This is what I call straight up amazing. The generation I came from grew up on Helmet, Melvins, Quicksand, Faith No More, The Jesus Lizard, Tool, Chavez, Hum and Jawbox to name a few. We were some lucky bastards!!!!!
@@CaliBorn73 I was watching SNL when Fear played. I had no idea what was going on at the time, but I thought it was pretty funny when the audience started slam-dancing and the crew freaked out. Years later I ended up seeing Fear live. Minus the one that had OD'ed by that point.
MTV wasn't a broadcast network. it was a basic cable channel. There was a show on FX that had Melvins on at least one time back in the day. Conan might've had a band like Helmet on in the early days of his tenure at Late Night.
logged in just to reply to you. The snare sucks. Im kidding. the greatest snare on the world. When i bough BETTY and first popped the tape in my car stereo, i almost died when i heard the first snare note. it destroyed me. I was pulverized into a pulp. My ears wanted to buttfuck the tape and cum all over its sweet bass. Can you sense im emotional right now?
Take me back to my job driving a hi-lo at a lumber yard, waking up with no pain or thoughts of dispair. 1994!!!!! I was 20. My dad died when I was 18 but I remember this as some of the best time of my life. Turning 50 in January of 2024. What the fuuuck!!!
Holy shit i thought id never see this iconic live performance again by helmet on jon steward show!!! I was 13yo when i saw this on tv..drove me nuts, inspired me to pick up drumming and skateboarding aggressively. Everybody else was skateboarding blasting Nirvana- Nevermind, well me and my buds were blasting Helmet-Betty while grinding pipes!! Yeahhh i bow down to HELMET still now!!
This still sounds raw , fresh, heavy and energetic and it’s standing high and proving itself it’s power even after it’s been almost 30 years since it’s released
Respect to the man Henry Bogdan I always come back to this show because his bass playing is top tier, so simple but so full, Bogdan and Stanier make such a tight rhythm section
I remember seeing Page in a Guitar World magazine back in the day saying, " I'm just a guy out there proving that you don't have to be a good guitarist to have a great rock and roll band". I still get a good laugh every time I remember that. They have got to be the most "clean cut" looking metal band ever. 🙂
i keep watching this over.... hoping to God that the part in Milquetoast that gives me eargasms (where the show cuts off) would miraculously extend..... but this shall never happen :-(
Helmet was a major step in hardcore evolution. No one has come close since. Bad Religion Suffer era was equally insane. Stanier is the greatest of all time.
My first concert ever in 1996 was Helmet opening for Primus. Fucking awesome! I was instantly hooked on live shows. I remember this drummer killing it while wearing an Emmitt Smith jersey.
Mine was around 96. I would get the 12 Columbia House CDs and never pay them. I did it about 3 times, getting CDs sent to different family members homes.
Can't believe I actually remember seeing this on TV the night that it aired, such a better and more enjoyable time. Always loved this Band since 1992, when I first saw the video for Unsung on Headbangers Ball one late ass Saturday night. Page still had a full head of hair back then (during this performance in 94)...and so did I...🤔.
To answer your question, yes ... these guys really are this badass live. But even better because this just doesn't do it justice. Great video none the less!
Never heard of these guys until I saw them open for Clutch this last year. Unfortunately, the sound was absolutely mud, but it intrigued me enough to research them more when I got home. These guys absolutely rock. I really hope I get an opportunity to see them again with a better mix
Our youth desperately needs to express themselves through a wider variety of music. Like we did in the 80's and 90's. Helmet gave us that outlet and independence.
After all these years and listening countless times to Betty, I've finally seen the band live. And let me tell you, i imagined the singer to be, well, not like this. Now i like their music even more!
Don't know how I've never seen this before, but it came up in my suggestions 3 days ago and I've probably watched it 10 times. Meantime and Betty are 2 of my favorite albums. Helmet get's down!
I remember blasting Meantime in my first car on cassette. It was a convertible, so it was heard. Older guy yelled at me to turn it down, so I turned it up. Good times.
Bogdan and Stanier. Best rhythm section of the 90s.
I agree 100%. Second place in my opinion Bordin and Gould from Faith No More
Blaster Seal You two lads and I should all head for a pint. I think we’d get on well! 👌🏻
I would include Rob too, rhythm guitar & all.
Solid as concrete, juicy as a watermelon, fabulous drum and bass combination.
Panzerhead Rob was a great replacement
"If you, like, saw these guys on the street, you wouldn't even know they were cool." - Butthead while watching "Unsung"
I am still obsessed with Helmet after all these years.
Rebecca Broughton You have good taste in music. Most of their catalog, still holds up here in 2018.
Same
@@biscuitsforsmut2791 you have great taste too.baby. Keep on rocking to Helmet too.
same here
Try to catch them live. Absolutely recommended.
This is what I call straight up amazing. The generation I came from grew up on Helmet, Melvins, Quicksand, Faith No More, The Jesus Lizard, Tool, Chavez, Hum and Jawbox to name a few. We were some lucky bastards!!!!!
@lonewizzard no clutch,COC, filter, Primus, chevelle, snot or deftones?
Kickass!
@@josephgarcia3912 Kickass!
@Cynthia May Kickass!
Super Chunk!
That bass during Milquetoast is fucking life
+Evin Paauwe so fat :D
Those mesa 400+'s are a fat sounding amp. Not thin at all with that G&L 2000 either! One of the best bass tones of the 90's!
He plays low, between the pickups and bridge, as opposed to just playing over the pickups.
Henry Bogdan's monster bass sound is seriously epic.
That G&L through that 400+ has some serious punch!
I still play an L-2000 because of Henry. Just great tone and Henry's picking technique is top notch
Kim Scott from The Mark of Cain also.
John Stanier's drumming in Helmet still gives me a musical hardon.
💯💯💯
Stewart was always fearless about his musical guests. Who else let Helmet play on network TV?
i used to record the bands that played on the Jon Stewart show on VHS lol
@@mikedlc9766 He loved Helmet
I can still remember Jon having Bad Religion on and them playing Fuck Armageddon, completely unedited to close the show.
@@CaliBorn73 I was watching SNL when Fear played. I had no idea what was going on at the time, but I thought it was pretty funny when the audience started slam-dancing and the crew freaked out. Years later I ended up seeing Fear live. Minus the one that had OD'ed by that point.

