Mercedes W212 E350 DPF sensor replacement

- I was quoted £350 minimum for this job by a garage in Southampton. I got the replacement sensor on Amazon (delivered next day-garage could only get me in a week later) and within 15 mins it was fitted...no special tools needed, just a Torx T25/30 and 8mm/10mm socket.

My engine management light came on Sunday, it's got all the symptoms of a buggered sensor. Jut ordered mine & it will be here tomorrow. Mercedes quoted stupid money & can't get me in for a month !!! So glad i found your video, fitting it tomorrow night👍👍👍
I will be replacing my sensor this weekend and yours is the first video I have found showing the same engine as the E350 Convertible that I have. It looks a whole lot simpler than on some of the other videos I have seen where the sensor is hidden down the back of the engine below the DPF box which is also much harder to get to. Nice clear video, well voiced over, describing what I need to do. Thanks. I think I will check my air filters while I am there too! I will subscribe to see what else you are doing to yours. I have the coupe version but same engine and have just experience the limp mode, engine management light and error code very similar to yours 'the lower limit value of component B28/8 (differential pressure sensor(DPF) ) was dropped below/not reached'. You're video was very clear and precise and I will be doing the same this week. Fingers crossed it works as I only listed my car for sale last week! Thank you

First of all, thanks Topsy! I have been having a few issues with my W212 E350CDI. Symptoms; Gears shifting at higher RPM, no kickdown available, reduced power, limit on top speed and useable gears (think 6 out of 7 were available). Was able to drive on the motorway ok. Did a reset on the gearbox which cleared the drive issues but problem came back (no engine management lights). Plugged in a scanner and got the codes P2453/P2454/P07E8. I was just about to give up and take it to a garage until I found this video, thought the DPF might be shot. Just bought a Bosch Sensor from Amazon for about 30 quid. Will fit tomorrow and report back.
It does sound like a DPF sensor issue. Be sure to reset the number of regens using your scanner after replacing the sensor.

Part arrived from Amazon and fitted. Cleared the codes and reset the gearbox just incase. Piece of cake apart from the cobra clips that were a nightmare to refit, I only managed one and cable tied the other. Thanks again for this excellent video tutorial. 👍👍

I’ve a 2013 E350 CDI with the P2453 and P2454 codes. I’ve ordered a new genuine DPF sensor and hoping that fixes it. The wiring seems fine (some people report the wiring should also be replaced).
Car keeps going into limp mode. Only had the car for 2 months which is a pain.
Once you have replaced the sensor you should try to force a DPF Regen from your OBD2. The P2453 error is a voltage irregularity that may be either the wiring or a blocked (or full) DPF.
Fingers crossed it is just a faulty sensor.

Hi @Topsy's tech tips, great video with great detailed explanation of everything, I've seen far to many that just rush through & don't show enough detail so well done great job, I don't trust main dealer garage or many to be fair, I always try to do as much as I possibly can myself to all MB specs then I know the jods done right, I have a 2011 e350 estate 265 Amg sports, but can't find any videos to show how to check oil level digitally from inside using the multi function instrument panel, any chance you can put a video up for this please.

Hello. Thanks for the video. My car is w212 2011 model e350cdi 4matic. At 200000 kilometers. I have a fault with the code 148a00. I cannot solve the problem. DPF changed, injectors checked and there is no problem, differential pressure sensor has been changed. my problem still persists. my car has never produced black smoke, my exhausts are clean but my car is constantly trying to regenerate. I can't find the problem. why do you think it might be? (Sorry for bad english) thanks.
Hi there. Sorry for delay replying. The life of a DPF is actually limited and you can only do a regen a certain number of times and this is stored in the car's computer. If you fit a new DPF you must reset the computer (DPF Reset) to let it know to start counting the regens again from zero. if you have done a reset and it doesn't fix it then try doing it again as it often works the second time.

It gave me error code p2454 also p0030.
Goes to limp mode, I think it’s the DPF sensor, but for some reason it’s not the same one as the one you are showing in the video, mine says A0061539528, what do you think I should do?? Really appreciate your help
Hi. If yours is a 2012 model it may be BluTech rather than BlueEfficiency. The difference is the AdBlu that you need for the DPF. This requires a tank with a sensor for the fill level. When this causes problems often the solution is to change the tank as the sensor is integral. A total pain in the proverbial.
Error p2454 is actually a generic DPF error code though.
The error p0030 is related to an Oxygen sensor, normally accompanied by 'check engine' light on dashboard. That error code refers to #1 cylinder. Should be relatively simple to replace.
If the O2 sensor is not working properly you can get an incorrect fuel ratio in the engine, which can make it burn dirtier (hence clogging the DPF) and also give less efficiency. I would look at this first.
Change the O2 sensor, then force a DPF Regen to burn out the soot. See if that works.

