Pre-Scratch Damara is misunderstood by the fandom. She is the way she is because she was mistreated by Rufioh and Meenah, and after her act of revenge, everyone else. They saw her heartbreak and meek demeanor as weak and useless. She attacked everyone because she was trying to protect herself, to finally make a stand. She made them pay for what they did to her. Any act of vengeance was taken as cruelty. I think her promiscuity originated from a desire for love again, for forgiveness for what she did. She became desperate, and lost control. She is so kind to the humans because they don't know about her past, because they are her only chance of ever having another friend. Post-Scratch Damara never had a friend at all. Everyone she ever met was cruel and saw her as a slave. She wanted to run away from her life, to be free from the emptiness ahead of her. You can see grub!Damara smiling up at Doc Scratch, kind and cheerful like her Beforan self used to be. She was treated horribly in both lives by everyone she knew. She never had one real friend. Homestuck Fans don't realize just how tragic the story of the Handmaid really is, both before and after the Scratch. If she were given a little more character development in canon and given more opportunities to show her real personality, she wouldn't just be brushed off as a desperate weeaboo hooker. I don't care about Kurloz and Meulin, Aradia and Sollux, or even the Disciple. She is the single saddest character in all Homestuck.
Holly Berries - I one hundred percent agree with what you say about the Handmaid, but Damara... well, there are a lot of ways to interpret what happened there. It's pretty obvious she got the short-end of the shit-stick, but to what extent, and exactly how much of her behavior is from trauma and what is just her, we will probably never know. But, yes, Damara/The Handmaid is a very underrated character.

Christopher Cordero I know the Handmaid was destined to be like that, but it's still sad. Damara was abandoned by pretty much everyone. She never learned Japanese, either, if you've read Aranea's dialogue you'll know she has an Eastern Beforan accent, and has terrible English. She spoke in poor Japanese because of where she lived. Also Lost Weeaboos.
Being reminded that the Handmaid is "The Lost Child" and remembering all the things that put her on the wrong side, it makes me sad. She didn't have freedom, or a culture, or anything. Her greatest wish is to be allowed to die in a battle against her replacement. I really wish she got her own comic book.
Broken Bloom I think that's how most of the fandom sees the Megido family or bloodline, honestly I haven't gotten to Damara or Handmaid yet but Aradia is just misunderstood, she's actually a really cool character in my opinion.
Honestly I think that the fandom hates her and the whole Megido bloodline because they are (technically) the lowest bloods on the hemospectrum. I know most Trolls don't judge others based on their blood color, but it just makes sense to me.
I've become a lot more sympathetic towards Damara recently after realizing that the Handmaid (and the little girl we see in Scratch's house) was actually her (or at least a version of her), and after finding out that she only became the way she was because of Meenah and Rufioh. She's probably one of the most tragic characters in Homestuck, which is saying something when you've got characters like Davesprite, Calliope, Mituna, Nepeta, Aradia... damn there are a lot of surprisingly tragic characters when you think about it.

Homestuck is a mix of sad, funny, awesome and serious. Hussie is the master of mixing moods ON THE SAME FUCKING SCENE. For example, somebody just *died* and as Karkat mourns said character, what do we see? *Fucking Gamzee goofing off in the background.* And it FITS.
This song symbolizes her so well it is saddening, cause honestly a lot could be predicted upon her behavior, her personality and many other things, since not much is known about her. She might actually be one of the trolls we know the least about. What I get from the song itself tied in with prior knowledge of her existence and behavior from what we have seen, it represents her wanting, her yearning for freedom, to run away, to become that lost child. She wants nothing more than to get away from everything she knows, but reality hits her hard as you hear fire in the back, the fire of him stirring inside her, his power which controls her to the fine point of her being. This leading into the ominous ticking and intensity and realization of what she must do to escape this madness that isn't even a life, she must die, but she is unable to kill herself, with the last notes fading away she is purposed her salvation as a mission, to kill the most influential person in all of Alternia.

