- Janice joins us for a conversation on global African unity. We discuss the stereotypes that keep us divided. Most of the stereotypes are based on Anti-Black propaganda & misinformation.
As an African American who actually loves Africa and not just talks about it but also visits on the regular, I think this problem is real. The main problem is that we (on both sides) have fell for the white mans propaganda. The view African Americans have of Africa as a continent is completely wrong and the other way around.
I had this argument with my brothers in college who were hyped about going to Europe but never even planned on visiting Africa. When you, as a black person, want to see France more than Cameroon...something isn't right. You are brainwashed.
The African Americans who are interested in Africa always talk about Egypt and Sudan but never about Senegal and Benin. This is also an issue in our community. As children of west Africans, we should love west Africa much more. Rich history, beautiful people and breathtaking landscapes.

Black woman here with plenty of African friends. I haven't noticed a divide. We all party together, eat together, visit the same night clubs, and laugh together. What I have noticed, is that African men tend to be highly successful and are okay with buying women things and going out on dates. My black guy friends just like to Netflix and Chill. I guess things are different in Houston.

I've noticed that when africans come to this country (like her parents did) they mostly live in white neighborhoods?? They are accepted more easily in their neighborhoods then we are?? Hardly ever see africans with thick accents in the projects with us?? Seems like no immigrants come here and start completely from the bottom, it's like they come in with some kind of money or at least come into a family type community (asian, italian, mexican) that's willing to help them.... we have the most right to be here but have less rights and liberties then everybody else.
I'm a black man from the Caribbean. I run a Tailoring establishment and fashion boutique in NJ. A black American woman was referred to me by another black American client. Her description of me was that "he does good work, excellent tailor, but he is not a brother" I was like why did she feel the need to say he's not a brother. In other words he is not one of us. This type of mindset is on both sides, African and African Americans. It's unfortunate that we allow ourselves to be the victims of the divide that "other people" set in motion for us as a people universally. Blacks need to unite regardless of where they come from. If you who are without fault see your brother going the wrong way,or stumbles don't separate yourself from him or think you are better. Instead pick your brother up. Help him to do better empower each other. Only then, we as a black nation of people universally would be a force to recon with in this country.
Unity is based on how well we work with each other not assimilation.

I believe that if we acknowledge the root of the problem and we take it before the Most High God; our father, in prayer, he will restore all things.

Thanks so much for this discussion. I am an African-American woman raised in DC. There was a large African student population at Howard University during my student days. Many African students were very disparaging of African-American and many African men openly expressed a desire to exclusively date white women. I came to understand that many Africans from West Africa are the descendants of people who captured and sold other Africans just as I am the descendant of slaves, those who were captured and sold. It's also true that "race" is a European construct. African identity is tribal and familial. I am the proud descendant of slaves. I think that a reluctant so to talk about our true history doesn't serve our community. Failure to truely talk about our history allows white people to escape their monstrous history.

Here in South Africa, "African" and "Black" mean exactly the same thing!!! I dont know about the rest of the African continent.
And strangely, as far as racism is concerned I relate more to Black Americans than I relate to Nigerians, Kenyans, Congolese etc (even though i'm African).. maybe its because these other Africans did not experience the extreme racism, we Black South Africans experienced at the hands of White people.
This is why many Black Americans feel closer to South Africans eventhough we are mostly from West Africa bc we can relate to black south Africans and even the Coloureds of South Africa. The mentality is very similar we share the same psychological problems as you regarding white rule.

This is part of the reason why blacks needs to come to terms with this identity issue and also the truth about the lie of ethnicity which was used as divide and conqur by Europe to Africa post 1890 and Latin America post 1492 and the fact that blacks already existed there before such time frames.
There's a divide with Africans amongst Africans. Why would Africans amongst African American be any different. Everybody focus more on differences than similarities. For example Africans focus more on differences in culture over similarities in color & race just amongst other continental Africans. Whereas African American focus on race & color over culture.
Also I was told by many African immigrant that when they go thru immigration their told if they wanna go far in America they should stay away from African American, purposely to divide the two.

