    “I study myself more than any other subject; it is my metaphysic, and my physic.” William Drummond quotes ( Scottish notable poet, 1585 - 1649 )

      @@gracefitzgerald2227 Good advice; I do the same with Will Durant on CZcams. I will check out the audiobook. I've learned a lot about Montaigne in the last week from Durant and CZcams; now I begin reading Freud: The Fusion of Science and Humanism. And "no," I do not see Psychoanalysis as a "science." Climate science history is enough for me, anyway. Thanks for your videos.

      Thank you! I do the best I can at attempting to provide a good summation of any individual philosopher, and try to keep in mind that most of those who seek out my videos may never have read a single word, outside the occasional quote, that the philosopher has written. I am extremely happy to receive your feedback, thanks again!

    What did Montaigne think of the Native Americans in the New World? Did they influence his views at all?

    • @LetsTalkPhilosophy
      @LetsTalkPhilosophy  Před rokem

      I do not believe there were specific instances where he referenced them, though I would believe that he would be open to learning about their culture and not, as many did, see them as simple savages because they were foreign to his own cultural background.

  • @KoenZyxYssel
    @KoenZyxYssel Před 4 lety +2

    Great information here but 7:55 went by really fast, maybe the video was getting too long or something but I was hoping you would at least mention Pascal. I believe Voltaire referred to Pascal's wager as "childish" but I can't imagine that would have bothered Montaigne. There is something interesting there with regards to how we deal with things we don't know. You can connect the dots all the way from Michel de Montaigne to Niels Bohr if you include Pascal.

    • @LetsTalkPhilosophy
      @LetsTalkPhilosophy  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you Koen! I try to do the best I can, inevitably I do miss some things though. Perhaps a great topic for a future video! With my limited time to work on these projects I try to make them a length that I can edit in a reasonable amount of time, each minute is around 1 hour of editing, give or take. Hopefully I can get to Pascal and address it there! Cheers friend, your support as well as your critique is very much appreciated!

    Can i say that he vouched for a somewhat more democratic view and application of philisophy?
    In my view, Academics tend to use a lot of hard words to describe some ideas and this method tends to exclude the majority of population.they try to affirm their "superiority" by writing/speaking in difficult terms. From what i gathered, Montaigne seems to think against this right?