I bought mine online. I know Amazon do them and eBay is also a good bet. My advice would be to get the Bosch one, but use Google to make sure you get the correct one for your car (Based on the number on the one fitted at the moment). On the 200CDI the sensor may not be where shown in the video as it is not a V6 engine.
You shouldn't need to reprogram it after just changing the sensor. It might need to run a Regen. If you change the whole DPF then you need to do the reset.
BTW. Sometimes that error code is caused by a soot blockage in the pipe going to the sensor and not a sensor error at all. If you disconnect the pipe and try to clear it first before buying a new sensor.
Hello! Ty for the video i had the p2454 code, i replace the sensor but still, the code comes back, when i shut the engine and re start no fault codes, but sometimes it re appears, dunno where i should look for
2454 is the generic DPF error code. If it is not the sensor it can be that the DPF is full of soot and needs a regen. Did you force a regen after replacing the sensor?

@@firotti Normally the sensor does not need coding. Is your car BlueEfficiency or BluTec? If BluTech it might be an error in the AdBlue tank gauge.

I have been looking for a couple days now and I cannot find the DPF differential pressure sensor on the OM642 engine either! There is barely anything on the OM642 online and virtually zero info for my vehicle 2009 Mercedes R320! Insanity!

I know that this is from 2 years ago, still I want to ask, I have the exact car, I replaced injectors, turbo, egr, and the second dpf, still smoke comes out and the smell is terrible, the car drives wonderfully, hope you can help🙏
Are you running Bio-diesel? This may not burn properly unless the compression of the engine is altered to match the different fuel density. This can also cause a stink too.
Also have a look at your economy. You should be getting about above 40mpg average per tank for a reasonably driven car of this age (50/50 town /motorway). If lower it may be worn or carbonised rings, cylinders or valves. These will also all lead to smoke and smell of unburnt diesel.
Good luck with the fix. These are the last of the non-adblu diesels and they cause so many problems I don't recommend them at all. Petrol/hybrid for the future.
I got P2463 error with the Autel Bluetooth thing, how can I check if it’s sensor fault or dpf it’s really clogged. Also can I force regen with this dongle?
Yeah. You should be able to force a regen, but you will have to do a good long drive to get up to temp properly also. Google the instructions for your dongle to find out for sure.

The second code that you are referring to is usually to do with the DEF. I assume you have a BluTec model not a BlueEfficiency. This can be caused by faulty sensor in the DEF tank, faulty DEF injectors or just incompatible DEF fluid (AdBlu).

I've got a 2011 E350 bluetec.
The adblue Def fluid for low. I filled it but a light came up saying 16 starts remaining. I took it to a shop when it got to 3 starts remaining.
The shop reset it and after, the remaining starts light came back on again after driving it 50 miles. I'm now back to 10 remaining starts.
I thought the NOX sensors may have been the cause because the mechanic told me the codes were pointing to the NOX & Mass Airflow sensors and that there was showing excess soot.
I spent $1,200 for 2 new NOX sensors. I also found a bad fuse thanks to a video from "Albanian Fix". The fuse replacement did improve the performance of the car. I don't think the $1,200 I spent on the NOX sensors did any good at all.
My big problem now is getting rid of the remaining starts countdown so that I am not left stranded.
Anyone have any suggestions or know of a way to reset the countdown without taking the car to the shop?
Any videos out there on this subject?

I'm really not sure as mine is the model before the AdBlue, but from what you have described there may be a fluid-level sensor in the AdBlue tank. If this is faulty it may read empty when the tank is full and if the car thinks you are out of AdBlue then it will limit the number of starts until you fill up. A garage can reset the reading but unless they fix the sensor it will just countdown the number of starts again...
Have a look on the AdBlue tank and see if you can see any wires coming out as it may even be just a faulty connection.

@@OakleyTurvey Thanks, I'll take a look at that. I thought that it might have something to do with that because the countdown issue never started until it got low on adblue. After I filled it the countdown should have reset. Nothing else triggered it.

@@TheRevivalChannel This seems to be a common issue with the AdBlue system. Looks like a major design flaw with some people getting sensors replaced up to 5 times when still within the 3 yr warranty from new.
NOx sensors are the mechanic's standard answer as a fix, but if that doesn't work they should look for something else...not just replace them again. There is a sonic sensor inside the AdBlue tank which may be the issue, but the tank comes as a single component at about £2K. Maybe try to get in touch with this guy. He claims to have done it as a DIY job in a weekend.

Sorry to hear this. Most garages charge way too much for labour, which is what puts the price up. If they see a nice, clean Merc driving in for a fix then you can be sure the quote will be 'gold plated' also. There are many honest garages out there, you just have to find them.
Just an update on my fix; I replaced the sensor nearly 18 months ago now and just gone over 190K miles. Still going well.

It doesn't always go straight into limp mode. Just like if you are low on oil, you get the warning light coming on. If you ignore it then it will go into limp mode. Good to fix before then.

Sorry. Bad analogy. I was just trying to say that the warning light usually comes on before going into limp mode. i.e. if you have an oil leak, the light will come on when the level has dropped a little. If you do nothing and the level continues to drop the eventually the car will go into limp mode.

Hi John, Sorry for any confusion. You will need to use Google to match the existing part number from your car, to the correct replacement. Some models have several compatible numbers (like mine) but you will need to check with what is fitted to your car. (Slight differences due to not only different models, but also when and where the car was built.)
