- Here's a demonstration of painting a large watercolour (21" x 29") at Elgol, Skye looking towards the Cuillin Hills. Painted in changeable weather trying to beat the tide!

Few people know the adventures of a watercolorist. What a great story and beautiful painting. Your wife did an amazing job documenting the journey. She has a steady arm, the whole video was enjoyable to watch for me, and I say it as someone who gets dizzy easily with movement.❤
Hi Paulina
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Tanya’s really getting good at it now.
Lots more videos to come.
Thanks James
Thank you for sharing your Plein air experience with me. Great videographer! Wonderful painting!
That painting really summed up what it’s like painting in Scotland. The weather is always such a big factor.
Glad you enjoyed it
James
I have recently started doing plein air watercolor myself, and found it surprisingly enjoyable. I paint very small though. It amazes me how you do such large paintings outdoors, and it turned out beautiful, thanks for sharing your talent!
Hi JJ,
That’s really great that you’ve started to paint outdoors. I think it’s the best way to paint as everything is right. When you paint from photographs, your painting is an interpretation of how a Camera sees the subject.
It’s better to use your own eyes.
Keep going!
Best wishes, James
Oh, the trials of painting in Scotland!
I love this loose style and it's really inspiring me to get out and paint. Thank you, James.
Hi Claire. The weather is so changeable in Scotland, especially on the west coast; it can be 4 seasons in one day! Hopefully you’ll get out and paint soon.
Best wishes, James
James, it is inspiring to watch you painting and a joy to see the Cuillin Hills again! Really impressed by your professionalism in front of the camera and Tanya’s skill in her filming. Xxx
Thanks Deb. It was a great trip. Glad you enjoyed the video. Tanya’s great at videoing now! Xxx
JUST LOVELY THANKS
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your message 😊
James
Really loved your bold stroke style in this painting. The beautiful colours really gave a sense of weather and atmosphere. Many thanks.
Hi Joan
Glad you like the way I tackle my paintings. There really was a lot of weather and atmosphere that day!
Thanks, James
You created a beautiful painting. Thank you. I hope to visit that area one day.❤
Hi Cathy,
Glad you like the painting. It’s a beautiful place. The best time to visit is in May then you can avoid the midges in the summer, which attack you!
Best wishes James
Very enjoyable watching you create this lovely painting. I’m a seventy year old beginner, and it was very interesting seeing how you gradually transformed the initial ‘wash’ of sky, sea, rocks and foreshore into a painting with so much more detail. That’s the technique I need to learn, as I get disheartened when I see the initial mess I have created!
Hi Mick,
Glad you enjoyed the video.
One of the interesting parts of Watercolour is that the beginning is always so bad you have to realise that it will get better, but sometimes that’s a little bit depressing.
Keep on going and work through those moments, and it will get better.
Best wishes, James
Gorgeous painting. I love the misty, distant mountain peaks and the colours in the foreground rocks. Amazing work. Thank you. 😊
Hi Borley,
Glad you liked the painting. I too particularly liked The way the distant mountains were covered by mist. Very Scottish 🏴
Thanks James
Very loose. Love it
Hi Merletth,

It was a very memorable day.

Watched all your Scottish water colour paintings today and have appreciated the commentary as you paint. Like the loose painting style you have. 👌👌
Thanks for binge watching all my videos! Lots more to come, hope you keep enjoying them 😊
just lovely and shows your great use of various colors so well and beautifully. Great camera work and painting dealing with the exciting weather
Hi Suzanne. I’ll be starting up my watercolours in the end of January on a trip to warmer climates. I’ll pass on your complements to Tanya about the camera work 😊
Thanks James
Gorgeous painting! I was on the island of Skye 20 years ago. You brought me back! Thank you for sharing your knowledge of watercolor!
Glad you liked the painting.
Hopefully you’ll return back to Skye.
Thanks James
Enjoyed the sequence and the translucent effect of your watercolours. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Skye the narrative and the film work - spectacular - thank you something to aspire to.
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
I hope you can be inspired to get out and paint!
James
Hi Dan. Sorry for the late reply, I don’t know how I missed your comment. We are doing a bit more voice over now. The weather is always a challenge!
Tanya’s got a new camera now so she’s working hard to relearn the videography.
Thanks James
Beautiful places and paintings loving jame,s relaxed expertise also admiring the film editing
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for replying.
Very nice! I’m about to leave for Europe and will also be in London, Oxford, and all over Scotland, on this trip. You’ve inspired me to visit this area and to bring along art supplies. Thx!
Hi Stephanie, sounds like you’ve got a great trip planned 😊
Scotland is a beautiful place to paint, especially with the Autumn colours, though make sure you pack your waterproofs if you’re coming this time of year 😅
Thanks James
Painting good tidings James
Hi Anthony, thanks for good tidings! :)
Well done 👍👍♥️
Thanks very much 😊
James
Love it, yet again very entertaining! I have painted in torrential rain with a thunderstorm overhead, all adds to the ambience in the UK, we're hardcore 😂.
Thanks Kim. As winter is approaching it’s going to get even more hard core in Scotland! It’s going to be fun 😊
Very entertaining James. It was like an old Batman episode where the water level continues to rise.and you don't know if they will make it out in time! Great painting inn very challenging circumstances.
Glad you enjoyed it Stella.
I loved the old Batman. I’m sure the tide is going to get the better of me for one day!
Thanks James
Nice lead in

@@JamesPotterAboutArt My pleasure, James.
I like the colours, they remind me of the Scottish Colourists such as John Peploe.
Thanks for your comment. Peploe was amazing. I will be heading over to Iona at some point, so I really will be following in the Scottish colourists footsteps.
what a breath of fresh air you are james potter and thanks to you and your wife for soldiering on
glad to have found you, love your style, and greetings from australia
Thanks for your kind words, from down under.
Glad you enjoyed the video, lots more to come.
Best wishes James
I was wondering if maybe you did your voice over at home you might've saved a little time. Just the same, lovely painting...and I rather liked the texture from the drizzle. Subbed.
Hi Dan. Glad you liked the painting. Sorry I must missed your comment 😮
I do do some VoiceOver but I feel that talking on the spot comes out more naturally. When I do the voice over at home, it seems to take me about 73 times to get it right!😂
Many thanks for your sub.!
Best wishes, James

Any sight of the Loch Ness Monster in those waters?
I think I may have spotted Nessie’s cousin but didn’t quite get to my camera in time 😅
Thanks for watching, James
Any chance of a lake or river painting to challenge our skills?
Yes, I certainly will. There’s lots to choose from in Scotland. Thanks, James
