1972 Los Angeles Lakers Season

  • No one could have foreseen the team's domination the next season, however. Bill Sharman had been installed as the new head coach, and on the afternoon of November 9, 1971, just nine games into the season, the legendary Elgin Baylor retired, finally accepting that his injuries would no longer allow him to play professional basketball. That very evening, the Lakers proceeded to win the first of what would turn out to be a 33-game winning streak, before losing to the Bucks on January 9, 1972. The streak shattered the previous NBA record of 20, which happened to have been set by the Bucks the year before. To this day, the Lakers' 33-game winning streak remains the longest winning streak in the history of any major American professional sport.
    The Lakers amassed 69 regular season wins that year, which was also an NBA record, one which stood for nearly a quarter of a century (Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls won 72 in 1995--96). The team led the league in scoring, rebounds, and assists, and Sharman was named Coach of the Year. Not only that, but the Lakers at long last shook the monkey off their back, conquering the Knicks in the 1972 NBA Finals to claim their first NBA title since 1954 and first since their move to Los Angeles.

    I used to listen to Laker games on the radio, Chick Hearn was the best. The '72 Lakers were a awesome team to watch, sure miss the good old days when the NBA wasn't poisoned by greed and when they played as a team.

    Shaq doesn't know Happy Hairston? I still don't feel like Shaq was ever a Laker. He was always in it for himself.

    Yes, Baylor got a ring AND a full play-off share. The newer Lakers who didn't know Elgin very well, protested this....
    I went to the 1972 NBA All-Star game at The Forum. Jerry West won the MVP award. I also went to a pre-season game in which Wilt dunked over Jabbar with 1 second left to give the Lakers a 1 point victory. I was sitting 20 feet behind the Lakers' basket....Wilt blocked 17 Skyhooks in the 6 game playoff series against the bucks....

    First of all, Kobe will NEVER get traded because he is "A Laker For Life". Bynum, if he does not clean up his attitude, may find himself in Sucramento or Charlotte. Gasol is not going anywhere! Not at the moment. So for right now, Mitch Kupchak has to roll his sleeves up tight and try to get to work in trying to build around Kobe and Gasol, starting with a Young, Athletic Bench. WE NEED TO DRAFT A BIG MAN TO LIGHT A FIRE UNDER BYNUM! D12 will be going to the Nets if he is not happy!

      Pat Riley also played with the Knicks, was an 8th man at best, third substitute off the bench, does the dirty work, great hustle guy, great pedigree, played for Adolph Rupp in college at Kentucky, lost to Texas Western (UTEP) in NCAA title game. First all Black starting five in an NCAA college title game.

    You are right though. They have one of the baddest bench in the NBA right now. But I don't think they will win a championship again. You know. Odom got traded to the Mavericks, Fisher got traded to the Thunder and Pau Gasol will also get traded and after 4 years Bynum and Kobe will also get traded. So the team will get worse by then

    @thenintendogamer I think that's a little extreme! Elgin Baylor is in the NBA Hall of Fame even without a 'ring'. A ring does not define individual greatness. I mean, 'Downtown' Freddie Brown has a ring, but is he on the same level as Baylor? Hell no! So, to say Elgin Baylor is cursed? I would beg to differ.

    • @jonny15dk
      @jonny15dk Před 3 lety

      Baylor, Wilt and West were past there primes.
      Baylor was 36 and had smashed the boards alot and the game was more physical back then.
      His last 4 seasons he was not great anymore. He was a very good and then dropped and dropped as the injuries kept coming.
      The game beat up West with 12 broken bones and his last years he was not prime either. He was a good but not great version of his self.
      If West played without breaking bones so much he would have averaged 30 PGG instead of 27.
      Baylor would have averaged more too and so would have Wilt.
      Wilt role was defensive stopper and top rebounder and 2nd or 3rd leader in APG on the Lakers when Bill Sherman took over.
      Without Wilt no Championship. With Sherman no Championship.

    • @jonny15dk
      @jonny15dk Před 3 lety +1

      Also Gail Goodrich was the lead scorer. So without him too.
      So its multiple reasons and Bill Sherman was the creator of the system of Offense they ran.
      They were #1 in PPG with past prime stars, scorer Goodrich and good and very good shooters and great passing.

    @KB24isClutcherThanMJ Different rules, different era, different training and fitness, etc. The 96 Bulls were great no doubt, but if all the players ( including MJ ) played in 1972, they wouldn't be the same type of player they were in 96, both pysically or mentally. They would have been raised in the 50 and 60's, which had a completely different outlook on training and such, society also was different. The 72 Lakers were the best in their era, as was the 90ish Bulls.

  • @Jiltedin2007
    @Jiltedin2007 Před 12 lety

    Kobe had an opportunity to screw over the Lakers after he forced Shaq and Phil Jackson out of Los Angeles back in 2004. He had a choice whether to play for the Lakers or Clippers, and he chose the Lakers.
    Back then, I admit that would have love to have Kobe traded to the Bulls for Luall Deng and Kirk Hinrich.

  • @Jiltedin2007
    @Jiltedin2007 Před 12 lety

    Obviously so! When you consider Aging Stars like Kobe and Gasol who are leading the way for the team. I would have included Fisher but he got traded for Ramon Sessions. Coupled with the fact that they got the Shittiest Bench in the NBA, with the exception of Steve Blake and Jordan Hill, even a 5 year old Child could see the difference in the Lakers. But don't worry, I'm quite sure that Kupchak will have the Lakers reloaded once again. It's just going to take some time.
