- No one could have foreseen the team's domination the next season, however. Bill Sharman had been installed as the new head coach, and on the afternoon of November 9, 1971, just nine games into the season, the legendary Elgin Baylor retired, finally accepting that his injuries would no longer allow him to play professional basketball. That very evening, the Lakers proceeded to win the first of what would turn out to be a 33-game winning streak, before losing to the Bucks on January 9, 1972. The streak shattered the previous NBA record of 20, which happened to have been set by the Bucks the year before. To this day, the Lakers' 33-game winning streak remains the longest winning streak in the history of any major American professional sport.
The Lakers amassed 69 regular season wins that year, which was also an NBA record, one which stood for nearly a quarter of a century (Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls won 72 in 1995--96). The team led the league in scoring, rebounds, and assists, and Sharman was named Coach of the Year. Not only that, but the Lakers at long last shook the monkey off their back, conquering the Knicks in the 1972 NBA Finals to claim their first NBA title since 1954 and first since their move to Los Angeles. - Sport
I used to listen to Laker games on the radio, Chick Hearn was the best. The '72 Lakers were a awesome team to watch, sure miss the good old days when the NBA wasn't poisoned by greed and when they played as a team.
damn riley has roots in both teams in this 2020 finals
I was born in 84 but i would have loved to see this team in the 70s! This is great footage!
@2:38 Wilt threw the b-ball like a football from one end to the other.
Everyone talks about the great starters as they certainly were but they had a bench with jim cleamens, leroy ellis, pat riley, keith erickson, john trapp and flynn robinson.Thats a badass team!
one of the best nba team ever
Its amazing to see what NBA 2k12 has done for kids learning the hsitory of the game.....
Nice to see again. Thank you!
Shaq doesn't know Happy Hairston? I still don't feel like Shaq was ever a Laker. He was always in it for himself.
Having Jerry West go point guard on this team was Brilliant... Bringing Sharman to the Lakers was Crazy Brilliant!
Bredikoff cost the Lakers a championship because he just wasn't a pro contender team coach. He was out of his league.
The Greatest Team in the History of the NBA!
went to several games that season.... saw them beat golden state 162 to 99. at the time largest margin of victory. They were great
@2:38 look at Wilt snatch down rebound and start fast break, led the league in assists: the only center in history to do that.
Wilt is the Ultimate GOAT
@1:50 look at Wilt and that finger roll.
Unstoppable fingers roll especially before knee surgery 1969 & before
Wilt was unstoppable wheeling & tornado 🌪 moves towards the basket 🧺 to score more points
Yes
But that's a Good Thing! Maybe you're not as old as I am, but back in my days, The Players normally stuck to whatever team they plaed in for as long as they could until they got traded.
The 1996 Chicago Bulls. Right? When the Bulls won their 72 Games that season, what was their longest winning streak?
The Lakers even today, still hold the record for The Longest Winning Streak in Professional Sports from that 33 Game Winning Streak they have set back in this Magical 1972 Season.
Yes, Baylor got a ring AND a full play-off share. The newer Lakers who didn't know Elgin very well, protested this....
I went to the 1972 NBA All-Star game at The Forum. Jerry West won the MVP award. I also went to a pre-season game in which Wilt dunked over Jabbar with 1 second left to give the Lakers a 1 point victory. I was sitting 20 feet behind the Lakers' basket....Wilt blocked 17 Skyhooks in the 6 game playoff series against the bucks....
He played 2 games then retired the season they won the championship.
@Yardbird68. The transition game with small guards dictating was non-existent till Larry Brown came the next year and that was from the ABA. When he came to the NBA, prognosticators said no way it work but it did.
@iluvbrew0069 yes that was. a great team w/ quality players. the lakers finished w/ a 69-13 record that year & then won the championship. i miss the 1970's.****
Good for him.
Great point! I would argue that a guy like Ken Hubbs, or Danny Thomas, or Rudy Tomjanovich was cursed.
They Won 33 Straight Games That Year
Unbeatable l.a Lakers 1971/ 1972 nba basketball;; champions 🏆
First of all, Kobe will NEVER get traded because he is "A Laker For Life". Bynum, if he does not clean up his attitude, may find himself in Sucramento or Charlotte. Gasol is not going anywhere! Not at the moment. So for right now, Mitch Kupchak has to roll his sleeves up tight and try to get to work in trying to build around Kobe and Gasol, starting with a Young, Athletic Bench. WE NEED TO DRAFT A BIG MAN TO LIGHT A FIRE UNDER BYNUM! D12 will be going to the Nets if he is not happy!
3:58 look at pat riley grinding.. my man
Pat Riley also played with the Knicks, was an 8th man at best, third substitute off the bench, does the dirty work, great hustle guy, great pedigree, played for Adolph Rupp in college at Kentucky, lost to Texas Western (UTEP) in NCAA title game. First all Black starting five in an NCAA college title game.
You are right though. They have one of the baddest bench in the NBA right now. But I don't think they will win a championship again. You know. Odom got traded to the Mavericks, Fisher got traded to the Thunder and Pau Gasol will also get traded and after 4 years Bynum and Kobe will also get traded. So the team will get worse by then
@iluvbrew0069
Exactly. People jock the 1995-96 Bulls, but that Bulls team never challenged 33 consecutive wins.
