I left Mormonism 14 years ago because Jesus came into my life directly, by passing the LDS Church with all its ordinances and hierarchy. He said to me, "I've taken care of everything," and I came out not long after that. There was no longer a reason for me to hide in the closet. It took me a long time to understand what those words mean, and I'm still learning, but that path led through some dark places... even into my own hell a few times. But every time, god called me back to the light. I'm out, a gay Christian. FREE! I don't know David personally, but I see a lot of the same turmoil hidden in his eyes that I felt. The world has god so ass-backwards. We don't have to BECOME something other than who we are in order for him to love and accept us. We accept him just as we are... he uses that openness to change and evolve us into what will make us most successful and loving and vibrant in the world. The only work is opening up to the experience. If we were all acting and living the same how is that useful to him? He is the master creative afterall. The fact that we are distinctly different individuals IS the point of life. Would you paint with one color? Would you create music with one chord? Of course not. The world of religion was crafted by men. Not god. We can't lose sight of that.
The truth is that the Church has not done anything wrong with policy. They are just upholding the laws of God. It’s everyone else who is trying to change the policies-blaming and projecting.
The LDS Church offers David two choices: Enter into a sham marriage with a woman he will never truly love in the way that she deserves to be loved (he's had three failed engagements) because it isn't in him to do that and it never will be, or live a life of solitude, denied the chance to experience love and comfort and companionship in an intimate relationship with another human being for no reason other than that someone else doesn't approve of who and how he loves. God says in Genesis that it is not good for Man to be alone. Should he be obligated to live alone, in violation of God's wishes? Why should he be denied the opportunity to experience that kind of love with another human being, simply because of who and how he loves?
The simple truth is that religion is completely fake, and the LDS version of religion is particularly fake. I hope you can make it out of the cult at some point in your life.

He simply challenges us not to feed it and trust Him, not our sinful nature. The same Paul the apostle called that "a thorn in the flesh", which Paul himself admitted to have. We all have tendencies that go against God's that eventually destroy us when we cherish them. We need to keep them asleep through prayer and faith.

I became aware of the world around me at an extremely young age of 22. I say this because so many people have never and will never have that awareness. I am sorry David at your age, you still do not have that awareness and you never will. There are three forces in this world, almost from the beginning of time, that are responsible for the deaths of billions (YES, billions) of people and animals. They are Religion, Culture and Ignorance. Unfortunately for the human race they will all be here on this planet until the very last human takes their last breath. I have lived my life since my early twenties mostly with my heart and sometimes with my brain. Nothing and no one has ever guided me except myself. I have had many ups and downs as most people have, but I have lived my life through being kind and compassionate as best I could. The fact that most of the world needs guidance from something or someone is a human need and I don't fault people for that need and their faith. For myself, I know there is nothing above or below and nothing beside me except myself and I have had a happy life with a much happiness and disappointment as anyone else. I have lost and I have loved and I know in my heart there is no God. So now as part of the forces that have killed so many billions through the years, it seems that our own country now will be challenged from yet another religious cult. There are thousands of them, but this particular one has taken a strong hold onto our lives. Religion, Culture and Ignorance has no boundaries in this beautiful world.
Yet atheism has created communism, which has killed millions and violated human rights in a short time if it’s existence. Yeah, tell us about ignorance again.

I think it's meant to be ironic not literal. In other words, he's saying that others judging him for who he might love shouldn't be the basis of whether or not he goes to Heaven, and if it is what's the point? God created all of us, and some people happen to love differently and that's all part of God's design. It's people, and the people in the church... organized religion... who demonize groups in order to hold onto their grip. "The other" is always a powerful way to weaponize faith.
