  • We are exploring Ujamaa, a socialism ideology implemented by Tanzania's first President Mwalimu Julius K Nyerere. Ujamaa was unique and was based on the principles of unity, equality, communal villages, self reliance and state ownership.

Socialism and self reliance helped to create unity in Tanzania during that time.
For me as a Tanzanian in positive way socialism helped Tanzania to remove classes in the society and helped poor people to get education. Because the kind of education that was provided by Colonialists left classes It favoured Christians only, Indians, white and Arabs

A good idea in theory implemented poorly becomes a bad idea.

But the Chinese triumphed on the same ideology...may be there were some mistakes on execution

@@milaafrica9340 That is the most foolish statement ever written...but the poverty of the world grows because it's so often repeated.
China did NOT raise themselves from Third World status to global leader by socialism but in spite of socialism.
China became an economic superpower because the West, mostly USA, World Economic Forum stripped America of its manufacturing base.
In 1978, Den Xiao Peng and Chinese Communist Party pivoted towards capitalism and quasi- free market policies.
This economic pivot created more wealth, for more people in a short period 20yrs
250-300 million Chinese were raised up from 'sub saharan Africa levels of poverty to a thrining middle class.
SOCIALISM has never and will never be able to produce such wealth.
SOCIALISM always fails everywhere it is tried because those who advocate socialism in each and every time fail to understand human nature.
Human nature which is flawed and inclined towards sin, unfairness, greed etc.

This such a horrible depiction of Nyerere and Ujamaa, it wan not socialism, it was an African social system where everyone contributed to the common goods! The government was the people and how do you compare Kenya and Tanzania in this sense?

If you speak to people who lived in such a time, they describe how difficult it was to get basic items, and obviously, to date, there is that "ujamaa" spirit among Tanzanians that others see as less ambitious. I think there are both pros and cons to the policy, one being proper integration and less tribalism and of course minimal gap between the rich and poor.
On the flip side, I think the country stagnated a lot because of that...