@iluvbrew0069 No doubt, The Best Ever! And the Lakers 33 Game Winning Streak is STILL the Longest Winning Streak in the History of Professional Sports!
@Jiltedin2007 Unfortunately, Elgin Baylor will forever be cursed to the list of greatest players never to have won a championship.
Almost Heat, You were six away from beating the lakers streak
@thenintendogamer I think that's a little extreme! Elgin Baylor is in the NBA Hall of Fame even without a 'ring'. A ring does not define individual greatness. I mean, 'Downtown' Freddie Brown has a ring, but is he on the same level as Baylor? Hell no! So, to say Elgin Baylor is cursed? I would beg to differ.
Still I can't believe their 1970-71 season. It took them 7 games to win the bulls!! and they lost in 5 games to the bucks and all this happened while having west Goodrich baylor and Chamberlain ( west top5 pg ever baylor the most underrated player ever and chamberlain doesn't need to be introduced probably the goat center) I am pissed
Baylor, Wilt and West were past there primes.
Baylor was 36 and had smashed the boards alot and the game was more physical back then.
His last 4 seasons he was not great anymore. He was a very good and then dropped and dropped as the injuries kept coming.
The game beat up West with 12 broken bones and his last years he was not prime either. He was a good but not great version of his self.
If West played without breaking bones so much he would have averaged 30 PGG instead of 27.
Baylor would have averaged more too and so would have Wilt.
Wilt role was defensive stopper and top rebounder and 2nd or 3rd leader in APG on the Lakers when Bill Sherman took over.
Without Wilt no Championship. With Sherman no Championship.
Also Gail Goodrich was the lead scorer. So without him too.
So its multiple reasons and Bill Sherman was the creator of the system of Offense they ran.
They were #1 in PPG with past prime stars, scorer Goodrich and good and very good shooters and great passing.
Did Elgin Baylor also recieve a Ring from that 1972 Championships Team?
Out of Sympathy, and Heart, they should have given him one for all Elgin Baylor has meant for a team he actually "Wore his Heart on His Sleeve" for.
He, Elgin Baylor put b-ball on the map in LA , Los Angeles was all Dodgers, untill Baylor's exceptional play year in and year out kept the Lakers relevant and in contention for a chip.
@aarondigby9859 Elgin Baylor & Jerry west original dynamic duo in sports
I don't hate him. I am just tired of seeing him being on the same team over and over again.
@6:15 look at YTE boy clear the boards.
@KB24isClutcherThanMJ Different rules, different era, different training and fitness, etc. The 96 Bulls were great no doubt, but if all the players ( including MJ ) played in 1972, they wouldn't be the same type of player they were in 96, both pysically or mentally. They would have been raised in the 50 and 60's, which had a completely different outlook on training and such, society also was different. The 72 Lakers were the best in their era, as was the 90ish Bulls.
Great points
Kobe had an opportunity to screw over the Lakers after he forced Shaq and Phil Jackson out of Los Angeles back in 2004. He had a choice whether to play for the Lakers or Clippers, and he chose the Lakers.
Back then, I admit that would have love to have Kobe traded to the Bulls for Luall Deng and Kirk Hinrich.
But they don't right now. They are a different team.
Actually the Chicago Bulls
Obviously so! When you consider Aging Stars like Kobe and Gasol who are leading the way for the team. I would have included Fisher but he got traded for Ramon Sessions. Coupled with the fact that they got the Shittiest Bench in the NBA, with the exception of Steve Blake and Jordan Hill, even a 5 year old Child could see the difference in the Lakers. But don't worry, I'm quite sure that Kupchak will have the Lakers reloaded once again. It's just going to take some time.
How come Kobe is a Laker for life and Lebron isn't a HEAT for life?
And why do you hate Kobe?
So why doesn't Kobe change teams
The Lakers are a different team? Yes, far from the team of Championship Runs.
Sorry for my rants. Just a bit peeved at the state of the National Boring ASSociation. The ratio of my race to the others is a bit galling. I thought it needed some attention.
lmfao sike
33 Likes.... No Dislikes ahahaha
I am tired of seeing him being on the Lakers team
They Aint son lmfao
Àa
Miami is gonna break this record lol take that lakertards
anthony cheesman lol looking back at this now
Because unlike Kobe, LeBron is a Sellout! LeBron sold out Cleveland(And Mike Brown) before "Taking his talents with him to South Beach".
If the Celtics were still around, they would have whooped this team.
+at1212 b no way this team have 33 wins in a row
@master-kq3nw Gail Goodrich & Jerry west : wilt was on 1971/ 1972 l.a Lakers team : wilt would've score 30 points on 35 years ago bill Russell:: wilt wheels chair bill Russell into nursing home 🏡 1972 nba champion
How about giving John Block a little credit there broadcast guy. He put up some pretty nice stats in that game. Oh that's right- he's white. Don't want to help ol' pasty gangstas nowadays, or even back in...1972!
Michele Obama @ 3:26
@iluvbrew0069 96 bulls are better
