It broke my heart to hear Mimi relate just how lonely Donna felt one night toward the end. She says she was able to cradle her because she had gotten so small and weak. It reminded me of my mom dying of cancer. I couldn’t help crying.

I'm a big fan of Donna Summer and followed her career since day 1. I was devastated when she passed away and this documentary means a lot to us fans because we really need some closure as to what really happened to her specifically on the last few years of her life. Thank you so much Brooklyn for making this film and sharing what we all wanted. She sure did raise a fine woman and I'm so proud of what you became. I never heard the joke she made, but I heard about it and I never got the impression she meant anything derogatory about LGB. That energy never came from her. She just seemed to love people where they were, no matter what.

The winner of five Grammys now 6 total and six American Music Awards, the undisputed Queen of Disco was the first solo artist to achieve three consecutive #1 platinum albums. Bravo 👏🏼 but it's a shame same thing happened with The Rock and Roll Hall of fame 2013 a year after she died I cried because she was no longer with us! 😢💔 ONE LOVE to Donna Summer and her beautiful family

This is a great interview and it explains the gay rumor very well. To some extent, better than the documentary because here, she conveys it was intended as joke, but it was not received that way. I was about 14 years old when this started, but I didn't' care. I loved Donna and her music.
The fact that Brooklyn says what was being said about Donna was the antithesis of who Donna was makes sense. Donna was known to have a reputation of being all about love and loving others. Why would a person like that intentionally say something that would hurt a whole group of people? Well, religion. Religion can do that to a lot of people, but that was not the case with Donna. It's sad to know she died not getting over this controvery, knowing she hurt people unintentionally.
A lot of gay people believed she was coming from a place that most Christians come from on this issue and some of their hatred for Donna was, to me, overboard. The documentary showed that Act Up came to one of her art shows intending to destroy her art. That's hatred. It's not okay to intend to destroy someone's property just because they might disagree with something you're doing or how you're living. Donna came across more loving than those who turned on her. Yes, they thought she turned on them, but such hatred is not justified.
Donna was loving and forgiving. This is apparent not by just those who knew her, but also by some of Donna's interviews and words and her songs, of course.

I am so glad you brought up the "hate", because I am waiting, and have been waiting years for the gay community to acknowledge the "hate campaign" that Act Up (form in March 1987) went on to continuously disrupt her professional life. Not just by asking radio not to play her, picketing her concerts, disrupting Boston Pride 1989, and now finding out they were at her art shows. It was completely misguided and not what they were formed to do, so why was this campaign of hate continued for so long. They no doubt were behind the New York Magazine Story in 1991. I would like ppl to start acknowledging it, really. Thanks for the comment Jimmie, thumbs up.
When I first heard about that rumour or when it was printed as a fact, I couldn't believe it at all. I thought this kind of behavoiur or statetment is soooo untypical Donna - I could never imagine her being THIS way.
I loved The Documentary, I love Donna and her daughters. When I found out about those supposedly anti-gay comments I never believed it, it didn't affect my admiration for Donna. I have all her Cds, Vinyls, Cassetts, books and Videos. So far I have not felt that admiration for any other artist but Donna.
Donna told me that she would sometimes hear Bruce playing the piano, and she would stand by the open door and listen and cry bercvuiase what sjhe heard was so beautiful.
Bruce asked me what it was about donna's voice that made me love her so much. I told jhim there are some things she does vocally or sometimes its the tone of her voice that hits me in the center of my chest and resonnates and I can burst into tears. The human body is most made up of water, and vibrations affect water dramatically at times. Tjhat's what jher voice does to me. And, to my surprise, Bruice said, "Really? That happens to me too!" And I asked, when you listen to her singing around the house? And he said, Yes, sometimes he hears her singing around the house and he will stop and listen and it is so beautiful.
I wanted to ask him if he ever heard her singing in the house since she passed, but didn't feel it was appropriate.

