Started buying Opinel knives because they were such good value a lot of snobbery about them unfortunately, I have a fair collection of Opinel the standard type as well as more exotic handle material and a few different designs, the garden knife is great. I also have the Old Bear and and a Mam but only one of each they don't appeal to me as much the Opinel, I have looked at these Jose da Cruz but resisted buying very tempted mind, the use of exotic woods lift them out of the peasant bracket for sure, look forward to next video. 😁
The Jose da Cruz may need a little oil just to make them look even nicer. I think Opinel offers outstanding value for money. I think that's what drawn me to them. The steel you get for the money. The history behind them. What's not to like. I'm glad you enjoy them also 😊. Team Opinel ✊️
The foot of the Opinel is there so you can tap the toe of it on something to open the blade up a bit. It might work with the others. I put mine on the radiator if they start getting stiff.
Brilliant video! Love the look of these, I’ve got a few Opinel’s and a Svord peasant. Really going to have to pick a few more of this style up! One thing I like about the Opinel’s is how light weight they are, guessing these are the same. Thanks for the look at these brother 😎👍🏻
Very light, Sean. But I'll be honest with you, Sean. I'm at that stage in life where I have to young children. So if it's lighter than a small bike or child, I don't notice it 😂. I feel like a mule some days 😂
They are handsome knives. I bought the Grafting knife the first time they were available and I'm very happy with it, it's very sharp. It seems to be the only model in the range that doesn't have the metal insert in the lanyard hole and I would rather not have the insert. It also has the silly small nail nick which I can pull the blade open with but don't need to because there's so much blade to grab with that model. I'd love an A. Wright or M.May Lambsfoot in the Tiger wood. That'd be nice.😮
That tiger wood looks so great. Those are cool knives. Thanks for showing them. I still haven’t even picked up an Opinel yet but I do have one on my Amazon wish list. I will get one soon hopefully.
You can't go wrong with an Opinel. I'm a bit of a fan boy 😂. Unsure the prices in the States, but like £10ish here. Such a good slicer. Hope you are well, Dean 🫡
I've been thinking of snagging one of these! They just got 'em in at Warriors and Wonders; one of my favourite Canadian cutlery shops! The handles on Jose De Cruz knives are far more exotic than the run of the mill Opinel or Old Bear. Sure, Opinel does limited editions that are drool-worthy, but the majority of their typical knives are very simple and utilize woods of a common Genus. While I still love them, (and have *way* too many of them) I sometimes wish the limited editions weren't well...limited! If you like Opinel-esque knives, you should really consider Nontron. They're like Opinels...only fancier! I enjoyed the video, my friend. Cheers, as always!
I've been meaning to extend my French collection, and the Nontron is definitely on the list. I nearly pulled the trigger on a No5 not so long ago. The list is long my friend and I keep getting sidetracked. I just bought another vintage Taylors eye witness today. My worry is it will sell...so I snap them up🤣😂 Shoot me an email if you get a chance? It would be good to have a way of getting in to contact with you.
Mate I just had my volume on whilst replying to comments. Just realised I say Jose instead of Hose....I need to watch them before I post 😂. I hate the sound of my voice, brother 😑. Hope you're good mate? Loving your long form videos, mate 👊
@SteelCityKnives yup I caught how you said it but I assumed that's how you pronounced it in the U.K. lol thanks for watching my videos. I dig your voice, most people don't like their own voices, like myself. 😄
Man those are some smart looking knives. That tiger wood is brilliant. I might put a bit of clear coat on it, but it would be just fine with a bit of oil. I have to see if I can find some over here in the states. Good stuff as always, mate👊🏻
What brand of clear coat do you use Tim. I like the stuff you use. Might have it over here? The tigerwood is class....so different and lives up to its name. Cheers brother 🫡
@@SteelCityKnives I use Rust-Oleum American Accents Gloss Clear One coat will protect. Two for a low gloss finish. Three or more for a glossy finish. I like to do a very light sanding between costs with a high grit sandpaper (800ish) to even out the finish and help the next coat adhere better. I didn’t do that on my Joker knife dye job video because I rushed it for the video and you can tell. I had to go back and do some touch ups.😆
Damn you for placing this temptation in front of me@@SteelCityKnives. Have just received a tiger wood and oak versions in small. Really beautiful handles and blades. Have given them a coat of linseed oil and waiting to dry. Not sure that I need any more to be honest.
Hey Steely 👊 I still have mine to review... a little bit of a backlog due to unforseen circumstances 😉 Doing the RB-5 tonight or tomorrow, hopefully... These Cruz puppies are such a great alternative to Opinel's or instead can compliment them - love the wood 🪵 coverings and brass ferrel/ locking nut 👌 Thanks for sharing brother, Atb Gus 👍
I'm really impressed with them. Took a while for them to come back into stock here. How are you finding the RB-5? I'm looking forward to the review! I think I would have one in my collection. Just the list is so long 🤣 Hope you are well, brother? 🙏
Simple lined knives are my Fav...I dont know the steel either i seen these some where else but i know in the Area they use alot of Krupp or Mova. that 1.4116 stuff or whatever.
Great knives pal they sold out really well when they first came out but no one ever really showed them ,not sure if they went down that well ,god knows why as i love em the stag cleaver style one looks amazing 👊 if you use danish oil on them pal you get a slight sheen ,if thats what you want 🤣🤔👍
@@SteelCityKnives unfortunately pal no oil will give you a shine it will only bring out the grain ,to get a shine that it achieved by fine sanding and buffing when using oil , a good quality danish oil is good ,also there is osmo wax oil that is water repellent that is great stuff, but still you'll need to buff it ,I got some buffing wheels that fit in a drill that come with buffing compound of Amazon for about £10 work great for cleaning up old knives , one last thing A Harrison at A wrights use thinned linseed oil and buff highly on there wooden knives 😁👊
I saw one retailer state it was 420. An American retailer. I also saw that 2 European retailers stated it was 1.4116. So, no certainty, that's why I didn't want to state what it was. Personally, I believe it is more likely to be 1.4416 rather than 420. As a lot of European knife makers use it. Do you know what the carbon steel is? Again, not 100%, but I have found a few retailers say it was AISI 1060. Thanks for the comment. New knives but they are mine 😉
@hotmessgear9069 Sorry brother, my name is Martin. I read that completely wrong 😂. I'm on nights atm and clearly not thinking right 🙃. I thought you were having a go as I didn't know the steel and need to show 'my' knives. 😅🤣 I apologise, my friend!

The steel/brass/ironwood colour combo is 👌🏻🔥🔥🔥
That's one I first saw, and I'm with you it's 🔥! 👊
Those style knives are great! I have a few of them!
I bet you do 😂. I'll catch up up one day, Mike may take me a few decades 🤣
Great review. All i could find was Portuguese stainless steel. Thanks for bringing us the video. 😊

Yeah, I could do without the lanyard hole as it's pretty small anyway.
Cheers Ed 🍻
I also like the L´alpage from André Verdier. Made in Thiers France. Same system and an interesting blade shape.
I keep meaning to get one Rhino. A lot of them have designs on the wood? Again very affordable. Cheers brother 👊
Even with the tiny nail nicks, those are really good looking knives! Thanks for the look at them, my friend!

I think they look like a step up from Opinel knives because of the wood and locking ring. 👍

Lovely knives I could see carrying them as a pocket steak knife
God bless
I didn't think of that, Terry. They would make an excellent steak knife! 😋 🥩
