you DO NOT wrap your hand around it tightly, if it backfires, your hand will be injured, or will be severed. I always hold the VERY bottom, and somewhat loosely in case of backfire. You can hold any roman candle that is not supposed to explode (most don't).

Roman candles by definition shoot stars, comets or bombettes. Whatchuhavethere is a handheld fountain. Real roman candles should not be held because if the tube ruptures where you grip it, you will suffer severe (most likely permanent) damage to your hand. While at first glance it seems like an unlikely scenario, and indeed I did it many times as a kid, I now know several people who have had this misfortune.
