I feel like most umpires couldn’t even give you an explanation of what a balk is. They’re just like “ yup, that looked weird, take your base”
Especially these two.
I’ve only ever called a balk on obvious balks. The whole stepping off the mound after being set is a new rule (as of a few years ago) and still doesn’t make sense to me.
On the second one it looked like he put his hands together and then released them before stepping off. That's my guess why they called that one.
His right leg flinched just before he stepped off.
@@nolansprojects2840 Oh, that IS the rule? That's the only thing I could figure out it could be and that totally didn't make sense to me. Personally, feels like a weird rule change, and I'm not liking it.
I was at that sumo event too. The image that will never get out of my mind was from the third place winner. When speaking with the in ring commentator, she asked him how he will celebrate? His answer included getting on his hotel bed naked and eating fried chicken. Dude was a 6'3" 370 pound Egyptian guy, who loves his food...

About the UAE tour crash: it was actually contact unrelated to the rider moving over that started the chaos at the finish. There's helicopter footage showing 2 riders making contact, and going down and taking a large part of the field with them. From what it looks like, someone dropping back from the sprint leadout clipped the wheel of someone moving up from behind, and that was it. You can't always rely on the footage from the front of the race, as telephoto lenses always flatten an image and make things look a lot closer than they actually are.

i mean, Sumo Worlds aren't so bad since the mat is level with the floor, actual Sumo would be scary since it's an elevated Ring and their isn't much separating the rikishi from the fans outside of a couple of the other wrestlers, one of the refs, and a bunch of old farts.
In traditional Japanese sumo it's considered good luck to have a rikishi fall on you!

Yes you can. Don’t know where the balk was nor did Jomboy explain. MLB pitchers have done this countless times and it is never called a balk. Coming set then stepping off directly after isn’t a problem at all.
Sumo is awesome! The March basho is coming up in a few weeks. Jomboy yiu need to watch Japanese sumo. Hoshoryu stares down his opponents before the match. You would enjoy the hell out of sumo. Smaller guys sometimes beating bigger guys is fun to watch.

yeah lol. Japan is the real world sumo championship, there are a lot of non Japanese wrestlers that try to move up the ranks
The Egyptian guy who won this event "Sand Storm" is a former top division wrestler in Japan, formerly known as Oosunaarashi. A disgraced (forced into retirement) former Japan pro because he had a hard time following their rather strict rules. He wasn't bad, but was never really a top guy in the division. He still looks strong after all these years though! But yeah this is no comparison to the real guys in Japan.
@@RussellBeattieThat exact thing happened though. There was a World Cup of American Football from 1999 to 2015, and Japan won the first two championships. The United States chose not to participate. Likewise I'm sure the World Championship of Sumo would gladly welcome Japan's greatest stars, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were turned down. They're still touring the world though, so it wouldn't make sense to call it the American Sumo Championship.

@adam_b9903 I don't see why the first balk was called...but the second time he failed to come set before stepping off. I've watched the first one over and over and can't see why the balk was called
He didn’t break his hands as he stepped off.
We had umpire during the week call a balk with no-one on, the batter had 3 balls on him and awarded the batter 1st base….. luckily common sense prevailed and he called the batter back but I agree balk calls are very subjective
@chrisbarker6797 that's wild...you can definitely balk with no runners on but that doesn't mean the batter gets first. I would've been watching the rest of the game from the lockerroom/stands if I were the coach lol

Culdesac = roundabout. Genuinely feel bad for that SJSU pitcher on that game-tying balk. Pitch clock and batter in the box rules hosed him more than anything. Not even sure the first balk the umpires could not explain was a balk at all.
Why were they balks? Looks like he stayed still and then removed back foot from the rubber in a way that was not gesturing towards a pitch?
Perhaps there is different rules for that level of baseball? Maybe disengaging from the rubber after you are set to start pitching is enough to be a balk. I don't know though. It was weird to me as well.
First one looks like a knee-buckle balk, he started to move the front knee (can't see it very well from this angle, but you can see his shin move) before stepping off.
Second one is a very simple start-stop balk, he brings his hands together, but doesn't continue his motion.

On the second one he didn't come to set and a complete stop (possibly this only matters on an actual pitch), and he separated his hands before stepping off (definitely a balk).
I couldn't see anything wrong with the first balk, but maybe he flinched more than it appeared from this angle, or maybe he moved his left foot in some way not visible to the camera. Or the umpire may have thought he turned his body back to second before stepping off.
I would love to hear the umpire's explanation though. Balk rules are weird.
@@SHSrunner09 No problem! Yeah, they are pretty difficult, particularly at the higher levels. I work mostly 16U and below, so stuff like that doesn't get called unless it is pretty bad, but watching training videos/analyzing pro balk calls can be really educational! CloseCallSports CZcams channel has some fanastic rule analysis videos that help too!

all those balks feel like a coaching problem to me - seems pretty clear that the pitcher doesn't know or understand when he is and is not allowed to step off the mound, and that's a coach's responsibility to make sure he does.

In the second sumo round, it looks to me like Bear's socked toe touches outside the ring a split second before the other guy's foot touches. I'd like to see a super slow replay from another angle on that one.
