NE Revolution 🆚 Club América
Club America began its 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Quarterfinal series with a 4-0 road victory in the first leg against New England Revolution on Tuesday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Henry Martin opened the scoring in the 16' on a turn inside the box. The play initiated from a recovered ball by left back Cristian Calderon, played through Alvaro Fidalgo before Javairo Dilrosun provided the final pass to Martin.
Alejandro Zendejas scored the second goal for the Mexico City side in the 25' with a cut back inside the box and a curled shot towards goal. Martin provided the assist with a knifing pass through the defense.
Carles Gil attempted to cross the ball from the right edge of the box in the 43' but was just short of connecting with Tomas Chancalay as the Club America defense was stingy with giving up attempts.
Gil tried to find Ryan Spaulding on a long cross in the 45' +1, nearly forcing an own goal from Israel Reyes, but Malagon was alert to deflect the danger.
Richard Sanchez intercepted the ball to create his own attempt in the 47' but sent it just over the bar.
Cristian Calderon pounced on a rebound in the 64' to extend the lead by three. An America corner kick was the catalyst for the play as Earl Edwards Jr. was unable to contain a long-range attempt from Sanchez.
Luis Malagon was alert with a save in the 86' to deny a long-range hit from Tomas Chancalay.
The Club America goalkeeper came up big with another save in the 88' on a header from Bobby Wood.
Brian Rodriguez extended the lead for the Mexican giants in the 90'+1 on a drive towards goal. The Uruguayan forward initiated the buildup by playing fellow second half substitute Diego Valdes.
Club America will host New England Revolution next Tuesday for the second leg at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
