    Shall we talk for a moment about how weird the R Class is? Whoever is responsible probably doesn't work for Mercedes anymore. However, they are now very cheap as a used buy and they appear to be very practical. Let's see if they're any good.

    I’ve had one since 2007. Three trans Europe trips, each lasting a month, shipping a family of six. A flawed but awesome beast, outrageous comfort pace and storage. Expensive to run. Rare and special. I love mine . It’s never going to be sold, it’s just too good.

    Brilliant car. Mine is a 2007 R320 and it has been outstanding in the 5 years I’ve owned it. It has 200.000km on the clock and looks almost brand new inside. Cheap on fuel, pulls like a train an eats long stretches of road for breakfast. Build quality is outstanding, and it looks a bit odd witch i like. As long as you maintain it properly it’s not going to let you down. Only buy one that has been maintained according to the factory program. This car is like an S class wagon, comfortable as hell and can carry 4 adults and two children in comfort for long periods of time. If you want one, buy one!

    My dad bought a 2006 R320 Diesel back in 2012. As a 4 people family that thing was a dream and a doom. It was no doubt the most comfy car I sat in and as a family that drove from Germany to Croatia every year and to Macedonia sometimes (a 2000km drive) it was compared to the 2000 ML 320 or the 2013 C180 a real dream. You just sat in the middle row like a king. BUT that thing had some real issues at least for us. On a drive to Croatia the car went into limp mode. Waited for 8 hours for it to be fixed in the middle of Austria (I think it we paid around 3,5k for a EMS change) just for it to break down in Croatia again because of a particle filter. We did get a loan car paid by our insurance and the car was sent back to Germany to be fixed. Forward 3years and the Air-Matic had a compressor issue. Fixed it and sold it. But the Air-Matic has always been known to break down so it was a matter of time for that to happen.

    We have a 2007 R350 that we bought new. What you said is spot on, nobody really knows what it is, you won't see another one sitting next to you stopped at red light. No major issues and it now has nearly 200K miles. Quiet, comfortable and it will get up and go when I make it go. Perfect road trip car.

    My car service in Chicago used this car to transport us from O Hare to downtown . Since there were only 2 or 3 of us , plenty of room in the boot for bags. The ride and “ quiet “ was fantastic. Much better than a Suburban. The owner got great fuel efficiency. I really thought about buying one based on my experience. The problem was there were no used models available at an affordable price in the US. If I were in the UK would seriously consider a diesel with 100k that had been serviced.

    I'd definitely recommend one of these if it has the 3.5 petrol V6. That's the same engine as pretty much the rest of Mercedes lineup. The ML, E class, E class, C class. Apart from the balance shaft failing, there aren't many issues that I know of with those.

  • @smario2820
    @smario2820 Před 5 lety +16

    Damn Matt, you're getting better and better. I've now watched all your videos and am a fan, nice to see level headed reviews of normal, more attainable cars now and again, I also like the variety and quirky ones like R Class. This kind of mix appeals to all of us petrolheads who like to peruse AutoTrader regularly. I like your chilled approach just don't skip on the key technical points like power, torque (in lb/ft), 0-60 (not 0-62) and real world mpg. Generally, a bit of history of the model wound't go amiss and some general impressions of the steering, brakes and suspension that you feel are worth mentioning, maybe add in some "quirks and features" that stand out, we won't tell Doug De Muro if you don't... :-D You already have your own free-flowing style but establishing some sort of structure to relate to would be a good next step.
    As a side note:
    A cool idea that I thought would work on your channel is reviewing every generation of the 3 Series, could be built over time and labelled as a series, something like "The 3 Series Series" All generations of the 3 Series are compelling cars, E21, E30, E36, E46, E90, F30, G20 in all their variants, and what better excuse to experience them all. This would appeal to all from classic enthusiasts to those interested in cheapo used and even those who want more recent great value reliable motoring like the F30 variants.

    Thank you, a fair description of my car. This car is very special, ideal if you like to travel in comfort. Spain is a big country. (Bigger than what looks in maps). Very often, one says "I'll go from Seville to Valencia" And you calculate a few hours..!!!..
    Soon you discover that you need a car like this, since more often than not one needs to rest during your journey and nearly always you need to stay overnight in a hotel... Then one needs a car like this, very spacious to carry your suitcases, very spacious to travel with a couple of friends not necessarily having to be on top of each other. If you travel with your maid she/he can carry her/his things at the back, next to one's doggy and picnic case.. Etc... In summary, if you like to travel in style this is your car. Specially if you like living in style, instead of taking a flight from Seville to Valencia.
    Thank you Sir, I really enjoyed your video..

But yes it has a few issues that require some thousands to fix, but I don't mind spending a bit of money on it, because the way I see it is, when we decided we needed a 7 seater, we could have gone & got a 40-50K loan & bought a something newer like a CX9. But we bought the R320 for 16K. & it does exactly the same thing as a 50K new 7 seater can do. & it's also So much better than any other 7 seater in the same price range & age. So I don't mind spending some thousands on it to fix a few things.
      The main issues I've had is the Transfer Case chain stretched & tensioner broke, requiring a rebuild & repairs. The oil cooler in the valley of the V6 is leaking oil down out the back of the engine (looks like a rear main oil seal leaking, but its not), requires a big job to fix it, its not major, but annoying. & Drivers electric window button set needs replacement, buttons broken & come off. The expanding spare tyre is useless. Removed it & just use the best Slime flat tyre pump kit in case of a flat.

    The only thing I can think which rivals this is a Ssangyong Turismo (which also shares some Mercedes engineering), and is also rear or four wheel drive and is absolutely massive. It's a fascinating car, though. The only other one which slipped through the focus groups to this extent in such an unbelievable way in terms of what it actually supposed to be would be a Suzuki X-90. Try reviewing one of those!

Every thing else below uses the badge to hide behind on poorer quality and ride. My Mrs has a A class CD. She loves the colour and image. My S Class gearbox went at 65,000 miles shortly after I bought the car from a rouge trader (warranty? what warranty?) - but it was "just" some module at the bottom of the gearbox that was a well known fault, there are specialists on the net that can fix it for you but that involves taking it out, sending it to them and obviously putting it back. This would (to me) be a great idea to do at the same time as changing the fluid. However, along with many electrical gremlins that a new battery didn't fix I waved it on its merry way and eventually bought a Lexus LS430 and (touch wood) have had no issues whatsoever (I did get the cam belt done though for piece of mind)