I am an AA with African friends and AA friends; and I find that some Africans do not get along with other Africans. Over 25 years ago I got a scholarship from my country, a french speaking country ,in west africa and I chose America because I said to myself that I will feel comfortable over there because of my black american brothers and sisters. I got desillusionned as I did not get the acceptance I expected.. Some made a mockery of us saying we come from the jungle and that we live in trees and that they are better than us. Some did not want to associate with us because according to them our ancesters sold them as slaves. I was shocked. I grew up in Africa listening to all types of music particularly American music. We really admired our black folks: James Brown, Lou Rawls Teddy pendergrass, Wilson Picket Temptations, Little Richard, BB King, The Jackson five Michael Jackson and a whole lot more. Ironically I did not have black friends but white ones. It was one of them who led me to know and accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I had a negative experience with black americans during my 6 year sojourn in America. Recently, I came accross this show I really enjoyed it. When I was in the US I did not take time to learn Black History . I am learning a lot from this show. It is high time we changed our mentality and thought patterns on both sides. African americans shoukd not look down on Africans they should embrace them. Africans shoud learn about black american history in order to understand what they have been going through up to this time and age and sympathize with them. Let us get united .

Both your points are great, however I think the term "African" is being dominated by the fact that most African Americans come into contact with west and east africans. Speaking as a Southern African myself and with the history of Apartheid namely in South Africa, Zimbabwe etc I think we can sympathise with the African American narrative more so than the rest of Africa. We do understand that systematic discrimination exists but as southern africans we are taught that victimhood cant be used as a scapegoat which I guess is more in line with the rest of Africa in that respect.

Now she’s realized that when it comes to white people, they see us as the same thing. We should come together as people from the same place. I feel like the reason the media separates African Americans and Africans is because white people are afraid of what we could do once we come together. Africa has all the natural resources and African Americans and other people of the African diaspora have the knowledge on how to use them. My cousin talked about this before...one of her best friends in college was African and she was told that Africans often get offended if they are mistaken for African-Americans, who they consider poorly-educated and low-class.

Most African Americans do not know where their ancestors came from, we are descendants of enslaved africans, and we have been here subjugated for 400 years where as she is the daughter of immigrants who really do not have ties here.

What a very good topic. Janice keep up the research. I think we need to develop the psychology of bringing the two cultures together. I was very excited about being around Africans and other blacks from other countries when I studied nursing. I remember growing up with the perception from my parents that the Motherland was great. We had the African Art and the posters, African colors, flags, displayed in our homes in the 70s. The issue I personally experienced was that other cultures needed help with English and often requested to study with me. I felt however handled with a long handled spoon however when it came to socializing. I picked up on the vibes that Janice speaks of that I wasn't worthy other than to help with studying. It was hurtful, and that's when I realized that no matter how hard we were working to educate ourselves, we weren't going to be accepted by the other cultures. We have a long way to go.

The issue is simple. The immigrant (of any race) arrives in the US with 3 truths.
1) The place they left has less economic opportunity, freedom and safety than the US.
2) Their own historical and social understanding. Even in strife at the homeland, are not brainwashed to think themselves inferior.
3) A desire to manipulate the US system to their advantage as its more accessible to do so, compared to their home country.
Or to put it simple.....
They're aware of the opportunities, they're awake to their true selves, they're agressive in pursuing their goal as a community.

