I love that Sherlock had enough time to make a flipbook out of the fake ledger, just to cheekily rub it in Moriarty's face that much more ^^
With a pun no less
He did it mainly so that Moriarty wouldn' notice anything, until it was too late (here on the balcony)
With a pun that could indicate he knew how Moriarty would hurt hum and answers the question Moriarty posed about who is the fisherman.... that is some insane amount of foresight.
Would be funny if Moriarty flipped from front to back, instead of the other way around. lol
Holmes referenced this when they first met ... Schubert ... This fish you cannot cheat.
Chess is more devastating if you announce your moves in a dramatic tone of voice.
And also, without moving the pieces! 🧠

"The most formidable criminal mind in all of Europe got his money stolen by perhaps the most inept inspector in the history of Scotland Yard". The burn in this sentence is too much for Moriarty to take in.
Just now got to know the meaning of formidable and inept that made me empathise for our Professor .
@@GuruPrasad-tb3qkImagine the praise and citations etc Lestrade would be getting for this grand slam action.
A small thing but the fact that he trusted Mary enough with Moriarty’s book- with the cypher key- and with ensuring that Lestrade got things done, it just goes to show how much he really values her.
Indeed, the moment she goes from "obstacle to spending time with Watson" to "valuable ally", it's pretty decently subtle character development.
That part was actually for the Holmes' chick. But since the actress wanted to quit and they since killed her off. The position went to the only person Holmes could trust besides watson, even if they still didnt have his respect.

0:29 Moriarty is blinking, people will blink like that, when they are trying to remember something.
0:35 Moriarty realize that book is still there, and that Holmes is likely bluffing and trying to win more time, so he smile and continue to play Game of Shadows.
0:52 Moriarty can see that Holmes bluff is good and admires it.
1:18 Moriarty just realize that this was not a bluff and Holmes trully did something and now he takes his words with great caution.
1:30 Moriarty just realize the horror of the situation and what Holmes done.
1:42 he is in panick but trying to stay in composure, yet checking if this really happened.
2:23 he lost the Game of Shadows and there is no way he can admit it.
Such a great scene.
2:23 feels more like "Oh, why hello person I am officially going to try and murder."
Andrew's Moriarty felt like unhinged lunatic and not intelligent at all who had a weird attraction towards Sherlock, But the Jared Harris version was a proper criminal mastermind bent on world domination. He made it personal only because Holmes we interfering in his grand plan not because he had some attraction issues towards Sherlock.
@@JohnDoe-zj6xf you're right. Imo this interpretation of Moriarty is lot better then the one in tv show.
@@ethanhorn6093 probably the first time Moriarty wanted to discard civilities and just straight up strangle someone to death😂

He tried to plaster on a smile, but he was so earth shattering mad it died before Holmes even turned back around.
@@SunGawdRa I think it was the added insult of Holmes declaring victory in the chess game that killed the smile.

That analogy was for Irene Adler who was scarified early into the game.. it was her death that led Holmes to discover incriminating evidence against the Prof and with it, an avenue to shut down his shop. i so love jared harris' reaction/expression at 2:29, such great detailed acting right there
His mask of sanity slips and you see the psychopathic monster underneath with that look of pure malice and rage. However he regains his cool and covers it with a carefree smile to not give Sherlock the satisfaction.
Harris’ acting is beyond amazing here
"Haha good one old boy... You die now"
BBC Sherlock version of Moriarty played by Andrew Scott is a joke compared to what Harris shows in scene like this. Much more menacing character and better actor.
So in summary, Moriarty lost because of three basic reason:
1. He underestimated Holmes - his judgement severely affected by the complacency that had set in after dealing with average people 99% of the time.
2. His aforementioned complacency also brought about over-confidence - pride blinded him from second-guessing his calculations regarding the degree of time and resources Holmes had invested in his crusade.
3. Instead of using a Mind-Palace, he used a notepad to keep tracks of his shadow business enterprises. While his practice of maintaining his ledger in public may have fooled ordinary law enforcement - he also forgot he was dealing with Holmes.
Biggest one is he has underestimated...
This is the best Moriarty version after all... I love their rivalry
4. he forgot to water his plants
@@scottmatheson3346 😂
If at least he used Nord VPN to cover his..... Oh wait, this is the 1800s so no. Not possible
4. He missed mate in 1
The best part of this is that Holmes made that little fish flipbook before he was captured and tortured on that meathook, which means he was basing everything off of that first interaction they had when that song was playing in his office.
It also clearly tells Mortiarty that Holmes deliberately got himself captured.

