The quality that goes into these Ghastly Tales of Scotland episodes is fantastic; seems almost like the kind of thing you'd fine on Yesterday. Seriously underrated stuff here, sometimes truth is stranger, more interesting, and far more horrifying than fiction.
That's a really kind comment! Thanks for watching, Lewis! Plenty more where this came from... :) -Martin
Lewis King I agree Lewis, especially your last sentence. 👌
I've only just discovered this channel and I can't get enough of it, especially the Ghastly Tales of Scotland. I'm English, but my Dad's side of the family is Scottish, so I've always been fascinated by Scottish folklore and history. Thank you for all you do, this channel is fantastic!
Thanks for the kind words! You'll find some similar videos on the channel under Ghastly Trails. - Calum
I follow alot of channels for tales of the dark. Your channel, is by far, the best.
Cheers Dakota! I really appreciate that! -Martin
This event has to be my favorite gruesome true crime story ever! Dunno why... just the whole mix of misled scientists, "evil" doctors not caring where these fresh corpses were coming from, and the ghoulish murderers who were farming humans like a modern day bot farms World of Warcraft items.
The narrator also has that right touch of timbre in the voice to really get the chills going up your spine too!
Thanks Tony! I agree completely on this being one of the most gruesome true crime stories; greed, psychopathy and ambition all came together in unholy alignment here. I think the idea of the cheapness of human life to these people is what is most chilling. -Martin
I've been waiting for another of episode of this series it's so well made I wouldn't be surprised to see it on the BBC or History channel, Great work!
High praise indeed! Cheers Cybernator! -Martin
That was brilliant! I hope to many more episodes of true Scottish horror. Thank you.
Cheers, Sheena! There will definitely be more. There is just so much macabre and creepy stuff in both the history and folklore of Scotland -- the massacre of Glencoe, Bible John, the World's End murders, the Loch Ness monster, the Beast of Birkenshaw, the Grey Man of Ben MacDui, etc. etc. -- for us to cover. -Martin
Its so refreshing to be able to use the terms "high quality" and "ghastly" in the same sentence. Keep these coming, please!
Thank you, Marisa! Yes, there will definitely be more of these; I have most of a script for a third episode written, but real life/day job stuff has kept us from getting it shot so far. I do love making these and I'm glad people like them, so I'm eager to get more done! Soon... -Martin
Very well articulated sir. Also liked seeing so many recognizable landmarks of Edinburgh throughout, I need to get back for a visit.
I loved this historical story! Great job sweetheart ♡
Hey Elana, thanks a lot!! Always a pleasure. 👍 -Martin
Ghastly Tales Yw... maybe in the future I will visit. I love history!!! ♡♡♡
THIS channel ROCKS!!!!!! So glad to find you!!!
What a fantastic documentary! So well written with a captivating narrative, breathtaking cinematography (Martin included
Thanks again for the words of encouragement, Jennifer! Have a great New Year when it comes! -Martin
Dr. Knox may have suspected Burke & Hare were murdering subjects but simply ignored it because his need for cadavers for teaching was paramount, as well as knowing he was well insulated from any prosecution that may have resulted.
My thoughts exactly. Thanks for watching! -Martin
This was amazing.
Wow, that means a lot coming from yourself! Love your channel, man. Thanks for watching! -Martin
Thank you Martin and Calum for a fascinating documentary! An excellent job of presentation, appreciated greatly. 👏
+Heidi Thanks Heidi! Some kind words indeed. Glad you enjoyed it! -Martin
+Heidi Thanks Heidi! Some kind words indeed. Glad you enjoyed it! -Martin
Please continue this series.
Descendants of Hare and Laird must be out there and are unaware of their famous ( or infamous!) ancestors. Mrs Hare was nursing a child at the time of the trial ( as mentioned by Roughead in his famous trial series). Worth further investigation surely Ghastly tales! Great stuff guys, and I've enjoyed watching this.
I am so glad I'm getting to catch up on the wonderful things you put up. I subscribed last fall and then had a ton of school work and very little leisure. This is the absolute best presentation of Burke and Hare I've seen, bar none. Great visuals, perfect length and fantastic presenter!
+Angela Chouinard Thanks Angela, that means a lot! 😄 -Martin
Fascinating work, as always! Makes me long for my next trip to Scotland so that I can explore some of the places mentioned more in depth!