most underated band ever
Stephan Collor Fuck yeah they are.
that snare.

soothdoom
in addition to the snare, definitely love your attitude.
The drummer in one of the bands I was in back in the 90s tried for years to find a snare that sounded like that. Mission: Failed.
listen to 'troublegum' by therapy?
Dave A. of Pearl Jam was a beast. He should have never been let go. and VS is my fav. PJ album - great drum sound.
I can't hear milquetoast without seeing Brandon Lee as Eric Draven kicking ass.....
Musical tastes may come and go, but great riffs will live forever.
Agreed! This was a little before my time but man I seriously LOVE! this band. It sounds like it could be released today in 2022.
Damn they cut it off at the best part in Milquetoast
Ikr 😂
damn
Where is the outrage? ugh
@@waveshadowmusic I was ready to headbang :'(
Right!!!
Ngl but Henry's bass fat-ass tone is one of the best I ever heard in my entire life so far.
I didn't know Bryan Cranston was in a band! Lol. Loooooove Helmet!!!
The way they all bop in unison is very cool.
Gotta be your own metronome!
I wish people would start playing good music like this again
narrow head and bleed
Page and Rob were an iconic duo even tho it was so short lived
Take me back to my job driving a hi-lo at a lumber yard, waking up with no pain or thoughts of dispair. 1994!!!!! I was 20. My dad died when I was 18 but I remember this as some of the best time of my life. Turning 50 in January of 2024. What the fuuuck!!!
I’m 17 and just finding out ab this band bruh I wish I lived back when this shit was at least kinda poppin. These guys go hard af
Saw HELMET live 3x in their heyday 95 96 97...all great shows! Enjoy!
They were awesome times and nobody said “bruh”.
@@KeironP1 ugh those were the days man
Bruh...
Bruuuughhhhh
Old Helmet stuff rocks !!!!
The drummer and bass player were in absolute perfect sync. That's the real secret to having a badass sounding band.
Truth
They still sound as fresh today as much as this recording back then.
YOU have to hand it to John Stewart....he had some damn good acts on his show....!
Yes we were. Really, we witnessed the last great generation of rock.
Aragon Ballroom, August 1994, Sausage, Helmet, Rollins Band...great concert!
i saw the same lineup at The Commodore in Vancouver. Absolute killer show
Same tour at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in LA...epic show
Whoa!!! 😳 🤯
"GroOove!" (Third "O" is for extra groove!)
Super duper groove show

