- Medal of honor: above and beyond isnt a bad game but it missed the mark in so many areas and could have been so much more. In this video I break down why I think the game flopped and how the developers didnt really get what makes a great VR game.

Just to be clear, I enjoyed the game overall, I paid full price for it and have no regrets but its pretty clear the game hasnt sold very well so I wanted to give my opinion on why that is, this video isnt designed to crap on it but just try to give critical feedback on how the game could have been better and potentially sold better.
Its a shame because I really like the multiplayer of this game but there is no one to play against.
What specs did your pc have, also what VR headset are you using?
Im using a valve index with a RTX 3080 Ryzen 3600
Did i read somewhere it was one of the top 10 sellers during December?
Hey, what VR headset are you on? I've subbed and watched a few vids and your graphics are insane, I play on the Quest 2 so I assume that the graphics are better for you because you play with a headset thats connected to a computer?
@@flamingphoenix3202 yeah you can link the quest to a pc as well
the standard for VR games are started to get higher
hopefully, developers will live up to that standard going forward
when you are talking about a triple-A studio then naturally the expectations are high. if Medal Of Honor VR was made by a small team with a limited budget it wouldn't have been received this badly
Agreed, I'm not accepting crappy games or shitty questicles period. Get outta here with that junk. I got better things to play.
@@TheOGjarilo Questicles? Is that like a listicle of quests?
Also I'm with you on having better things to play. The big list of shit you don't do as a VR dev is easily googled. If they can't be bothered to google that list, I can't be bothered to buy their game.
@@poisonouslead85 Yea, no kidding. Like no controller based movement and smooth turn on launch. Did they forget to get someone to play their game ?
I don't see that. With the Quest and the priority of most developer to focus on that device the visual quality of VR Games goes down again. Yes we count more players at the moment, but we will lose them very soon when the first WOW-Effect is gone. The only thing PCVR really needs is 4 real AAA Blockbusters a year to get more PC Gamer onboard (Aylex showed us how it could go). I'm pretty sure that the Quest will not save VR... it will finally kill the hole VR Hype from 2015-2018.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how poorly optimized it is. That was the main reason I think this game failed, I have a beast of a rig and could barely run it while at the same time can run Half Life Alyx at Ultra settings in 120hz 4k resolution on the same pc.
Yeah Half life Alyx did an unbelievably good job with optimizing the game. Medal of Honor not so much...
fancy seeing you here D
Do you have any advice for someone trying to build a gaming pc? I'd love to play the most demanding games on max settings (how I think they should be played) but now I just want something that can play vr games with np, that I can afford *cough* if possible 😅
@@Famiry_Guy_Ken You on a budget my friend?
@@swishasweetrold yea, pretty broke. Otherwise I'll just pay someone to do it all for me 😁
I fear investors will just see it as a VR related failure. I wish a big studio / publisher would take talented guys like the ones which made Pavlov to nail the feel and let the big boys do the story around it.
@Cameron Something they rejected pavlov, but made a deal with a similar Game, onward, that ir was a good Game, but that deal kill It as the devs had to downgrade It a ton for It to be playable in quest.
@Cameron Something hey man Shooty Fruity is a pretty engaging wave shooter/job sim hybrid. Can't defend space channel 5 though thats pretty bad
That's what I was saying! A team of indie devs have created a free game with better gunplay than a full company!
I heard Boneworks is an extremely good VR game.
Idk man, i feel like the pavlov ww2 update just blew all these types of war games out of the water
Yep, if some pig publisher or studio would team up with them would be incredible, take what they already achieved, add some physics, polish and build a story/full game around it instead of "just" an incredible mod based multi-player shooter
It kind of looks like Playstation 2 era shit though.
what about Onward? I heard it's pretty good? I prefer a slower pace starting out. I heard Pavlov is likened to Counter Strike (which I hate)
@@mootpoint7053 onward is good! Really basic graphics but the community is great and the game play/gun play is awesome! Its on sale right now too.