(she was probably 6 sweeps or younger at this point.) instead of damara and her suitor falling in love and adapting together, he cheated on her with someone who thought she was scum. after he broke up with damara, the man her ex was in love with teased her. she reacted by killing him. later, she'd kill her previous matesprit as well. after that, she was invited to play sgrub. (or sburb? i dont remember) her leader was incompetent and believed that the only way to have her team succeed was to anger them. i guess that worked for the most part, but not for damara. already filled with rage from her previous encounters, she killed her leader who stood in her way. sure, damara seems like an asshole. and a slut but what can you do when the one troll who seemed to care about you turned on you the second you met them? she had nothing to turn to. -also her post scratch self was used as a fuckin slave by a man that looks like mysterio from spiderman-

Back when I was a homestuck fan (around 2015) I always liked to talk about it with my grandpa, cause he was always there for me and felt like a father figure. Whenever my dad wasn’t there, my grandpa waited for me with open arms. I remember playing this song and seeing him peacefully sleeping. Heh, makes me tear up whenever I remember him sleeping, cause that expression was the same one he had when I found him dead from a heart attack. I was 11-12 years old when I heard screamings coming from my granny, and the last thing I saw were paramedics coming to our house and trying to revive him, but it was no use. When everyone left the room I remember entering without permission, and I saw him on the floor, sleeping. Whoever saw him would never thought of him dying, he was just sleeping, peacefully. He was already suffering, enduring Parkinson was no joke. Thank you, so much for bringing memories with this song
As a fan of both Homestuck and Undertale (Homestuck is my preferred fandom) I can definitely recognise bits from Toby's music that inspired the UT soundtrack over than the glaringly obvious Megalovania. In this song the riff that pays is obviously what inspired Heartache, Toriel Dreemurr's battle theme.
I can imagine a young girl curled up in to a ball and slowly floating in space with images of dead people in her head and slowly she starts to grow still drifting in endless space. Never knowing kindness, love, laughter and a friend. Living a meaningless life. She just can't wait for her endless drifting to stop and she can be free of this meaningless life. This is indeed a lost child :(
The Handmaiden will remain one of my most beloved Ancestors, because her tale is wrought with pain that few others have experienced. Imagine being told your entire life that you exist to sabotage what could have been your own people. Your own life would extend for countless sweeps as you fulfil the purpose you were meant for. Imagine having lost every bit of hope you had left, so much that death was your final reward. She's so heart-wrenching, it just breaks my own heart in the process.

What we see as reality she sees as a nightmare, and every time she comes to this nightmare she is scared and desperate for relief from the insanity. Her parents are breaking apart and she doesn't have any friends because she acts so weird. She crawls back to the world she calls home and gets lost, never wanting to go back and stay in the world where she feels loved and happy.

She is the version of the Handmaiden that existed before the scratch, turning Beforus into Alternia, and Aradia would be the one that would take her place as Ancestor in her timeline. At one point while cyborg slick is in Scratch's manor, It says (in the 2nd person pov of slick) "something something Damara's room" Even though it's the handmaid that lives there, her name is still Damara, while the "Ancestor names" are more of their titles.
this comment is four years old but idc. the ancestors and dancestors are the same, living beings, just put in different times and different places. when a scratch occurs, it doesnt create new trolls, it just adjusts the dropoff points of old ones. this is why the alpha kids werent ectobilogized in their session, john already did that. a scratch is a hard reset for the universe. the dancestors arent just duplicates, theyre the VERY SAME trolls as the ancestors.

Man.. Homestuck music is really underrated
Dunno man, her drastic change reeks of Lil Cal/iborn influence to me...I mean aries is p fiery and isn't really suited for meekness so I can see *some* change from what she used to be like, but they also are warriors and fiercely protective friends and lovers, not they type to just give up on everything and everyone without a fight...and didn't aranea say something along the lines of "it seemed like something had changed her"? Combined with what we've seen Lil Cal being able to do to invade ppls' minds, I don't think her change of attitude was entirely her own. :c

Well, you see, Damara is a dancestor. Desecendent/Ancestor. She is the version of the Handmaiden that existed before the scratch, turning Beforus into Alternia, and Aradia would be the one that would take her place as Ancestor in her timeline. Although not in the exact same situation, since Beforus was peaceful and had no Doc Scratch. It is a bit confusing, but Homestuck is known for its Weird Time Shit.

It's confirmed that the ancestors have the same names as their beforan counterparts. At one point while cyborg slick is in Scratch's manor, It says (in the 2nd person pov of slick) "something something Damara's room" Even though it's the handmaid that lives there, her name is still Damara, while the "Ancestor names" are more of their titles.
this comment is four years old but idc. the ancestors and dancestors are the same, living beings, just put in different times and different places. when a scratch occurs, it doesnt create new trolls, it just adjusts the dropoff points of old ones. this is why the alpha kids werent ectobilogized in their session, john already did that.
a scratch is a hard reset for the universe. the dancestors arent just duplicates, theyre the VERY SAME trolls as the ancestors.
