I am a retired widow debt, mortgage and car free and live very comfortably on $27,000 a year. I walk to the grocery store and doctors, take the bus to shop at the other end of town once in a while. Friends give me a lift to church. I have a nine month of expenses emergency fund and invest extra money every month saving for when I need to go into a retirement home.

Although I'm female, I do not use a purse or wallet for money, only carrying sunglasses and ChapStick in one, if at all.
I got robbed once so carry my credit card and/or cash, just enough for that shopping trip in a runner's cuff, pocket or shoe. If my purse is snatched, oh well for the Dollar Tree purse and the Dollar Tree sunglasses and chapstick.
I also dress poor with no jewelry on purpose to avoid theft.
    Just saying.

I drive an old Toyota and live in a very old building for the same reason. Everyone in my building is on disability, working a very low wage job, or a college student. I'm the only professional. I carry an $8 backpack from Walmart. I thought about paying my rent several months in advance but I don't want my landlord to know I can afford to do that. No one in my building has ever been robbed because the assumption is that everyone is poor. I love the low rent of $550/month utilities included and I make sure my landlord knows that I'm very careful with my energy and water usage. My apartment sits empty and dark without heat/AC 50 hours a week while I'm at work. I only use the AC at night and on weekends. I'm on the third floor so I barely need more than the pilot light in the winter. He's only raised my rent $50 in the past five years.

My husband and I both grew up very poor. We decided early on we would live below our means and save for the hard times. I was constantly made fun of for paying off our house, driving an old paid off but nice car and not buying new clothes all the time. I brewed our coffee at home, packed our lunches and made meals at home each day. We choose to spend our time gardening in the summer verses traveling the world as many of our co workers did. However, today we are retired early. Those who constantly made fun of me are still working and will until they are asked to resign or die.

Can you imagine real people for friends....not text messaging friends....and free refill coffee for under a buck! We would share ideas for cooking...like your chicken sandwich. For example today i paid $400 for a like new 2400watt Yamaha gas generator that sat for 2 years with old gas in it and wouldn't start or run. I took it home and cleaned the fuel system out and it fired up 1st pull and functions like new. This generator was $1200 new in 2015 and is almost $1500 today. I will dust it off and post it on Facebook Market place for $750 and 2 weeks from know i will sell it for $675 . I will make $275 tax free profit. I do this on lawnmowers, generators, tillers, snowblowers some chainsaws and just about anything i know after 40+ years of doing this i will make money on. I spend about 10 hours a week doing this and make between $1000 - $1500 . I have about $1000 out at any time.

My brother totaled two cars in four months and was without transportation with a bad knee and hip so he can't ride a bike or walk too far. The nearest store is about 5 miles away. He now has Walmart deliver what he needs for $98 a year. That is way cheaper than auto insurance, car maintenance and everything associated with a car in CA. His other appointments are via Lyft but still comes no way near what he was paying.

They decided to do a round table discussion on what each person paid in mortgage interest and how much they still owed the bank. I was the lowest paid person at the table by A LOT and when I said I did not have an interest rate and owed nothing they were shocked. What surprised me most was the VP of finance shared how stupid that was because did I know how much I could made in the stock market. For two years, I rode my bike to the grocery store 2 miles up hill-ish, easy ride down hill home. I carried my groceries with a folding shopping cart ( the rectangular box kind w wheels) strapped to the back. I got called homeless crazy, people held their nose and called me names when I rode by. I was physically attacked and injured by a real homeless guy who thought I was poaching in his recycling collecting territory despite my groceries and the eggs he busted. People in cars threw things at me. It changed when I got pannier baskets instead and went more often. Yet people who just ride bikes in this town for the exercise are left alone. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I do miss the easy way of being fit and active with a purpose, but not the unmitigated abuse of a simple trip to the grocery store.

Living a frugal lifestyle to accummulate money to invest and build wealth does not mean a life without fun. It just means finding frugal ways to have fun. My spouse and I like to have a meal out occasionally, but frankly the meals we make at home often taste better and certainly cost a lot less. So yesterday, for lunch out as a treat we went to Pink Box, each chose a luxury doughnut and a bootle of milk and that was lunch for two for around $20. And this felt as luxurous to us as a steak and lobster meal at a fine restaurant. It is a matter of perspective and expectations.

It's very doable, at least where I live (Kettering, Ohio). A cop recently stopped me as I was walking in the big industrial park behind where I live, chatted me up and told me he really likes our "bedroom community," lol. It's definitely walkable. We do have a nice bike path system here in Ohio. I've got no desire to get back on a bike at my age (70) but occasionally walk on sections of it. I signed my old car over to my grandnephew almost two years ago, and it's actually been like a weight lifted. I can afford to buy a used car but just don't have any desire to. I love getting out and walking anyway and am very close to anything I need, including my doc, the post office, a CVS, a couple thrift stores, restaurants and a grocery store (though I mostly use the Kroger Boost program to have groceries delivered for free). We have a great RTA bus system here that I use often and actually enjoy it at $1 a ride. It's like being back in high school when we took the bus daily downtown to my high school but much improved with clean newer buses and AC, and the drivers are friendly. My brother and sister and their kids are close by. Funny, though, people tend to feel sorry for you or think you're nuts for not caring about having a car anymore.