@@MixedRealitySimRacing We had already a game (Onward) that was incredible (already in 2016) and if they had partnered with Valve it could have been a real CS:VR. But Facebook sold them and the team downgraded the hole game to PC graphics from 2000. It's a shame how Oculus destroys the hole VR market! Yes, we have at the moment more VR users, but the Quest Gamer will lose their interest very soon when the first VR -WOW- Effect goes away 5 weeks after Christmas. The only way to save PCVR are more AAA Blockbuster like HL-Aylex that get the interest of all the millions of PC Gamers out there. But I think it's already too late.
The lack of regional prices blew it for me. They literally went Above and Beyond with the price
It went down by twenty which I’m guessing the original price was 60 so it’s 40 last time I looked which is still to much for this game even with recent reviews
It’s specs are far to high to say how bad the game looks, yet half life alyx runs perfectly on my system
Yes
If you can run Half-life alyx on your system, you can run this Medal of honor (only if you have 170gb free space).
@@EddieVonMeyer it ran really poorly for me even though I have a decent pc, stuttering and frame drops like mad
@@Tobo226 What specs do you have ? The perf also depends if you play on oculus or Steam SDK (I had a big perf improvement since the last update).
@@Wylie288 Maybe the last nvidia drivers fixed some issues now, but I have a few Framedrop when playing steamVR game with my rift S, when it's smoother on oculus sdk.
Oh man when you said an expedition like 1917 with a darker look you had my imagination going.... I hope they do another attemp
I doubt they will attempt with how bad this flopped.
@@randyx007 nah they will, 2 reasons why. 1) EA has fuck you type of money, they can make flop after flop and they will be fine. 2) if they still stuck to the Medal Of Honor IP after the debacle that was Warfighter, they’ll stick to it after this.
@@squirtle53 that is a fair point! Lots of money but we shall see if they think it is a money maker. Business people only care about the bottom line but they have a chance to corner the market!
I think you missed a few reasons on why the game has failed.
1. The system requirements are down right insane. A massive 160GB install (more required for download if you're on Oculus). Graphical requirements are a 2080, and on launch there was no flexibility in the graphical settings. Since then they have minorly improved the graphic settings past the mere Low, Medium and High, however its still a resource hog. I mean how big is the market for a game that requires at least 160GB of free space, a 2080 AND a VR headset. This alone would kill the multiplayer servers
2. The game was not priced in a way to support multiplayer. The VR community is too small to toss out $60 games and expect the multiplayer servers to be populated. Combined with all the issues of the above, and the game never stood a chance.
With just these 2 issues alone, the game would need to be damn near perfect, Half Life Alyx levels of perfect to succeed. But it obviously also has serious gameplay issues. My theory is, this game failed because Oculus pulled the rug out from underneath Respawn when they announced Rift S was being discontinued in favor of the quest. At that point Respawn probably devoted resources to other projects. Leaving this game with a much smaller team and now we get an underdeveloped game from a AAA devs.
Im new to all this vr this is my 2nd fps game ive had on it an im absolutely in love with it..but ur comment was from 10months ago so im guessing they worked stuff out..i play it w/o a computer they must have scaled the size way back cuz it was 60gigs which is still alot..but omg why would it be 160gigs do u think the game was originally much longer an more detailed game?
@@eyecandyquartz8494 No I just don't think they really cared about optimizing the game for storage. And the PCVR version is basically dead. The Quest version probably has decent multiplayer, but they really botched the PCVR launch. I am glad its doing better on quest.
Well you haven’t even played the game saying all that crap
@@bmackVR i don't have a rtx 2080 (i don't even have a rtx card) and the game turned
@@omphya6229 That comment is over a year old.... it was in response to how the game was at the time and I don't care enough to go back and change it lol
I would've forgiven all of these things if it had been optimized properly. I have a fairly high spec PC which runs HLA and Asgard's Wrath flawlessly, but it doesn't even meet minimum specs. That's a huge loss of potential customers. I've heard people have had some luck on a similar setup but I wasn't going to risk it for the price, space required, etc.
