But I unplugged the mics flat strip cable. It unlocks features just by having it plugged in eveN though I'm oN a headset.

    www.gamasutra.com/blogs/DanielLau/20131127/205820/The_Science_Behind_Kinects_or_Kinect_10_versus_20.php

    Not sure what could really go bad on a solid state device so long as it's not dropped or built faulty to begin with.

    • @blakkwaltz
      @blakkwaltz Před 10 lety +1

      Flash relies on a floating gate. Basically electrons tunnel through an insulator to store the value for a decent amount of time. This tunneling behavior is what ultimately destroys the flash.
      Flash uses a floating gate transistor that permanently stores a charge in a totally electrically insulated floating gate that isn't connected to anything. Hot carrier injection or tunneling is used to force electrons though the insulator and into the floating gate at very high voltages where they are essentially trapped forever (until reprogrammed again) and electrostatically cause the non floating gate to be on or off depending on the content of the charge trapped in the floating gate. Thus representing one or zero.
      The high voltage and tunneling of electrons through the insulator breaks down the dielectric insulator with each erase/program cycle as electrons tunnel through the material and change the molecular state and electron composition. Basically the high voltage tunneling poisons the insulator with free electrons (?) until the dielectric starts becoming a conductor and progressively leaking so much that the floating gate can no longer hold a isolated charge. It just conducts and drains instantly through the insulator when you try to fill it and can't ever be a "1" again.

    • @weylin6
      @weylin6 Před 10 lety

      Gary Merchant
      Regularly used Flash chips, and capacitors are the only components I can really see having a comparatively short life.
      Capacitors can fail by a somewhat similar means where the dielectric gets pierced and creates a weak spot in the insulation (I don't think this is the same as tunneling, though, and only happens if the capacitor is overcharged, defective, or eventual dielectric creep allows a failure to occur at regular running voltages)
      Parts like these should really be designed to be easily replaced.
