I kinda feel a lot of these quick grocery delivery businesses are kind of unsustainable. Way too many of these quick delivery unicorns are popping up lately and they are doing the same thing done by already existing apps. I feel like many customers are using their service only because they are giving hefty discounts and other offers, Once that period stops customers will jump onto the next quick delivery unicorn.
On top of that even DMart has started their pickup point stores/dark stores in many cities and their own delivery service as well.

You are right. We are buying online grocery only because of discount. India can't be compare with America. We always have some retired people in family who can buy grocery always from store. Also Indian eats good and fresh food so we also don't believe online vegetables. These kind of startups sustainable only in 3-4 metro cities like benglore, Mumbai etc where people are mostly working and away from family. So right now dmart and reliance are only real player in this segment.

Another interesting thing. A blinkit dark store is at a distance of a minutes walk from my house, and it was being widely used in my locality, till a month ago. However, it has now started charging Rs 25 for delivery, which is not practical especially when the distance is less than a hundred meters (the delivery guy walks to our home for delivery). It has discouraged locals to order, since the total price of ordering a packet of Tata salt nearly doubles. They really need to sort out the problem of standard delivery charges for all distances

    • @xenonplays191
      @xenonplays191 Před rokem +1

Agree when you talk about the margins. However a lot of the products they stock up, they cut down of a lot more distribution levels thereby getting it at a little cheaper rate compared to a local shop. Coming to 10 minute delivery, whether it is 10 mins or 30 mins it doesn't really matter. Even if it is 45 mins, people would be okay with that. I do prefer local shops because of trust and assurance. However to your statement, the unit economics at scale do fit in at an overall level. The secret lies in quick processing and packing of orders. Automation of the supply chain and low cost dark stores thereby reducing the overheads. Apart from these, there are companies who pay us (zepto, dunzo) to promote their products on top. I remember a year back, Epigamia paid us when they launched their milk shake. Even companies like Cadbury pay for showing Cadbury products on top during festivals. For the Rakshabandhan, Cadbury is running campaigns on both Zepto and Dunzo

According to Research, 19 workers are sufficient to pack 18000 orders (18000 = 18.75 employees x 32 packages packed per day x 30 days). My view on quick commerce :
    1. Dunzo and Zepto-like companies are starting to deliver in 10 minutes, just to get your attraction. It's a marketing gimmick, to acquire more market share - once they have enough market share they surely will going to drop the 10-minute delivery. I mean they still going to deliver fast but no promises.
    2. Reliance Jio or Dmart can still compete very easily by partnering with normal stores and turning them into Smart stores, Jio started doing this in Pune, I have seen many stores named "Jio Smart Kirana" and when we order they still deliver in 10-15 minutes from Smart stores.
In the future, I think it's going to be like Dark stores vs Smart Kirana stores.
I am more in favour of #2 because of several reasons,
    - they are not disturbing the ecosystem at large length.
    - it will help Kirana stores in empowering their stores, for example - it can have better quality because jio is promising better quality to customers, it will going to be cleaner and better

Quick commerce can't survive as long as there are Kirana stores in every locality. Given the lack of awareness right now, Kirana stores might not be hyper focused towards their customers. But sooner or later they'll get the hint and start serving their customers more conveniently with just a phone call away. Food delivery services are profitable as they tend to increase the business of local restaurants/hotels which is not the case in quick commerce.
It doesn't make sense that I order something from a Dark Store which is located at a distance of 4 KM on avg from my house whereas I have a Kirana store within 1-2 KMs. Added to it, if I don't get all the required items of specific brand, quantity, or price, I would never proceed with placing the order.

I work in Blinkit as a customer support executive and to be honest the only reason why this company is making loss is that people raise false claims of missing items, damaged item and quality issues. Even there are many new customers who comes just to get that initial 75 rupees cash back and in that order too, they raise a false complaint and takes a refund deliberately. Offline stores could be a profitable business but in online mode, customers will never let the company come out of its losses. I don't know if only we indians are like this. But it feels so bad to see when people cheats like this. They deserves kirana stores only. One day Blinkit, big basket, zepto, dunzo, and many other companies will close their operations and many people will loose their jobs and people will have to go to kirana stores again. Groceries business is not a profitable business at all.

I had the Same thought of how such a business model will work in India with a literally infinite number of Kirana shops in India. If this turns out profitable even to the middle class people it will for sure be a miracle and a too good business strategy and market penetration

I live in a small town 20km away from the main city (Kolkata). We have stores like, more. , Spencers, Reliance Fresh and Big Bazaar in and around our locality. Services like Big Basket and Groffers are also available. But still most of the people prefer to make any purchase from their local kirana stores. The local stores aren't even providing any home delivery service, or any convenience like the Q Commerce companies . But still people prefer them over these services. The adoption of technology is slower in India as we have much less urban population and much much more people are living in Tier 2 & 3 cities and rural areas. So, the market is small for Q Commerce in our country. Another thing is people from my father's generation love to go for shopping on a regular basis, they like to go out and buy vegetables and groceries by themselves, it's like a fun activity for them as they can meet people and socialise this way.

Many of us have a connection with such service providers which we do not want to cut off. From urban Indian perspective, it looks promising but the catch is that these businesses have a fundamental flaw in their model and that is this won't serve a big customer base outside of some urban pockets. Already high bloated inflation is around and no one except for 0.00001% people in India are willing to pay for extra logistics costs which otherwise could be compensated
I have seen the overcrowded streets outside of DMart on weekends and this perfectly justifies that this model will break after max ~5 years till the time they can burn cash

At the same time we must not forget the fate met by Giant BigBazaar inspite of having 2 decades legacy . It's management miscalculated aggressiveness of expanding business on debt , impractical takeovers of small players in the quest of retaining supremacy in the retail sector reduce it to ashes from being a supreme player @ retail industry...

Blinkit charges Rs. 9 for delivery per order.
I think this delivery charge pushes the customer to increase the value of order.
For example if a person wants to purchase goods worth Rs. 100, the delivery charge would be 9 percent of the entire order value.
So, the customer would buy multiple items together because psychologically our mind sees the delivery charge as the percentage of the order value.
So if I order for Rs. 1000 instead of 100, the delivery charge would only be 0.9 percent.
    Thoughts?

They doesn't have as much cash to burn as giants like d Mart and reliance has.........when a particular market gets crowded with various start ups ..two things definitely happen.