Ran fine for me on a 1080 ti. Not as well as HL:A but better than Asgard's Wrath performance wise.
This, and it should have been much cheaper! Who did they think was going to pay $60 for this game?
When they said that they purposefully made the artstyle less realistic because it’s a VR game and they are concerned about it being to real I already knew I was not gonna but the game
Devs make games like this and say “well VR is just not profitable enough for a AAA title”
I'm glad Alyx exists as proof a great cinematic AAA game in VR can be done
Well make shit right and people will buy it. Alyx is proof of that. The game has not dropped to half of its regular price unless I have missed it, yet it is still selling and those that have played it have nothing but praises for it. Simple as that.
Personally I suspect Oculus lost interest in pc vr, and possibly reduced funding for this, and just kind of threw it out there to cut there losses as it couldn't be made to work on the quest. I find it hard to believe with the dev behind this, that this is all we got.
The only thing I disagree with you is the weapon handling, I love that its forgiving. Try playing pavlov VR for example, can be a major pain to find the frecking slider sometimes, so I like that they did this. I agree on the shotgun though, putting the shells in its always really fun in VR.
Hi nano
Not once you're used to it; since there is so much manipulation of the weapon I find it becomes second nature unlike something like population one which always feels stiff.
@@Nubkiller312 true
Bro not once have I had an issue handling pavlov weapons. Infact after I played this I played pavlov because it felt so much better to use
I feel that with VR, developers have to put actual effort into their games which they haven't had to do on the flat screen. Then they might blame their failures on VR itself.
My biggest issue with the campaign was the design in some areas. In the the Norwegian factory, enemy spawns are triggered by proximity, and sometimes I would run from a fight only to be surprised by another. In addition to this, I played on the hardest difficulty, and the bolt-action troopers were on point with Halo 2’s sniper jackals
You didn't even mention the number one reason the game failed: *minimum specs*
Really great analysis. The best one-line blurb that they should put in their featured reviews section and pretty much sums up the entire game's flaws: "I wonder how much playtesting they did."
Seriously, what's up with cutscenes not letting me pick my nose?
In the meeting room like tho one at 3:18 if you walk in real life around the table and look through the doors in real life, they actually have rooms, there’s a door labeled map room and if you look through the door it actually has stuff inside and also the doctors office that you start out in is also in one of the rooms, Medal of Honor vr has so much detail and that’s one of the reasons I love this game.
You din't mention the elephant in the room: The high system requirements that scares away a lot of people, especially now, that it's impossible to build a rig with decent prices.
I don't mind the art style personally. They didn't go for the super serious tone of most shooters, and feels more like "the fun adventures of Captain America and Bucky", and I'm glad. Had enough of the bleak grey seriousness on the flat screen. And tbh, until we have better resolution, and better performance, photorealistic style isn't very good for VR. The same reason why the giant lego duplo buttons of job simulator works better then the UI of elite dangerous. The tech just isn't there yet to support movie quality scenes. It's getting there, with headsets like the G2 or the Quest2, but keep in mind when they started developing the game there was only rift and vive with their horrible SDE.
I think it's less about the artstyle and more about the level design. Alyx levels felt tighter and more...organic? I felt similarly with Boneworks, especially the first museum level.
Dude, Half Life: Alyx looks amazing. I think that style is perfect for VR due to how immersive it is
Great analysis I agree with but one point you could have added is the insane high hardware requirement.
They launched the game without any graphics options (but a resolution presets). I actually had to change the graphics myself in the .ini files to make it playable (2070 mobile).
Even PC releases from the worst year ever for PC ports, 2013, still generally had graphics settings. Absolutely unacceptable.
@@BDNeon poor people such as myself who use quest 2 be chilling rn
I absolutely love this game! I didn't try the multiplayer since I'm mostly interested in the solo campaign but I'm really having a blast! I actually think they did a great job with the characters, conveying that good old school camaraderie feeling like in Dirty Dozen or Mash. The only drawbacks I found are the objects interaction (definitely less polished than in Alyx) and the performance, I play this game on Shadow Boost PC and some outdoor parts of the game area bit too demanding . Other than that it's absolutely great, one of the best VR game ever released!