In 2013 I looked at our yearly budget and started buying stocks that pay dividends and built our way up to what our yearly budget was at that time. Over time the dividend payouts have increased but we also reinvested each time they paid out. I have to say it has been such a blessing because I don't look at what the stock market does and if the stock price goes up or down either way the same dividend amount is paid out each quarter. I wished I was educated on dividends earlier in life but it has made a huge difference in our lives.

I live well without a car. :-) I walk or take the bus. I am retired, solo and new to this town, so I take courses to meet people. However, I chose to always take a course at the University of Third Age because the University has an agreement with the Society of Transport. By paying approximately 35$, it allows me to get a bus pass for the session without paying. So, normally, I would pay 40$ (fee for people over 65) X 4 months = 160$. Instead, I pay appr. 35$. At spring, I visited my sister who lives 187 km from me. I took an interurban bus service to reach her. In fall, I plan to visit my son who lives 249 km from me. I will take an interurban bus. When my sister or my son visits me, they offer to go with me if I want to buy things too big to transport in a bus. P.S. : I am French and not perfectly bilingual, so excuse my mistakes.

I would have trouble walking while carrying anything substantial, and I would fall off a bike because my balance is out. It takes me half an hour to walk a mile, and that is the furthest I can go from home while still being able to get back (after a rest). Fortunately I can buy most of the smaller things I need locally and have everything else delivered. If public utilities and services stopped functioning, however, I would be unable to cope.
I have been reading a Victorian novel about the collapse of English society after a disaster. I had not thought previously about the plagues of rats and mice and the packs of feral dogs and cats that would spread out of cities into rural areas in search of food and prey, let alone gangs of people planning to loot and occupy. I don’t think I would last long in those circumstances.

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. My finances would be TOTALLY different if I was single. My husband is the spender, and while he doesn't buy useless stuff, he's impatient and would rather finance than save up and pay cash. An entire paycheck of mine goes to such payments, and with the interest, we're not even making a dent in paying it down. A year ago we were debt free outside of our mortgage and now we live paycheck to paycheck. We buy the occasional precious metals as savings since I don't trust the economy. But man, the accumulation of those dumb little payments will get you everytime...

I never fell for the "I deserve" a new outfit attitude. My clothes were nice, clean and appropriate for the job. My boss told me each year she was giving a little extra raise so I could afford some new clothes. How did we turn into a machine of buying new clothes every week? Yes, some of my co workers had new outfits (blouse, pants/skirt and shoes) mailed to their house each and every week that were picked out by some person that knew their body shape and likes??

I'm a divorce attorney at a boutique firm. I go to the thrift store quarterly to get a "new" dress or blazer for court. I've even got a cute blazer at a garage sale and added some Wal-Mart pearl buttons to it. I'm a frugal 6 figure person. The craziest thing to me is the correlation between who makes the most and who spends the least money at lunch. I bring my lunch everyday or get the support staff's "scraps" when they buy $20 lunches. I shop at Aldi and bring leftovers or cheap fixings. Support staff buys lunch out everyday with door dash and Uber-eats.
But yeah as for the work clothes, no one really pays attention. I see old male attorneys in court very disheveled and wearing ripped khakis. One in a small county even shit his pants. The judge didn't say anything.

I do have internet on the iPhone and I do overspend on data. Bad me. No car, no microwave. The high interest savings account is only giving me 0.85% here in Canada, not even 1%. But I have 2 or 3 very minuscule guaranteed income certificate accounts with higher interest but they are locked in too . That money is gone forever to me . Have a lovely day .☀️

Agree that better money management when young is the most important thing to learn. But everybody’s list of their needs can be quite different from others. I now look for a ‘new’ purse at goodwill or consignment stores. I have found a couple that were very ‘lightly used’ for very little money. It is fun to set a low budget and to see what you can do with it.

Hmmmm....thinking about maybe a motorcycle but the way people have been driving since CONVID is insane. Can't chance it. I have to be here for my puppy. I do mow my own lawn and as a female I see the men riding around on ther tractors while I'm kicking a$$ on my push mower. Live a frugal life and am happy for it. I'm old enough to be your mom and I must say that you continue to be quite an inspiration. Keep it up and keep the faith in Jesus. I did talk to my internet company and did get it reduced by $12 per month. I also reduced my car insurance and reduced my cell phone bill. I could reduce more with my cell phone bill.