Me too
Majid Qureshi it’s in the title of the video, Sherlock Holmes a game of shadows.
No it wasn't, Moriarty was supposed to be smarter than Sherlock the movie was so unfair to Moriarty . Moriarty was even a professor , I was rooting for Moriarty
Achyuth Thouta true, they kind of underplayed him.
But you gotta admit the actor they got to play moriarty was really good.
I love the reveals here; it shows that despite Moriarty putting Holmes and Watson on defense the entire film, Holmes was getting ahead in the game of shadows. When Moriarty revealed he killed Irene, that was also the moment where Holmes got the final clue he needed to seal the mastermind's fate. From there to the end of the movie, it was Holmes distracting Moriarty and letting the man think they were all dancing to his tune. Well played, Holmes!
If you ever need a perfect example of good writing, this is the place to start.
There is somewhat of a plot hole. A few days have probably passed between when Holmes switched the red books around and I highly doubt Moriarty would not have looked at the book even once during that time
Well he’s had no reason to expect any change in it and he’s been preparing for this night. Arrogance and lack a suspicion
It’s a very minor one though. It was too late anyway even if he would’ve notice he still would’ve lost the money. It may have changed events but that much is guaranteed. And the reason he didn’t notice can be chalked up to arrogance and cinematic effect
This occured to me as well, although a possible explanation, not too stretched I would say, followed. Moriarty was said to use the notebook to record the changes in his vast property and there might not have been any input for him to record (or any he found worth recording). Of course, if he was sufficiently careful (and/or paranoid), he would have checked the notebook soon after the Heilbronn incident, he was, however, very arrogant, therefore it might have not ocurred to him as a possibility that Holmes would not only take note of his notebook and realize its significance, but also sucessfully steal it from him.
Nitrama Tawtute true but i just find it strange that he wouldn’t even see a single page even when moving it to different coats bc he took it with him even to the peace summit
They just made fun of Moriarty by making him lose a chess match and look like a fool. The real Moriarty is smarter than Sherlock
The one thing that interests me about this scene is that the way Sherlock Holmes said "Check", he's not just talking about putting Moriarty's king in "Check", but also for Moriarty to "Check" to make sure he still has his book. Great performance, Sherlock Holmes.
Well noticed!
The motif of the trout and the fisherman has been prevalent throughout this movie. The idea being that Moriarty has been hunting Sherlock. And we think that at the end, it will be flipped and revealed that Sherlock was the fisherman all along. But instead, it shows that he was indeed the fish: just that Moriarty wasn’t hunting a trout. He was hunting a SHARK! :)
I really like this! It's just 2:17 to 2:21 but it is so powerful. Fishing, catches a trout, it turns to a shark and then back to a trout smoking a pipe.
And the shark comes up out of the water and gobbles up the fisherman.
Moriarty baited Holmes without knowing who, or what, he was baiting. He wanted to show off to Holmes, I suppose. But Holmes in the end proves too much for him.
Be careful what you fish for!
I love how they are playing the game of Chess both physically and mentally in this scene. “Be careful what you fish for🎣 🐟 then showing a shark 🦈 instead of a fish?? Man this movie is the best
is obviously a fish 2:21 i mean look at that.
Banks the fish turns into a shark then back into a fish to show that the fish can also be the hunter like the fisherman

I enjoy the tactical difference between Holmes and Moriarty. Moriarty does these huge, complex and detailed plans while Holmes throws on a cheap costume and steals Moriarty's bank account info.
The most impressive part is how Sherlock explained all of that while playing a mental game of chess with a chess master.. And got checkmate.