Its so cool you started uploading again! Your gonna get the same views as before if you keep going. Great great channel
Great video as always :)
As a fan of cod I was really looking for the multiplayer :/. Thankfully Pavlov saved that with the WWII update.
BTW I think you should make a video about the Pavlov WWII update :D.
I'd kill for a remake of Allied Assault, the Normandy section is still one
my favourite game levels ever.
Havent played Allied assault for years, but from what i remember, id love a remake, even more if it was VR
I just wanted to top off my mag without cocking my weapon every time....
And hold my rifle with one hand and be able to grab my pistol at the same time.
I desperately wanted this to be good, man.
Best review of this game I have seen. Good work
I just refunded the game. Biggest problem for me was the complete lack of online players. I bought it primarily because I was looking for a triple-A feeling alternative to Pavlov. And while the game actually does give you that feeling, as a multiplayer game this feeling is quite useless if you don't have people to play with. So I will get it on sale some day so I can play the single player campaign. But man, am I glad to see that snipers actually have an option for realistic scopes. The fake 2D scopes were one of my major gripes with the gameplay. Unfortunately I didn't discover this setting in the options menu before I refunded.
The character models and facial animations in the game also look pretty bad/last-gen. Compared to something like HL:A it's not even close. So most of the 1st two hours of the game basically puts the worst part of the game front and center. I also highly doubt this game had anywhere near the budget or development time of Half Life:Alyx. The game feels rushed and cheap tbh. Not to mention a lot of the creative decisions made for the game make little sense and seem like they were made by someone with little experience with VR. Such as the scope on the sniper rifle and pacing. The lighting is also pretty lackluster in many scenes which makes the assets look worse.
On point. Taking your control is the nr1 mistake modern games make. I play more older games in VR than ever.
I really enjoy your videos. Great one!
underrated youtuber i really enjoy your videos keep it up
The worst part about the tank ride? If you peak your head inside, you can see that the tank is fully modeled, but under normal circumstances, you would never be able to see or experience that
I really wish they would've went more dark and gritty with this game. They still could've had some of the comedic parts, because that did feel very classic MoH. Hopefully they try it again, because they can definitely make an amazing game.
If it wasn't for the exact things you've mentioned I would have bought it. Waiting for some improvements or either price to drop.
This game looks amazing with the graphics settings dialed all the way up, not quite Alyx level but pretty high up there. Alot of the biggest issues had been fixed by the time I played it.
What they shouldve done is made a base where you talk to people and can teat out guns etc, then you go and grab a truck thing or something to be transported to your mission, and missions more open ended etc
Maybe it would've been a better idea for them to port one or more of their existing games to VR (ala Dr Beef) and then use the knowledge they gained from the feedback from that experience to create a VR standalone.
Yeah, Can you imagine Titanfall2 in VR? I played it a little bit in HelixVision and it was brilliant, just a little bit too taxing for my PC.
@@IKvASS My god, Titanfall 2 in VR would be incredible.
main reason i'm not touching it is the absurd install size. Modern AAA games have gotten so out of control with how unoptimised they are, that 170 gigs for a single game VR is seriously now considered "acceptable" by most devs. I'm not dedicating a whole 10th of my storage space to a single fucking game
Incredibly well done constructive feedback. I didn’t feel as if you were maliciously attacking the developers at any point in the video. Props to you
Really insightful video ! Thank you
It baffles me that there seems to have been no playtesting, the cheesy "Victory" screen ? Was this game done by a Junior team at respawn ? An ddthe no moving follow the dialogue don't play was really a bad choice, no one wants that in a VR game
They fixed that with the very first patch
I got into the VR scene two months ago and I was blown away playing Alyx. That’s how a VR game is done, optimized, well crafted all around, beautiful and up to date textures, lighting, etc. you get the point, and what I’m trying to say is that there is no excuse for AAA devs to release games like this especially with Alyx being a year or more older , it seems they could’ve learned so much from Alyx or other games in order to make this release succeed. This looks instead as a rushed product, with poor dedication and passion. The VR community is growing and they have to realize that these same gamers are coming from a 2D base community and so the standards are high for VR just like its counterpart. Not just because it’s VR we are going to accept anything thrown at us. What a shame because I really wanted to give this a try.
