The Rock-afire Explosion at Billy Bob's Wonderland

- On Aug. 2 some friends and I traveled to Barboursville, WV to see the Rock-afire Explosion at Billy Bob's Wonderland. I heard this was only one of three public places in the United States that still has a working RAE, and since it was only 2 hours away from my home, I had to take a road trip :)
Sadly, this RAE is barely functioning. Especially Rolfe and Earle, it almost made us cry when watching them... :(
I spoke with a lady who works there and she said since they don't make the RAE anymore, they can't order any new parts or have them repaired, so I guess they're just playing them out until the eventually die. They're not programmed very well, and they don't play many actual RAE cover songs.
However, it was still a treat to see them live after almost 20 years of thinking they didn't exist anymore, and we definitely had some laughs watching them.

It's funny how Mitzi's original mech abused the body lean movement quite a bit while the spare mech that's currently being used barely uses the body lean mechanism.

@@cecmidwest1581 Yeah, she got it back in 2019 since the original one would require welding to be fixed fully. Of course the current one has a handful of internal leaks causing movements to go out fast. Well they don't run her anymore since the center stage no longer gets aired up.
Why is that, if the programming signals are the same? How does one mech vary from another like that?

LMAO! I live in Barboursville and have went there soo many times since I was a baby and those things just make you crack up! I'm 20yrs old and me and my boyfriend and friends still go there to joke around. ALOT or corny memories!
Fun fact, the uploaders of this video made a blog that features more photos from this date and its nice to see the progression of the band from 2003 to now.

Good point, but keep in mind - this is in a small town in West Virginia and this entire place was pretty run down. I'm sure they don't have much money to do anything, but it's worth a shot. I might call and talk to a manager about it :)

No care for these animatronics.. It's like their actual characters have grown old and became really sad. :S Heard they've been fixed up....Wish I can find an update video somewhere. I hate seeing my favorite old Rolfe like that.
They've been fixed since this. They're fully-functional now and look a lot better, too.
sonicawesomeness That's great! :) It probably seems a bit silly having a favorite character as I've never actually seen them face to face (lame, I know) but I've seen a good video collection of them. its shows that r in this kind of quality that make me mad at the people that look after the animatronics. because the rock afire explosion is an iconic piece of American history. I really wish that I was alive when show biz pizza was in business.

This is the same set they played at Pistol Pete's Pizza here in Las Vegas. I remember them being in better condition though.. I wish there were some videos of them at Pistol Pete's.

Actually that setup came from another location of Billy Bob's Wonderland that closed as well, also the current location has a trailer at the back that also has the Rock Afire Explosion from another location that was closed down stored.
Pistol Pete’s Pizza should’ve keep their RAE stage current. Although, the masks, cosmetics and props have to be replaced with new ones due to being age, outdated and deteriorating.
I laughed at the "i know you're good, i know you're good, i know you're reall gooood ohhhh" park. I love them in ANY condition! :P

That's both disappointing and heartbreaking. If they can't take care of the show they should sell it to someone who will...and I know there's fans out there who would gladly put in the time and effort. Makes me cry to think of these guys just dying :(
Sad... I remember the Billy Bob's in Conyer's GA. I think it was in better shape than this, but also in a state of disrepair. Now it's completely gone. :(

They fixed them and there really working good.
Actually, last time I've been there, the workers say that they are able to order new parts, but it will take a couple weeks for them to order, so the RAE is currently out of order for a while. :(

What's really haunting is the way that the owner of Billy Bob's Wonderland acted towards Aaron Fechter the "creator of those animatronics" when he offered to repair them back in 2013.
I came late to this party so to speak, but you should contact this place and let them know they can indeed still contact Aaron Fechter at Creative Engineering and get whatever parts he still has available if they're willing to invest in the show. I'm sure he can help them out.

That can't be fully true. Most of the Munch's Make Believe Band are converted Rock-A-fire yet those are all functioning. At any rate, while they may not make the same parts as they did in the 80s, they certainly can be updated using new parts. Sadly, this would cost a lot of money and there isn't much demand for RAE, lol.

This is one of the few RAE's still around, and there aren't any new parts left, so I'm not sure what they are gonna do
They're surprisingly expensive, and only one of the original creators is still around doing all of this
