Wonderful. I've heard this beautiful piece more than thirteen years, Jordi Savall's interpretation, and I've always enjoy like the first time.

Of course different people hear music differently, I do not hear sadness here or with any of his other works performed by others. I do find it calming and serene.

Did Sainte-Colombe ever write anything that wasn't melancholic?

***** One doesn't have to fall into mysticism to become a dreamer, full of sadness and melancholic. Life changing events bring that to you.

In a certain way, it is explained in the cult French movie "All the Mornings of the World" ("Tous les matins du monde") en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tous_les_Matins_du_Monde It's fiction, since nothing is known of St.Colombe's life, not even his first name, only the fact he had a son, who was also a composer. However, there's an underlying message and philosophy so deep and touching, that one can understand why this music is so sad.
