I've seen the Blaupunkt GBW120 12" subwoofer on WalMart.com for a while now and the $19.99 price tag just seemed crazy to me (now $24.99). Buy 2 and shipping is even free! This sub has decent specs and 400 watt RMS power handling and 800 watts peak. I decided it would be really cool to mount it inside the acrylic Gately Audio subwoofer box and do some demos, then see how much power it would handle before it blows up. How much do you think it will take?

yeah built pretty good for 20 dollars lol even had tensile leads woven into the spider probably only rated for 200 watts rms anyways

White Boy kenwood 500x1 at 4 ohms. Subs ran parallel. Used a multimeter and came up with about 240 at each sub.

Velocity series was really good
Stock sound system used in the 2004 to 2006 pontiac gto and sounded great!
When was that? They sucked in the 90’s.
That thing can probably do 600 all day. I would say it did it's rated and then some. Good sub.
Uh no. It can do around 250 rms regularly without clipping. Although for 20 dollars that is amazing.
Blaupunkt used to be a really good German brand, but now is a cheap brand. Still impressed that it pulled almost 1kw
Nowadays they only stick their name on cheap chinese crap.. very sad
Yeah I bought a blaupunkt sub based purely on their old reputation. It was absolute garbage. I was sorely disappointed.

I would send you a Boss audio cxx12 if you would do this to it.
Williston Audio Labs blaupunkt literally means 🔵 blue dot, but you probably new that 🤪 had one of their decks back in the day and wasn’t bad
Today you can put some decent bass in your ride for around $100 bucks . Remember what $100 bucks would get you back in the day? Diddly Squat.
Back when I was in high school $100 got you a total of 100 watts out of an amp. And $100 back then was way more than it is now. Amplification was $1 per watt.
Michael Hollon yeah a 12-inch pioneer impp injected molded poly propylene! Never thought in a million years PPI would be considered trash and sell out. I remember paying $2,800 for 2 PPI power class pc2350 amps back in 97
Steven Young now you can buy a 2000+ watt amp for around 250$ (SKAR RP 2000.1)
Ugh. I had 2 impp 302 (12") in a 7cuft ported box.. Yep.. No trunk left. But I had those lows for cheap. I spent most of the 90s reboxing small truck enclosures into larger better fit customs. Often ported as well in strange under seat tubes. I remember my brother having an Orion i doubled volume and ported and never once heard a damn thing for an argument afterwards about anything.. I was 14 he was 19.. Mrv600 and type r 12 in 96 sealed.. Wasted more than the car I put them in.
I hear that. I remember back in 1995 my cousin installed a system in my mom's car. I remember It was a pioneer tape deck with detachable face and even had a hard plastic case to put the face in in your glovebox there was 2 MTX 5 inch speakers in the back and 2 3.5 inch (I believe) in the front and just for that deck and 4 speakers was around 400 bucks. These days you can get something basic like that for under 100 bucks easy.
love this channel reminds me of the late 90's when we were rolling kicker subs and pluto amps
That's amazing quality for ~$20. Back in the day around that price would land you a "VR3" brand subwoofer that would make a loud popping noise if turned up to a decent sounding volume. Now you can get one of these that can actually handle entry-level amps, and could last years too!
Ok that’s just insane. Old School $20 (wholesale) 12” Thump subs were complete garbage and sold for $59.95 in stores. They had a tiny 20 oz magnet paired on an aluminum voice coil former, fast-on terminals and yellow foam surrounds. They looked like toys, sounded like toys and were a general waste of money.
This sub is an incredible value. I’m shaking my head!
You and me both! I bought 8 more of them to play around with 😜
I remember thump and thump pro. What about the garbage that was sold called Hella Beats, remember those.
Pyle Drivers and Super Pros, gold label Kickers and Legacy amps.
I had a 65 watt x 2 coustic amp pushing 2 Atomic 10s in a custom bsndpass that i just guessed on for airspace and port dimensions. I hit a grand dlam on that box as it actually broke the lock on my trunk and broke the rear view mirror off the window. I still can't figure out how i got so much bass out of less than 150 watts and it seems too ridiculous go ever try it again. Most of my boxes back in my jr high and high school days were 16x17.5x whatever because I could have home depot cut the 48" width of a sheet of mdf into 3 equal 16" pieces maximize the use of my precious mdf with little waste. Oh, those were the days. Lol Thanks for sparking some good memories.
When i first read the title for video, it reminded me of when you would be driving around and hear on the radio about a super sale coming into town and they shout "12 in woofers, just 39 bucks" and then you get there and it would be garbage.
I did get my first real pair of subwoofers at one of those shows when I was in 6th grade though. 2 kicker comp 12s for 75 bucks each. That was when you had to spend over 100 to get anything that could handle over 200 watts.
@@wal Isobaric? Same box, see how much powa they can handle continuous (wouldn't try and blow em up on purpose) :)

Hey you should have did a long term test at a certain htz like 50 or 60 or even 70 htz and see how long it could really handle 400 watts rms and the compare it to a leading manufacturer
yea I'd like to see that
I did a 50hz test for a minute straight with two of them ran parallel in a bandpass running 4 ohs off a kenwood 500 watt amp. They did just fine. Didn’t stink or smoke or clip. But yeah if you hook up a 3000 watt amp to them and send it, yeah they’re gonna shred.

