Great job on calling them out! We caught 60-70 blackfish the other day, non stop action. Not a keeper in the bunch but we had a lot of fun and the blacks got fat on the crabs they stole. I agree with you, I'll continue to throw those shorts back to help build and maintain a strong fishery.

Here in Oregon . if someone is caught poaching the state police will confiscate your equipment . They can and will take everything including your boat , vehicle . trailer etc. etc. Then you will receive a fine and possible jail sentence . Props to you sir for helping to keep the sport legit .
For every one caught-(hunting) something like 20-22 don't! You multiply that everywhere and can see how easily a species could get wiped out! What's the point if you don't have a challenge? I have a really good friend that's a game warden and I have literally had to ask him to clarify what he's telling me because it sounds that crazy! Some people really don't deserve the luxury the waters and our woods offer us!
DEC says don't confront them but call. Get as much info on them as you can physical description, boat name, registration #,etc. Something so they can track them down. Take pix of them. Just before the Black Fish season started I saw a few Asian guy's pulling them out and stacking them into a bucket. Then hiding that bucket into the bushes just in case. I was really annoyed by that. I think offenders like that if caught should be fined and banned from fishing for a certain amount of time. Unfortunately, especially nowadays it feels like we are living in a lawless country that protects and even encourages criminal behavior.
you should go on charters and call them out. they actually keep close- shorts and fillet them on the boat for their clients before they come back to shore, which is illegal... AND they catch THOUSANDS, i say that without exaggeration, THOUSANDS OF fish weekly; increasing the chances of catch and release trauma related deaths....even FURTHER decimating the already low fish population.
I saw a poacher at the Point Pleasant Inlet in NJ. He caught a short Blackfish, looked around and threw it into his 5 gallon bucket and sat on top of it so nobody would see. He didn't see me walking behind me I guess. I should have reported it, he's the reason people aren't catching keepers there anymore

I wish game wardens would patrol the cross bay bridge more often there are a lot of poachers on that bridge every year even now keeping small bass and tog. I see it all the time.

I saw people keeping everything at Green Island, no parking permits even. Tiny dogfish were left on the pier to die. One guy kept a hog nosed ray to take home and eat. I also see plenty of poaching at Short Beach all the time when the tide is low. No permits, raking in the clams.
In Miami poaching is horrible. You can visit a local pond or land based spot and people will bring trash bags or coolers and fill them with undersize or illegal fish to keep.
Expose those poachers man, pisses me off as well! Never kept a fish even a 1/4 short on my boat, have to tell my friends and family all the time that the rules are the rules.
The DFG sets a size limit for a good reason I am like you I speak up I wish everybody would do the same it is up to us that there aren't enough DFG officers to cover the massive water ways.
I am a pretty avid spear fisherman and there are a lot of different species that I won’t even try to Speare because obviously you can’t tell the size underwater with a lot of them
Idk if those are the same as the triple tail we catch here in Alabama/mobile bay gulf of Mexico but I've never seen ppl catching em like this. Around here we catch them with live shrimp around mile markers channel markers etc. Anything putting off shade. They're tough to find tho

The problem is there are very few DEC officers. By the time they come down there, the poachers are gone. It's unfortunate but most of the time they get away with it.
I called on a guy a few weeks ago. It took the DEC over 2 hours to get there! Luckily the guy was still there and got busted with over the limit, 3 of which were way short. The officer said he thought the guy was just oblivious. I said no, he knew exactly what he was doing. He was looking around before he put the shorts in his bag, and also this isn't the type of fishing that you go into without knowing anything. It's not like he's throwing a worm on a bobber, this is a short window of fishing where you're pulling fish from structure using crabs. If you know what to use and where, then you also know the regs. Theres another guy poaching at the same spot but once he catches his short he leaves, and DEC doesn't have the manpower for a stake-out so he will likely keep getting away with it.