The reason why Asians are called the “model minority” is because asian cultures decided to adapt to whites rather than stand up against them. Literally everything we have comes from China and other Asian countries but instead of helping their own people, they donate more money to the white man. No matter what Asians do, they will always be rewarded by white people because they’ve accepted that. Black people won’t. We’re not looking to be accepted into a white society to instead to create our own. We’re the real model students. But white people don’t want us to think that and start getting ideas. If black people realized that they have accomplished much better things than white people, then we would have no reason to hold ourselves back. We would be proud of the fact that we’re African and wear our skin color like a badge.
This could change by educationing blacks on who they are as a ppl. Having conferences, teaching in after scool programs, churches, black neighborhoods, etc. Could help use to connect and communicate.
Actually there is the same division amongst other groups. It's just that we're so into what others think of us that we can't see the struggle of others.
The real is acceptance of one and another. My husband was from Kenya and he was a Mormon. He has done a lot of missionary work for the Mormon Church. After he lived in the USA for years, He made so friends that whites, Asians, Latin and blacks that are members.
From what I've noticed (and this is completely from my own experiences and pov) Asians are prospering in college, however unlike some other minority groups, they earn their degrees and go back home to build up their communities. That might be the reason for the stats she mentioned.

It becomes evident two black people that have not been raised in a white environment. is the exact thing that has happened to my daughter who assumed the 31 years of age. I don't have to say anything regarding the choice of marriage mate because you already know. Kudos to Janice for delving into in gaining the knowledge of black history. additionally, we know who the usual suspect is in creating confusion amongst people. they are very effective in causing divisions. As you know we must unify to become a strong consolidated force to be reckoned with.

I worked in Texas at a nursing home where there where all African. They treated me like shit. I was polite to them and they where still mean. And my boss was African to and he ended up suspending me for being inappropriate with a resident. The resident was a old Hebrew Israelite and had been teaching me about who we are as negros. One of them heard us praying and said we locked the door so he couldn't give his meds. It was a lye but I was asked transfer and work some where else outside Irving where I worked. Them Africans lied on me. Alot of them hate us.
She's double talking. On one hand she's saying many African immigrants want nothing to do with black Americans but said many African immigrants expect black Americans to embrace them more. I'm sorry but I won't embrace anyone who feels that way. Why would you when they are trying their hardest to NOT unite with black Americans ?

Fact is that there is a lot of ignorance amongst the Afro Caribbean and African American directed against the indigenous African. I also know that there are a lot of African Caribbean and African Americans who love and esteem Africa and Africans. I have strong African features, so I am often regarded as African. I happened to be in New York a few years ago and was told 'African go home' by this idiot black American that I had never met before. He did not know me either, but upon seeing me on the street, started screaming at the top of his lungs 'African go home'. I think it underscores the unwarranted and unprovoked aggression that some African Americans, who are plagued by ignorance, have towards Africans. Compare and contrast this to the mentality of the (mainly Nigerian) brothers and sisters I have been around, from whom I have learnt a great deal, including, how to be humble yet strong and confident, how to be gracious, how to be respectful of others. Believe it or not, it is the African (Nigerian) that taught me these basic virtues and I feel that my life has been enriched by this.

In all honestly i stopped associating a lot with our own Black people in America that have American parents and background. Nearly all my friends except 1 is black and from Africa or has a African background but was born in America.
Reason why is because most of us born in america with a american background have a GENOCIDAL MINDSET we here embrace everything that KILLS us directly or indirectly. I couldn't be apart of such a PASSIONLESS and PRIDELESS people. There is hope but i dont seen it within our people here(except a few).
Those few(including myself) must inform our Family from another land or the motherland so they will be more conscious and prepared.

I agree with you bro.. Most Africans don't take their time to understand and educate themselves about the history of blacks in America. On the other hand, I could understand why our brothers and sisters from Africa don't educate themselves.. They are in a survival mood trying to make ends meet and help their families back home. Also, the perception of Americans of Africa through the media is mostly about bad things (poverty, disease, etc.).. it will take efforts from both sides to bridge the gap.

Lets be real, as a black man from the wonderful city of chicago, most of the woman in my neighborhood were on welfare and had no intent of working at all. Also I think that as blacks we embrace hip hop culture instead of embracing black progressive culture, meaning we shun education and learning to be an entrepreneur.