All i want is older games getting a good vr overhaul, games like far cry 2 or even the medal of honor from 2010.
I really enjoyed the game but you make a good point about the 1st 2 hours. I do recall early on saying to myself "is this the way its going to the entire game? " . Glad I stuck with it though. Really excellent experience and I want to do a 2nd run through.
Yeah, pretty much my experience. For the first hour I was like "please tell me it's not going to be like this all the time!". Then you reach the Gestapo HQ and from that point on the game becomes what you'd expect from it, like a classical MoH game. I thought it was absolutely fantastic, I've played it twice already and a few hours on multiplayer which was also great, and it won't take long before I do another run.
@@Gonzax yeah you might guess their intent was to ease people in but I'm not thinking this was a game for new VR users but seasoned players looking for the MOH experience.
As someone else who played all the way through the game (including all the cool little museum bits and some of the documentaries) I agree with most of your points but I believe the reloading is ok and is designed to be fast paced which is why shotguns auto load and other guns have a huge room for error like half life Alyx does. I also can’t wait for a second respawn be title
The biggest issue for me were the cheesy moments
There’s a moment when sarge has some German lines from Ollie in which the only thing that changes in his voice is his inflection or something
The Germans in cutscenes don’t even speak German usually
They typically speak English with a German accent
Which is fine as it’s acceptable to do it in a goofy game like this
But sarge doesn’t even try to do the German accent he just speaks and then waits 15 second for nazi flash from zootopia here to respond
There’s also other moments in which the characters act corny
Like the tank commander in the tank section
One of my other big problems with the game is on rails sections
It’s just shooting people with your normal guns except moving
Or your shooting planes that just circle so you can’t hit them easily
The on rails sections are just not fun
Then the last two missions: Norway and rocket base
Had just way too many dull firefights
Your just going through hundreds of Germans with your MP40 and barely anything special happens
The funnest part was when you shoot the main bad guy who’s name I don’t care enough to remember
The first time I went through that I had my weapon out and I got him before they give you the chance
But then I shot the scientist in celebration so I screwed around in that scene a lot until Finally I killed him again
Now resident evil 4 was a dream come true in vr they did such a good job just need to find a way to get doom3 vr transfered over the quest off steam
I absolutely hate being frozen in vr. Amazes me they spend all the money and not one person decided to ask someone active in the vr community to test it
I cant hear anyone talking during the multiplayer game. do you have this fix or do you know what the problem is? like how to unmute people. Every time i hit the speaker icon next to the players name in the list it removes the slash from the speaker icon but then comes back immediately. if anyone knows how to help please comment thank you.
Played it recently and i had a blast,im sure people were plagued with crashes and bugs at launch but now seems solid, fps is good but i have a beast pc and an 8kx,amazing vr experience, what is really strange is first 2 3 missions are 5 minutes of gameplay followed by big cutscenes but after that the games suddenly opens up by ALOT,thats proly what determined people to refund in the 2 hour frame and leave a "bad" review.
The biggest problem is the fact MOH is published by EA who always ether rush a game to launch before it's ready or fill it with microtransactions. You can see the former happening here.
Great review. Thank you
as much as it isn't a good quality game, I got so damn attached to Ollie, he was easily my favourite. I knew they were going to kill him off because it was obvious but I still cried
I agree with review almost in 100% except of graphics. Yes visuals are dated but compatible with current early 2020ish vr tech. Also maps and models (airplanes, cars, boats etc) are really well detailed. I'm currently at second playthrough. Taking my time, listening to descriptions that girl on before mission room is giving. It's really precious addon for WWII hobbyst.