I love the analogy with Chess!
Every time Holmes delivers a serious blow to Moriarty, he says Check. And when Holmes basically proven that he won their 'Game of Shadows', he says: "discover Check and incidentally Mate" 2:31
1:58 "The most inept inspector in the history of Scotland Yard" scene cuts to inspector Lestrade lol
Legend says that’s actually Tony Stark just testing his Time Travel machine.
The way Moriarty says Queen takes Knight Pawn excites me more than it should.
I love this scene! This movie as a whole is so underrated and underappreciated for how well written and thought out everything is plus how everything just comes full circle. Sherlock basically used the rope a dope chess equivalent technique to outsmart someone almost equally as brilliant as him showing us how a true mastermind is supposed to play the long game and win. So well done!
I loved this one and the first one. I wish more people had watched it so we could have gotten a third.
This movie is brilliant. Both part 1 & 2
most incredible part of all this is how did he know he was gonna flip through the book backwards.
The rage behind those eyes are terrifying. Excellent acting!
Funny how masterminds are often brought down by the most simplistic things. The things they tend to neglect due to their inflated sense of ego and importance. Moriarty was brought down by not watering the plants.
Great little details to structure the scene @:31 and @1:40. At first Moriarty is irritated and what he feels is holmes desperation to keep the game going. When he checks the book is still there, he is intrigued by holmes bluff. But by @1:40 he realizes holmes got him, and its him in desperate shape. Love it. Its little details like this, combined with good acting, good dialog, and plot, that make movies great. Not a shitload of cgi
The next level of GrandMaster. How they speak and play chess in their mind just terrifying.
Love every bit of this movie..

A mind-blowing scene! Thanks!
Playing chess without playing chess....bold move. Draw four! Go fish! Collect $200. And I declare Professor Plum with the candlestick in the library! King me!
Holmes said so in his Office, "I'm afraid you loose"
He bit his pipe knowing he would blow the spark in his face. Moriarty was too furious to see that
I hope the plants were okay after this
the way he deliveres "horticulture" always seemed funny to me for some reason
I don't know why but I love the 2nd Movie Sherlock Holmes the Story is brilliant and amazing Acting and great costumes for characters well done!!!
Make anotherr one this is completely awesome
This movie shows how genius they are explaining their plans more than saving people😂
I like how they can play chess just by their minds lols
I love it when he says, "Irony abounds". Brutal.
Wait, he slipped him the book like right after Moriarty told the story about the fisherman...Sherlock knew he'd tell that story
The story is from a song called Die Forelle. Moriarty is playing that song on a record player when Holmes comes to get his book autographed by Moriarty. Holmes mentions it. So if Moriarty hadn't told that story, then the flipbook would have been a callback to their conversation in London.
the way the say "rook 2, king 3, rook 3, knight's pawn,..." it's because that's the column where the pieces are before the game. Like "rook" stand for the a - h column; "knight" stand for the b-g column, and so on. Pretty brilliant.
Man, almost a decade has past since this came out and we are yet to see the third one
After watching the couple of movies I started observing people more... I would just sit in a corner and try to extract all the traits I possibly could of a person... Like his/her age, whether they are married or single, right or left handed, the vehicle they own, the job they do... And so on...it just makes me feel more... Intellectual...and somewhat like a detective...
And here i am thinking i was unique...
If only Tony wanted to, he'd use his armor to fly out of there.
just the voice of moriarty sounds like a master mind.
I'd love to see a 3rd one with Charles Augustus Milverton. Anthony Hopkins would play him to a T.
I can't help but to look at Moriarthy throughout this scene, and imagine it's Connor Mcgregor about to punch Robert Downey in the face.
I loved MacGregor in this movie

"Be careful what you fish for!"
What if Holmes ended up losing the game? "Look, I was going to make this awesome visual metaphor where the moves on the board mirrored the moves in real life but I'm just not that good at chess, okay?"