Donna went into Casablanca Records one day, where she had an office, and someone told her, Your new record is going out today. She asked, What record? Casablanca was in debt and so Neil Bogart took the song On the Radio and attached it to a Greatest Hits record and they put it out there. Donna hadn't been asked or told about it until the day it was being released.
David Geffen wanted Donna on his label -- With her, he would have Donna Summer, John Lennon, and Elton John. John Lennon was murdered, and to start the company, he really needed Donna and Elton. So, Donna left Casablanca for Geffen. Casablanca also owed Donna a lot of money for the work she had already done, and when she left, Casablanca froze her money.
Casablanca was bought by Me3rcury Records. Donna was sued because her contract said she could not leaved Casablanca as long as Neil Bogart was still there. Well, Bogart was no longer there because it was now Mercury. The lawsuit was getting messy. So, Donna went to meet with Mercury without lawyers and she brokered a settlement with them. Donna offered to make one album for them and they would drop the lawsuit, release all her back royalties, and let her go. They agreed. She gave them She Works Hard for the Money album, and David Geffen was mad. He said she should have saved that song/record for them. But, that's what the creativity delivered and when... So, the rest is history.
When Donna told Giorgio Moroder that she was leaving Casablanca, he said that he wondered when she was going to leave. I guess Giorgio was aware of what was going on.

I really love Summer. She is the creme de la creme of original American music. She had a great career, so many hits, so much talent in those pipes.
What is really cool is that her vocal ability just improved with age, very, very rare. In 1999, the VH1 live show, her vocal strength displayed so much more depth.
The film was a lovely tribute to a groundbreaking artist ~ great job, kid.

I just can’t get over how beautiful Brooklyn is, inside as well. I was in my mid teens when I Feel Love came out. It hit me over the head like a ton of bricks. I became a Donna Summer FAN! Two years later, Bad Girls (her 3rd double album in a row!) I believe it is her best album and one of the best pop music albums in rock history. Great interview 👍💜

DS was an Icon when I was growing up, and now Legendary. Kudos and respect to her daughter for standing up and creating an inside view. DS represented something, many things, for me, for us. Hers was the first concert I ever went to in San Diego. We were riveted from beginning to end - 1978. When she sang Love is the Healer for Divas 2000 she blew the roof off! One of many times.
Donna was the only thing about disco that I ever liked. She was so confident and sure of herself. The clips from the Johnny Carson show are incredible. I continue to connect with her every day.
Donna Summer was a whole human being… not a 2 dimensional figure. I loved her then and now. So grateful that her daughters embraced her life and are sharing it with us all! Thank you!