Thanks Stephanie! Have a great visit when it comes around. -Martin
Why are there no more in this series?! I love these kinds of videos! Please bring it back!?
Very cool!! I love these history lessons on serial killers. Yet once again i want to learn more!!
A fantastic piece, thank you so much.
Well narrated and your data is proper and correct.... Superliked
I adore this channel and all the different variety it has. when I first subscribed I thought it was just another Creepypasta narration Channel but I was so wrong I can't believe how few of subscribers it has seriously some of the most top quality stuff I've seen yet. keep it up ! :-)
I loved this tale. I saw a rendition of it an old 50's serial Called Thriller with Boris Karloff as the host. The only name that was matched and likeness u could say was jaimie the colorful character. It touches on the legislature being changed etc. Really good episode of thriller. However I immensely enjoyed watching this very much. Thank you.
another great video, subscribed, you deserve more credit for the content it's like watching something on the television great quality.
Thank you, Marianne! Good to have you on board! -Martin.
I loved this documentary.Such professionally done.Well done 👏🏻❤️
Great work as always! You might be interested to know that Burke and Hare are discussed during ghost tours of Melbourne, Victoria (Australia) as early Melbourne had problems with body snatchers.
I did not know that! Very cool! Thanks for watching as always, Elizabeth. Hope you had a great Christmas! -Martin
Ghastly Tales I did, hope you and the rest of Ghastly Tales crew did as well. Looking forward to your next video!
I love the format and the quality! Honestly, this is nothing short of a professional TV documentary. I only wish you guys had more views :s
Cheers Atomschlumpf! High praise! On the subject of views, ahem, you can of course help out by sharing this or any of our videos with any friends you think might be interested! ;) Thanks for watching, dude! -Martin
I'll definitely do that once I find someone suitable lol....so far I've only gotten weird looks
Excellent documentary!! Well done!! Thank you!!
"hang burke, banish hare, burn knox in surgeon's square" so goes the old children's rhyme
Very good and enjoyable. A few wee mistakes with some facts e.g Mary Paterson was murdered at Burke's brothers house at Gibbs close in the Canongate, and not at Tanners close. But really good storytelling.
Yeah Martin! Love your work!!
Excellent video!
Very well done...thank you.
I just read an article about these guys in a magazine all about history, it's a very interesting case showing how even a so called nobody can unfoil even the smartest criminals. Like the fact with them thinking no one would miss like James Wilson (Daft Jamie) who was well known and missed.
Ur brilliant at documentaries really enjoyed this one
I am learning about Burke and hare in school
I watch many documentary videos about serial killers; this story is the most ghoulish one.
Amazing. Thank you
Amazing content!
I love how you makes these.. they're so beautifull , yet macabre . 🕸
"Resurrectionist; A robber of literally the lowest sort. One who steals from Carrion Worms. One who steals from the grave and sells to the old Doctor that which the old Doctor provided the Undertaker." - Per Bierce's "Devil's Dictionary"
I'm actually planning to write an Audio Play series based on Burke & Hare. I'm literally here to do as much research as I can :)
Well done!
Came here from a Forensics lecture after learning about the form of asphyxia named after the story: burking :( :)
Sure is a nasty way to go!
My new favourite channel
I'm planning on writing a novel loosely based on Burke and Hare's crimes and found this quite informative. Thank you so much...and for any tales I'd like to see covered? Well, there's the Black Dinner that inspired GoT's Red Wedding along with Deacon Brodie that inspired RLS's famous tale Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Thanks Janey, best of luck with the novel! The Black Dinner is a great suggestion that I had not considered, actually! -Martin
thank you and good luck!
Extremely underrated
Thanks Banana, very kind - Calum
@@ghastlytales You're welcome, mate :)
Awesome to find .... Have been doing the Family History and Yes we are related ... WOW ! = William Hare ( Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather )
anyone interested in burke and hare should see the movie The Body Snatcher srarring Boris Karloff with Henry Daniell and Bela Lugosi and/or read the book its based on by Robert Louis Stevenson.......
He also took some inspiration from deacon Brodie for the novel Jekyll and Hyde. X
Haha! "Daft Jamie" even back then people where takin the piss!
Wow! That was cool.