I refunded this game after the tutorial when I realized it was as bas as the reviews said it was.
This thing takes up 200 fuckin gigabytes of space, was made by a AAA dev team, had AAA funding, is 60 dollars, and is brand new, yet every fun moment or mechanic is held back by these terrible design choices that make it feel glitchy and outdated
Not worth it
I got a way it can be saved... drop the graphical requirements drop the price to $30-$40 and make it cross play on the quest 2. A story based FPS AAA game with multiplayer on the quest 2 would sell like hot cakes even if graphically it had to be downsized a lot. And then making it crossplay would fill the servers on PCVR and hopefully bring more life to the game overall. Just my two cents.
Still waiting for a good sale on this one. Ill probably pick it up when I see it for 30-35 dollars.
It's totally worth the asking price, to be honest.
It's 47$ today thinking about it
Very thorough and well written review
These points make sense. But I personally really enjoyed the game, and there were barely any parts I didn't like. I had a super fun time with it, and loved the Gallery section. So beautiful.
Very concerned about the damage this will do to AAA VR games in the future.
Devs and marketing failed at looking at the market. Pavlov released a WW2 update, and it is amazing. Like Everything thing in Pavlov it feels empty, and directionless. Pavlov is a sandbox more than a game, but i have spend hours just imagining the potential of VR.
Over an hour in the range just gasping at all the detail and how WW2 guns worked. There are tanks in the Stalingrad map. A bit simplistic, but no other tank game comes even close. Driver has 2 levers like a real tank, but nothing else works. Gunner has realistic loading amin* ranging and shooting interactable parts in the tank.
Any AAA studio has to play Pavlov first and bare minimum start from there. I would kill for a good tank game. No Arcady nonsense like the free to play. And. Any AAA shooter must have at lest same gun mechanics as Pavlov.
Agreed. I think the most important note you hit on is attention to detail. In flat-screen games it's nice but with simpler multiplayer FPSs not AS important because however good the details are you still usually just press r to reload and right click to ADS.
In VR those little details and interactions are suddenly a very important part of the gameplay, and in that at least Pavlov succeeds (the gun interactions are pretty much all spot on unlike Medal of Honor, the tanks have just enough control appropriate for an arcadey game). I'm really looking forward to Armored Front: Tiger Command. It's the only detailed made-for-VR tank game I've seen but it may be a way off.
Also if games like Pavlov can keep increasing multiplayer player count without atrocious performance penalties it will bring me closer to my dream of Red Orchestra in VR!
TigerStripe First of. Thank you for the tip on the upcoming tank game. I had no idea. Second. I played some Pavlov today. Got a custom map for 40 people and a custom map with defender attacker objectives and a spawn room to choose class. Getting closer to red orchestra. Finally I had a realization playing Alyx for 5 min testing mods. Call of duty failed because the devs don’t give a shit about the source material. In any room of Alyx (even mod rooms) there is mountain of detail. I am WW2 buff I could spend hours just examining and moving time accurate stuff and furniture.
Well done review sir
100% agree. Important to realize that a 60$ VR game does not equal good game. VR was not the problem. Poor game design was. So disappointed because i love Respawn, but it felt like they did not take the VR challenge seriously.
Finally a person that gives it actual criticism instead of "This game bad." I did enjoy this game and so did many others but it does have issues. You got the person that goes "Best game ever." and the person that goes "Worst game ever." Happy to see someone that actually says what is bad and good about it.
How about the System requirements? Are they really this ridiculously high?
Should I wait until I can upgrade my rig?
Awesome video!
Maybe for America this price is good, but for Ukraine it coasts in " Steam " 1800 hryven' when avarage salary's 12000 hryven'. It's kind of big deal.
Dudemtahts terrible. Tho $60is still bad
i hope they make another new And improved one, good singleplayer plot is important !