Brooklyn you look beautiful you move your hands just like your mother. When you laugh you sound just like her
Donna was not judgmental about people. She liked to be around people who could make her laugh. I tried to make her laugh one time, and instead she shocked me and I turned bright red with embarrassment, but she turned on her heel and walked away as if to say, "I won that round". She was hysterical. Her sister Mary Ellen Gaines Bernard is also hilariously funny, and I love her dearly too.
I saw Donna right after she left Paul Jabara's house when he was dying. When I saw her, I immediately knew something was wrong, and she walked in, kissed me on the lips, and gave me a hug and then went in to put her things down. I asked her assistant walked in just as Donna entered the building, and I asked,d "What's wrong?" She told me about Paul Jabara, that they just came from there, and Donna went into Paul's bedroom alone and shut the door and was in there for a little over an hour. Her gay best friend/little brother. One time, I realized that Donna and I were alone, and she started to sing. All day, I kept myself in check, trying to treat her as a client and as a fun person to work with, until she began to sing. What she didn't know was, the moment she opened her mouth to sing, she transformed into DONNA SUMMER, my favorite singer who I adored and loved that voice! She saw my face, with my jwaw dropped to the floor, and she said, "Don't you know this song?" and I said, Yes.... sing it again. AND SHE DID! So, whenever I hear the Fleetwood Mac song DREAMS, I think of that time with Donna just she and I and she sang to me. When I sing Dreams, I sing it the way she sang it to me, and if I close my eyes and am really quiet, I can hear her singing it to me.
I just wanted to say this: Donna and Mary (I've met Linda, but don't know her well enough to say) are incredibly loving people. They are funny, they love God, and they love their gay friends and fans and everyone in between. There is no judgment there, only love. I have long been amazed at the simple truth of the gospel of Jesus, and here is this famous singer and her sister who figured it out and are doing it better than most. But, having spent time around Donna's Mom, Amanda's Maternal Grandmother, I believe I know where that incredible capacity to love came from. Mother Mary Gaines. She was such a beautiful, sweet soul, that you could see her spirit shining through her face. I protected her from a situation that, if she knew she caused the director to angrily say "CUT" and do a retake, she would have felt bad. Donna shot a look at the director that screamed, If it was my Mother, don't say a word, just move on... Mother Mary had to use the ladies room, and the floor creaked and it picked up on the sound. She asked me if she had done that, and I said, No. It was a cable or something on the other side of the room that got bumped, it wasn't you. I felt bad that i lied, but it was a kind and loving lie.
GREAT INTERVIEW! I've been her fan since I first saw her in Thank God It's Friday and still to this day. Great questions and I learned a lot. I subscribed and loved this video. FYI your not the only who cries to "Is There Music There". Brooklyn made a great documentary. I had to watch it several time because I cried through the first time seeing it. Bravo.
I've met Brooklyn and her dad what wonderful people. I feel so bad that Donna was a victim of child abuse by her pastor. I hope Donna was able to read Beauty for Ashes by Joyce Myer. I'm glad she had Stormie Omartian as a best friend who also suffered child abuse. I don't think Donna would be mean spirited to anyone. Donna sang her Gospel Music the best. I hope Brooklyn could do a Donna Summer Christian Music Compilation lp and ep with new EDM Remixes by top Djs. Thanks for this .

I had heard about her relationship with Peter Mulhdorfer, and about some shocking story, about the police and gun etc etc. I am not sure what was in the documentary, but I read something years ago about it, online but can't recall the article or site.

It was my understanding that, after she became popular, Donna gave her life to the Lord Jesus Christ, even hosting Bible studies and prayer groups with Bruce. I haven't seen the documentary. Is it referenced in it? I have yet to hear it from Brooklyn. Was Donna born-again?