I love how Page actually uses fx on his voice to recreate the album
THIS... Never understand why more bands didn't do this
rip the sick outro
Man, that line up.
these guys had the best fucking tones. bass, guitars, even drums.
This still sounds raw , fresh, heavy and energetic and it’s standing high and proving itself it’s power even after it’s been almost 30 years since it’s released
I always thought their entire look and sound at that time helped them stand out from what was popular at the time: grunge.
Dudd there riffs fuck hit like a 2 ton hammer still feel the energy years later
Hey. I made that bass. G&L L-2000 model. Wow. He played the shit outta it! Good for him.
miserysphere 666
Holy shit! Really??!!!
What do you mean you made it? Was it a parts bass or were you working in G&L?
Isit just me or does page look a bit like Hal from Malcolm In The Middle
jdugmar holy shit, a hum fan in the comment section of a Helmet video. You sir are beautiful !
Halmet.
He looks like Bryan Cranston & Harvey Keitel had a kid
I can see it
Daniel Tosh always reminds me of a younger version of Page. I'm probably the only one who thinks that.
Stainier is the fucken man \m/
Just saw Helmet and Filter last night. Amazing show! Filter was mind blowing. Love my Helmet!
Superb. First heard Helmet from the Crow soundtrack in the mid 90s. Love it
Respect to the man Henry Bogdan I always come back to this show because his bass playing is top tier, so simple but so full, Bogdan and Stanier make such a tight rhythm section
Helmet, I had every CD.. This performance is heavy, that guitar tone, riffs, bass and drums amazing band

I can't help but think of pat smear every time I see John stanier in this video
I kinda think of Private Pyle from Full Metal Jacket, because of his face
The lovechild of pat smear and slim shady
Tightest band of all time. Stanier was incredible.
Phenomenal
i keep watching this over.... hoping to God that the part in Milquetoast that gives me eargasms (where the show cuts off) would miraculously extend..... but this shall never happen :-(
The end of the song when the bass goes from the D to the D# hits so fucking hard and it's killing me that it cuts off there.
they sound awesome live! I also like they're movement onstage. they're in the pocket and it show's!
Helmet was a major step in hardcore evolution. No one has come close since. Bad Religion Suffer era was equally insane. Stanier is the greatest of all time.
Rob Echeverria (Rhythm Guitarist) deserves to be given credit and appreciation for giving the Rhythm Section an extra layer of badassery.
The singer looks like Bryan Cranston. Always loved this song,
I would love a HELMET reunion
Paul Wolfe I think they had one.
They are coming to Los Angeles with Korn , faith no more and system of a down
@@ramonw9430 with their original rhythm guitarist but not John or Henry

If this was in Dallas, I think it's the same one I went to. Both Primus and Helmet kicked ass.
I was child of the 90s helmet was my favorite meantime was my first helmet record that was in 1992

I love the guitar color
2021 found Helmet when I read Mike Patton was going to watch them recently. Wicked sounds
Now that's a wall off sound!
Its great but I cant hear much of a Phil Spector influence here.
Hell, they cut the best part of the song. I wish there was a version without the final cut
So grateful I was a teenager in the 90s. Today sucks.
I remember playing this song at my work, ,30years ago. Everyone was head banging
The grooviest band ever man
I am involved in the making of a band. Helmet is our main influence
what else?
vaultsuit Tool, queens of the stone age, pantera, and some of incubus like anna molly.

Kickass, got to see these guys at Peabody's down under in Cleveland...totally blew me away, it was kickass live.
Helmet has always been a favourite. Still sounds great and groovy.
Pure true sound.
