  • In June, AP Group announced the closure of its Aspen Planers mill in the small town.
The closure joins Canfor’s closure of a sawmill in Bear Lake, a production line in Prince George and the suspension of an investment in Houston announced in May.
Bruce Rose, with AP Group, sat down with NowMedia to discuss the impacts of the closure and what he thinks needs to be done to fix the problems facing BC’s forestry sector.\

Just looking at the riding maps. The cities are ignorant of what is going on outside of their concrete and pavement. And that is where the NDP are based. The NDP are actively giving away what is not in their political jurisdiction.

Driving through central Alberta Hinton, Edson, Drayton, etc. all have pulp or sawmills forestry is a big employer out there. Alberta's premier spoke recently about having the most competitive tax structure in Canada. She was critical about Ottawa's taxes, both on companies, and on carbon tax. There's homes for 1/2 price. Healthcare jobs, oil & gas, all kinds of construction jobs. I don't know why BC has chosen the path it has.

As an Albertan who voted for Danielle Smith, I would now say I don't trust her at all. She was only EVER the lesser of all evils I'm afraid. Bad things are brewing in Alberta, much as they are all across the country. You mentioned good areas though.

It is because the NDP minister now works for the UK power companies that burn those pellets, it used to be. They only took the tops then they were allowed the beetle kill Then eventually they were given blocks and block’s slated for bio mass. Canada has sold out Canadians and this is only one instance…… UK don’t burn dirty coal anymore, they are burning less dense less efficient pellets, bigger carbon footprint…..that’s good right, no carbon tax. I think you should get some more facts about why saw mills shut down.If they cannot get timber because of environmentalists, native concerns and government delays the mills cannot make money they have to shut down.Ask Canfor and West fraser why are they shutting down.
I worked in this industry for 50 years I follow what is and has happened. My home Vancouver Island has a whole log export problem.15 big mills shut down.Share holders are the only people that win now.Communities have died Gold River ,Thasis, Youbou and many others.
The BC forest service cannot do anything without the natives okaying the plan. Why do we have a forestry division or B.C. government the natives call all the shots now.