Hopefully they continue to fix it and hopefully drop the price a bit! Was looking forward to this a lot, but it does look a little bit too dated for the price
The biggest problem was that it was a WWII game and the art style. I was never interested in this game from the beginning because of this. Why doesn't someone make a Vietnam game? They should have just given us Titanfall VR. That's what people wanted from Respawn.
I find the reloading and holstering weapons to be smoother than other games (minus Half-life, cause it is great in every way). The cut scenes can be just as annoying as the characters, but once you get into gunplay it is a great time. It really clicked for me while on the train. I will say its the best buy for someone who is freshly into VR games and wants to see what a shooter really feels like, cause they will be impressed with the atmosphere and be paced well. As my friend said playing it for the first time, its like experiencing n64 for the first time again.
You can say all you want with how hard it bombed at the start but this was the most fun game I’ve played on vr and the only one to make me genuinely laugh and cry… I don’t care what it looks like I care about how it feels and nothing can take away from it, ffs I’m on quest and it still was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had
great game, love the gun play, but the performance is mad, i loved the graphics true to it roots, i pay the multiplayer and loving it
mostly with bots :( great video thank you
I don't want a 'VR game', I want a game that supports VR in a way whereby the game-play difference is I have a headset on or I don't, with some variation obviously when it comes to using the controllers instead of the keyboard. I've been playing HLL for a while and really enjoy it (though it still has it's issues), but it would be great if it had VR support from the get go. Presumably VR has simply not been widely adopted enough and therefore the pay off to game developers investing in 'additional' VR functionality isn't worth it, hence 'VR only' titles.
What is the best video card for virtual reality? RX6800XT or RTX 3080? For games like Pavlov and Contractors at 144 FPS at 1440p?
Im using a RTX 3080
I can run pavlov fine with a 1660 but it stutters just a little
It's really sad because I was really excited for the multiplayer.
The single player was just icing on the cake for me.
I like how you respect the game, I personally love everything about it, and it is the best cinematic vr game I have ever played.
And honestly, people really need to stop comparing all vr games to half life Alyx. Alyx is not the best, it's really good, but not the best. The best physics go to boneworks.
I agree with you this is from a favorite CZcamsr of mine a wolf in VR plays it and his style of gameplay is a lot different than the oculus quest two that is poor game design
I have the feeling this was an EA "suicide drop" similar to titanfall 2. They release it with very little love and marketing. Almost seeming to want it to fail so they can go back to the board and say "hey see? VR isn't worth doing".
I agree with every single point on this game. So much could be fixed and I definitely think that Respawn will do amazing if they have another attempt at a VR game
Devs - I didn't buy this because the story and graphics looked like it was made by Disney.
nice review, good points.
I paid full price for it and had a pretty good time. downsides are there's no one on multiplayer. I also don't think the devs compressed the game files 200+ gigs is ridiculous. There are still cheaper VR games that are more fun. If it goes on sale for $30 and you have at least a 2080 and don't mind the downsides I don't think you would regret it.
Personally I lliked the game a lot. I didn't expect anything more or less than what we got. Infact, the general level of the game is far higher than most VR games.
I heard, that in multiplayer the game does not take into account your real life pose. So you can crouch behind window, but other players will see your avatar standing and will be able to damage you.
Maybe they can fix a few things with the quest 2 port. If nothing else you should be able to find multi-player games with other players.
While above & beyond personally doesn't entirely live up to the hype for me, I have started a project called MOHAA:VR -- Which is to say, I'm porting all the OG MOHAA, Spearhead, and Breakthrough maps over to Pavlov VR following the launch of its WW2 gamemodes and weapon sets. More info here: discord.gg/jRMxaxh3Hb
Another major con and a turn off with this game is its stupid horrendous file size and it's poor optimization.
Like the Game doesn't look let alone justify a whopping 180gigs file size and it still looks absolutely dated for a VR game and it's optimization isn't helping either and then we got Alyx which stomps on both category.
and i'd understand if this is some indie game...but this is a AAA Medal of Honor game made by Respawn who made the Phenomenal Fallen order and Titanfall 2.It's kinda shocking and unbelievable that they made this game to a point it feels like it's made by a totally different team.
that's a really good review I have to say.
