I live here, born and raised on Arthur Bryant's. For 64 years it's been my go to. It is the OG of BBQ in Kansas City.

You can’t go wrong eating at Bryant’s or Gates. These will produce the best old fashioned bbq in Kansas City.
Bryant's has been my fave since I was a kid. Good choice! You should try Gates and L.C.'s to try others of the old school joints. In KC there were always Gate's folks and Bryant's folks. Joe's is now called Kansas City Joe's and should split the difference between old and new school and really good, but take the time to go to the gas station location. The brisket z-man sandwich is a bit gimmicky to me (has an onion ring and melted cheese), but it's pretty darn good. Char Bar is another new school joint so fair warning. The real OGs are: Bryants, Gates, L.C.'s (blue parkway location), Zarda, Rosedale, Haywards Pit, BB's Lawnside, Jones, & Woodyard. Joes and Jack Stack are the slightly newer old school spots. then the real new are Q39 and Char Bar.

You were lead a stray by young hipsters(Q39) and old traditionalist(Bryant's). You should have went to Oklahoma Joe's/Joe's KC and LC's.
Definitely lead astray with Q39. In my advanced research I was real suspicious of Q39 based on the atmosphere alone, but gave it a shot anyways. I was looking for the old traditionalist ways for KC BBQ, which is why I chose Bryant's. I'm glad I did because the ribs were full of flavor. I have some friends here in Texas from KC and both of them recommended Oklahoma Joes. Kind of wish I had taken their advice. But we we'll definitely be back and this will be the top of the list. @@bucketsworld1642 Don't believe the "hype" surrounding Joe's KC either. Joe's is serviceable but nothing special IMO. I'll take Q39 before Joe's, but give me Bryant's any day of the week.
If you haven't been at Gates Joe's and LC you dont have KC bbq.
Gates you get the mixed plate all beef best ribs in KC awesome brisket and the best sauce in the world.
Joe's you get the ribs out of this world.
LC pretty much everything it's amazing.
Arthur's I love the brisket sandwich and their sauce (original) it's money.
I've heard great things about Gates and will definitely be on my list next summer. Thanks for watching!

I'm a KC original. I've been to Q39 once, and only once. If I bump into anyone that's new to KC or just visiting, I ALWAYS suggest Arthur Bryant's. It's far and away the best in town for my money. It's easy to get good BBQ in this town, and it's a popular good-natured debate amongst locals...but seldom do you hear anyone name Q39 as a hill they're willing to die on. It's just too pretentious, and overrated. I can rattle off a dozen better places before I even think of that joint. Also...when you go back to AB's, you gotta have the original sauce. It's the only way to go!

Absolutely no smoke or bark on that brisket, and you are correct, Bryant's slice their brisket, and by doing so you lose that juicy flavor, you would get from just cutting it, and it's sliced very thin, .Their ribs are smoked nicely, as you found out, and the fall off the bone ribs is for the fake BBQ places who boil the meat beforehand. if you want the best Brisket, thick, sliced and bark, Harp's BBQ.
Rosedale is so much better.
Q39 is competition quality barbecue.
The sauce is weird. Gritty and skunky. I don’t hate them, but they’re all just a bit .. different. The meat seems good and the portions are generous. The sauces are just a bit off. I love L.C’s. but it’s far from a fine dining experience.

Arthur Bryant's bbq is terrible since the old man died.
Bryant's is the worst barbeque I've had in KC.
AB's is absolutely awful