People have a hard time understanding that everyone has a normal so to ask a kid what it means to have a superstar mother who is JUST their normal. FORTUNATELY unlike some Donna was able to be present as a family woman but just imagine & then so many dumb questions people wouldn't ask such as what was it like to have your mom as a mother? Duh she's my mom. Not saying that's being done here but it is done so much these POOR kids that are made to feel like they're in a shadow THEY ARE NOT... even tho Donna was stellar the kids of celebrities is never ....where they are unscathed in one capacity or another. 😉 Xxo
Donna told me something deeply personal in order to hel[p me. I promised her I would never tell anyone, and she said, "I know that, but that's not why I told you this..." This deeply personal thing was also not in her biography book that came out, where she signed my book, "Love, Mom". So, I burst into tears and had a rough time wrapping my head around that very personal thing being revealed in the documentary and interviews. I was shaken, but I kept telling myself, I'm sure she cleared all this with Bruce, she wouldn't just throw this out there without some family input... besides, the only question I asked Donna after she told me, was 'Does your whole family know" and she said that some knew and some did not know. And we never said another word about it to each other, but she checked in on my at every opportunity.
I'm not mad. It isn't my business or my place to be "mad". I was just taken by surprise and it was a big upheaval for me, personally, because it brought back so many memories - and I mean emotional and loving memories of my Mom, my sisters, and Donna. Without those three women, their love and their prayers, I don't know if I would have made it through that period in my life. So, the next time Donna saw me, she dragged me off into a private area and asked, "So, how are you?" My eyes began to well-up and she said, "No. No, don't cry. Tell me how you're doing." That's when I thanked her for helping me and credited her, Mom, and sisters for getting me through it, and Donna said, "I did something for you, now I need something from you". I said, "Anything. What do you need?" And she said, "A hug". While she held me, she said into my ear, "Scotty. I love you so much. Now, Carry on!" And then we both laughed at the "Carry On" part. I will always love her, and the world is a little less bright without her on it. But, my final words will be: "Don't be sad. For, tomorrow I shall hear Donna Summer sing Live and In Person once again." Not her hit songs from this life, of course, but something even more spectacular. Yes, she sings where she is, and her voice can bend the universe.
When Amanda was about 4 yeas old, she was having lunch with her dad, Bruce, and sister Amanda in the Hilton Hotel restaurant and my friend and I were seated right net to them. The girls were so adorable, hair brushed into a pony tail, both wearing blue dresses with yellow sweaters. Even though we were right there, with only the isle between us, I told my friend we should not interrupt a Dad and his girls having lunch. I just felt it would he disrespectul, and Bruce with his daughters... don't interrupt family time, is how I felt.
But, years later, I got to work with Donna on a couple of projects, and she was amazing and very kind and loving to me - and helped me through some things by offering support and by sharing a very person story. I also got to know Bruce who has also been wonderful to me over the years. I love those two people. I met Donna's Mom at a taping of a TV show where Donna was being interviewed. Mother Mary needed to use the ladies room, and she go up from the couch as quiet as possible. I was sitting next to her in a different chair and I heard nothing, but they said "CUT. WHO MADE THAT NOISE". As the director looks around, he sees Mother Mary standing, and then he looked at Donna. It was clear from that look from Donna - don't you dare say a word.... So, they got things prepped to go again and proceeded. But, right after the "CUT" - Mary grabbed my arm, and sjhe asked me if she had caused them, to stop, she wanted to know if she had made a noise.
I smiled at her and said, "No, you didn't make any noise at all. It was something over there -- pointing off to anywhere other than near us - someone bumped a cable or something. I also met Lou Sudano out at the Hidden Valley ranch as I was dropping off something for Donna and Lou came out to meet me. He was really nice. I liked him a lot because if you closed your eyes and listened to him talk he sounded a lot like my Dad who was also born and raised in Brooklyn, but to Scottish immigrant parents (with thick Scottish accents). I haven't told anyone what Lou talked about because I didn't think it was a topic that should be discussed with someone you just met; but there is something about a Brooklyn connection tjhat makes everyone feel at home. I also understood because he was so much like my Dad, so out of respect, I haven't told anyone.
Okay, one time Donna and I were alone in a studio waiting for someone, and she started to sing... She sang DREAMS by Fleetwood Mac to me! Just to me! If I close my eyes and I am quiet, I cam hear her singing it to me, and I can her the phrasing/styling, and the tone of her voice... it was a dream. Sometimes Donna would say she was my big sister, and other times she said she was my Mom.
She autographed her book to me by signing it, "Love Mom". So, I have proof, in her own handwriting, that Donna Summer is my Momn too. lol.
I will be 60-years old on August 12, and I am realizing just how young Donna still was when she left this earthly existence. She's not too far away for her family - she sees her children and grandchildren...
But, Donna also SINGS where she is-- it is her voice, without any defects or flaws, she has tjhe range sjhe jhad inj her prime. She does not sing her songs from her moral life, however, her voice is so powerful it can bend the universe.

donna said her suicide attempt in 1976 was due to a chemical imbalance but i think the pressure and harsh criticism directed at her played a huge part along with not having any support system nor anyone to identify with at the time.

I had known Donna Sommer (Summer) when I did not know anything about English music, so the first artist was Tina Charles, Michael J, Donna Sommer, Diana Rose, Peaches & Herb, and Berry White I had their wall posters all over my living room everybody walked in and they went like Wow ... I believe it was the year 1977 and still I listen to that music and miss a lot that era.