Also there's that one thing that always interests me and shocks others, why is this game 170 gb.
But ovrerall I have to say, this game was a nice try from Respawn Entertainment, but they surely need to think what they did and if they get a chance for another VR game, they should consider making it more seamless than current, shoot a nazi, get teleported somewhere or wait till they stop talking.
Spot on review. The game was a lot of fun and if you ask me it is one of the best shooters on VR. It’s just not as good as I’d hoped and that’s unfortunate because VR needed another Alyx.
The physics are fine. Most games let you move your hands through walls, and I almost prefer that over what half life alyx did. Also the gun reloading is pretty standard, so I dont know what you're complaining about...
Though overall, I completely agree with the rest
I find it more annoying when something I'm holding in-game gets out of sync with the controller because of the clipping (like hand getting caught on a wall in TWD S&S). In HL Alyx, I pick up an object and it swings like a wet noodle. I hit something with it, and nothing happens. Not so in MoH.
@@RiftTraveller yeah, I 100% agree with that. I hate trying to aim a rifle in walking dead because if flops around. I get making barrels in half life heavy and hard to pick up, but I should be able to pickup a broom and a gun no problem
I literally just want the b17 section
Yeah ofc Alyx did everything better but damn... on the contrary, I want more of this, especially what you critiqued!
A vr game take it all, have me in scripted cinematic without blackbars, use vehicles, mounted guns, jump in out off on things in innovating, brave adrenaline pumping action without the limitations of "oh this could cuase motion sickness or experimental or boring so we shouldn't try" bullcrap...
As well as to take a breather in atmosphere, slow down, while listening/talking to full irl size npcs...
Not just monotone undemanding shooting all the way!! We have of that enough as it is!... -_-
Im one of the refunders. I was playing the 1st 2 hours and the too much dialogue and lack of combat was the refunds for me.
needs 25 v 25 multiplayer
Yes
That's a lot of Bots and no one around when you can't even sell your single player campaign to the audience on Steam.
10:30 oh man. Having to cock the gun every time you reload (even with one in the chamber) is a *huge mistake.* Even though you’re shooting wooden targets, Gun Club VR is fun because the gun mechanics are great. Hot swapping mags without racking the slide is *awesome* - and awards you for counting shots with your pistol or combat shotty. _It’s basically half the game _
You should really check out Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand grenades. It even better than Gun Club VR, has a higher number of guns, more realistic animations, and better graphics. It's pretty much better in every single way. I would highly recommend it.
Tethered vr, high specs and number one " high price"...think that explains low sales. Wish they ported the original MoH.
On top of all of that, there were many parts of the game that were borderline unplayable for Quest 2 + Link users (Which is a bit ridiculous given it's an Oculus funded game). The system requirements are absolutely insane for how mediocre the game looks and feels imo. Loved the shooting, wasn't a big fan of anything else.
I think I should've expected the lack luster experience given what one of the Oculus Studios developers was saying on the Oculus subreddit leading up to launch. About how the main determining factor in gameplay choices for them was making killing Nazi's feel the most satisfying at the sacrifice of everything else.
I think Respawn could totally knock a VR game out of the park... they just need to play some other titles that have done things right and learn from them. Also maybe a bit of external QA since it feels like they only took feedback internally from people working on the game. Not from seasoned VR users.
VR needed this video
probably gonna pick this one up when its on sale but not gonna pay full price
No, it doesn't need to look gritty to be good. The original MoH titles weren't gritty, and instead were light hearted in some parts. Graphics shouldn't matter anyway. As for why the game failed, I got two reasons. One, it was a VR title rather than a normal first person shooter like every other Medal of Honor game. Two, unlike older Medal of Honor games, it was yet another squad or military shooter instead of World War 2 James Bond. We need a Medal of Honor entry that goes back to the roots of old-school fps gameplay and espionage.
