I’m going to be cruising to Alaska in a Balcony cabin for just $900 US ($1200 CAD)…maybe…
I booked a StandBy Fare on Holland America’s Koningsdam, which doesn’t guarantee you a spot on the cruise, nor does it guarantee which room category you’ll get. The reservation is for an Inside Cabin but, depending on availability, we might get upgraded to an Oceanview or even a Balcony cabin.

Good luck with your standby booking. I had one on the Koningsdam last month, which didn't pan out. The good news was that the refund showed up within a week. I think there's an error in your video though where you suggest that the standby program applies to any itinerary, where the HAL website only shows, currently, Alaska and Canada/New England itineraries.

Hi Gerry! When the program first came out, it was for many more departure ports but I just double checked and the whole program appears to have changed. So, for example, now you can be on the Standby List for a Verandah specifically, instead of just being on an Inside and hoping for the best. Way more expensive too, but still a heck of a deal compared to regular price. Also, you're right - just cruises to Alaska and Maritime cruises. No Mexican Riviera or Caribbean.
I'm really glad to hear that the refund process is quick - at least some happy news if I'm not going to be cruising next week! Thanks for sharing!