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it. -Martin
What a fascinating story
Could the tiny handmade wooden carvings in coffins at the museum possibly the bodies of those murdered by Burke and Hare, to enable those murdered to come back in spirit to enact their revenge on the Hare couple and their accomplices?
The most stunning thing is that they found 19 carved wooden puppets in tiny wooden coffins at west-port. There is this rumour they are made by Burke out of guilt.. And that he carved the last two in his cell. That's why i was thinking about 19 victims. Like i mentioned before it's a rumour and i don't know if it's true , thus i'm not a scotsman. But i delightfull documentary
Hi Tom! That's for watching, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, we actually did a little mini-episode on the coffin dolls mystery a few years back: czcams.com/video/YapHxZXazwc/video.html
@@ghastlytales Cool , stay safe Greetz from Belgium
this crime was so popular there is a proper MEDICAL TERM use in forensic BURKKING (killing by smothering and mechanical ) asphyxiation.
do you have a podcast available? If not i would suggest it.I love podcasts and listen whenever possible.Just a idea.Cheers from Missoula,Montana.
Hi Tyrel! We do indeed have a podcast, although it's geared more towards our fiction narrations than documentary content or factual discussion. However, there are a few episodes of Mike's series "Real Horrors" on there, which I'm sure you will love if you liked this. Search for The Ghastly Tales Horror Show on iTunes or preferred podcasting service. And thanks for your support! Cheers, Martin.
Ghastly Tales awesome!I will definitely add your podcast to the list. Thanks for a quick reply.
✿◠‿◠)/ ♥ Giddy as a school girl to see this upload! Awesome quality and professional storytelling, Ghastly Tales!
Glad you enjoyed it, sleepyfacedangel. This episode has been a long time coming, we'll try not to let another whole year pass before the next one, haha! Cheers. -Martin.
excellent 😄
Cheers Kirsten!! 😀 -Martin
How about doing one of Mary's King's Close???
Hi Karen, I think its unlikely we will do another video about Edinburgh again any time soon (weve just done a new one on the Holyrood Coffin Dolls), but the close certainly is an interesting place. - Calum
How did Burke and hare took there dead bodies
Wonderful program.
His name was William Brodie.
This is an excellent documentary, and very helpful to me as I'm doing research for a novel involving body snatching. On that note, do you think you might make a similar episode about those who stole corpses from graves (students and professionals)? There are lots of macabre tales about their nighttime escapades. Author Suzie Lennox would be a good source of information on that - she has a blog where she posts such stories: britainsforgottenbodysnatchers.blogspot.co.uk/
Thanks, I'm glad you found it of interest! Yeah, there's definitely room for a full episode on the practice of body snatching itself. I probably won't do it for a while (for the third episode, I want to do something completely different in tone and era, one of Scotland's monster myths, perhaps), but this is a great suggestion and I will definitely keep it in mind. I had a look at that blog: fascinating stuff and a real wealth of information. Best of luck with the novel, and please let us know when it's done; I'd love to check it out. Cheers, Martin.
I have a movie about them with timothy Dalton and its really good im glad to find this story of them
So funny that there is now a gentlemans club right in the middle of Edinburgh named after these two men
Do a video about the guy who inspired Jekyll and Hyde! I've forgotten his name but he was Scottish.
You talkin about Robert Louis Stevenson? He was inspired by one of his drinking buddies Who poisoned his wife and liked to serve house guests poisoned cheese on toast.
Tacky, shame really, as it's such a fascinating subject.
Yes, unfortunatley their methods were indeed rather tacky ha! Glad you found it interesting. - Calum
If you are interested in Burke and Hare, you might like this short film! "The Resurrection Men": czcams.com/video/uHt0eIrwL0E/video.html
I want to start saying its a good work but i want to recommend you to use some spaces of silent
Cheers David, I think you're probably right. Thanks for watching! :) -Martin
Burke is my new hero. May his soul rest in peace.
Haha! He was certainly a hard-working, enterprising kinda guy. -Martin
If hell is real he is certainly burning in it, sicko.
Hero?? Wtf mate???
11:02 Bro, you look just like him lol. Must be one of your ancestors.
more on hare and wife
15:17 Burke looks a tiny bit like the presenter...……...
Both of them were BOOGERS! Sorry, but they were.
Burke is my ggggggrandfather
