Better to agree to Taliban conditions for talks than not to talk at all? | DW News

  • The UN's political chief has said the Taliban cannot be a part of the international community until they do more for women and girls in Afghanistan. Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo delivered that message following a UN-led meeting on Afghanistan held in the Qatari capital Doha. Taliban leaders were invited to attend for the first time since their return to power in 2021. The government they formed has cracked down on women's freedoms, leading to a situation that human rights groups have described as "gender apartheid."

      The guns were taken by the US military from the local people because they couldn't identify between a normal person and the Taliban, but instead, the Americans gave us assurance that they would never leave or re-armed us if they were leaving. they didn't and just handed the government to the Taliban and gave them guns so you tell me how can locals not surrender?

    We don't need to talk to them at all. The Taliban wants food and money because they suck at governing and no longer have America to prop them up. They want international help without having to conform to international norms. All we have to do it say no. They can adapt or go it alone. It's their choice, they have to live with the consequences. 'Gender apartheid' is something of a mild term for what Taliban men are doing to women and girls in Afganistan. Women have absolutely no rights. They are isolated, kept from education, punished for some dress code. Objecting to these restrictions leads to imprisonment, torture and rape. How the UN (or any country in the world) can decide to comfortably engage with these MEN ONLY is beyond justifiable if they don't hold these guys' feet to the fire. Why no information in this news report about how this country is able to sustain itself economically without women's contribution?

    These so-called 'women activists' have never been chosen by Afghan women who receive financial aid from the international community to run ghost schools. These individuals have built careers on Afghan women's rights and education but have done nothing for Afghan women. The most effective way to address the issues facing Afghan women is to engage directly with the current administrators.

    Even though women must have the right to go to higher education, forcing them isn't the correct way. I believe there are muslin scholars who can talk to the Taliban leaders. Convincing the Taliban leaders tblocking of women to attend higher education will hurt Afghanistan. Other Areb countries are not banning women from learning higher education. Therefore, Taliban leaders must allow women to study higher education. The convincing business must be given to muslin scholars. Forcing Afghan leaders to break out of their culture will have social consequences.
    Yes, having women higher education is very important, but we must be careful not to distrupt the social cohesion of the country.

    • @leavesinautumn5959
      @leavesinautumn5959 Před 2 dny

      You don't know the first thing about Afghanistan. The oppression of women isn't a cultural imperative, it's an ideological one. Women studied without interference in all the years before Taliban rule. Besides there is no unified Afghani culture, there are many (often competing) cultures and groups.