For a very cheap budget subwoofer that wasn't too bad. Take a decent 500 watt amp on a pair of those in a small bandpass or even a small sealed enclosure and I'd bet it would sound good for very little money.

I really liked this video. 1. It was in 4K. Awesome idea. We need more 4K video of this stuff. The quality and bit rate were excellent. 2. You pushed the most budget sub ever to its limit. My only constructive criticism: every time Blaupunkt gets mentioned, I think there should be a disclaimer about how they used to be one of the greats in audio. I hate to think there are people who's only knowledge of Blaupunkt is this mass produced, sweatshop stuff, that's no where to the same company from 30 years ago.
I have the 10 inch version of that Blaupunkt sub driving it with a Blaupunkt 560w rms class D amp. I am still pleased with it a year later for a budget sub situation.

Dereck, I've had 4 of these sitting here for a couple weeks for use in the $150 SPL Challenge. Haven't opened them up. Did yours come with any recommendations for enclosure size? Obviously for SPL purposes, you might want to raise the port tuning but, I'm thinking these might be okay in the right size box for a daily beater work vehicle as well. Just need to find the right size for enclosure. 👍
Nope, but I’m trying them in the big RF ported Box I have the PWR12’s in right now.

Damn, For 20 bucks it ain't half bad, I think I might actually pick up a couple of these to mount in my truck
Price has jumped to $28, but still great deal
None of yall including enclosure in the cost
I think it did reasonably well for it's price. Got me curious, so it modeled up in WinISD. The parameters look like a compliance controlled driver, and WinISD agreed suggesting a sealed 1.5cu^ft box - so I'll stick with that. Seeing a compliance controlled driver at this price point is very unusual. They don't list xmax or xlim (missing too many Thiele-Small parameter), but I'm feeling pretty confident that it doesn't have 1/2" excursion capability to handle 400W RMS @ 45hz (the natural -3db it would roll off in said box), let alone 11/16" through 3/4" at 30hz... Probably best suited for a 150~200W RMS amp (150W I think would push it pretty close to my best guess of reasonable xmax and xlim). The group delay numbers look nice and tight - again, that's extremely surprising at this price point and far from what I was expecting. Based on what I can analyze, it theoretically should make for some pretty tight bass although very quiet sub in said box. I can est. about 108db output at 150W (not taking into account cabin gain) - which should work okay in a paired set with most factory radio setups. Very fun watching it blow up. Keep up the great content! :-)
I'm convinced though that it just wouldn't last that long / take abuse like a JL product could... I suppose if the end use was extremely careful, but I've just not seen a lot of lower cost subs take longterm abuse. There's always the one off's however and maybe I'm wrong, but I've never had issues with JL Audio, RF, Kicker...
@@07wrxtr1 I agree, I don't think it'll be a good long term sub, esp for more demanding users (I know it wouldn't last for me). I was looking at it more closely for s*t and giggles - plug the Thiele-Small Parameters into the software and see what happens when I look at the resulting default model. I don't think it's exactly awful for some installs from a $20 value perspective. But I certainly am not or would I ever imply it's a high quality sub like a JL, Rockford, etc. - it is in fact quite limiting from my perspective.
It sealed would’ve kept all of that lovely smoke inside 👈😬
@@wal true enough!!! 8D

That’s an awesome amp right there!
I almost bought one of those $19 10" blaupunkt woofers just for shits and giggles. For the price, its s decent sub.
I'll tell you this though, theres gotta be some extreme sweatshop labor going on in order to bring a speaker like that to be sold for $19. They must cost like 3 or 4 dollars in china for them to make money off off those bring sold for that price. Either that, or some extreme mismanagement when they calculated how many were going to be sold.
RIP little buddy.
Blaupunkt is a big german company.. They make stereo amp speaker and are at least one of the bigger europen company that make carsound. But they do OEM stuff. Aftermarket they don`t do so nice looking stuff but high quality
its a 12 dummy
These must be a loss leader for Walmart. No way they are making a profit after free shipping 🤷♂️
@@AlanRaybasshead I know it is but I was thinking about getting a 10 when I saw it at the store. Its not that difficult of a concept to process. You're really stretching to jump at a chance to display your mental superiority for all the CZcams world to see. Seems like maybe you've been called a dummy one too many times and now you're out to show the world how much of a "not a dummy" you are, am I right?
@@wal i think youre probably right. Thats why i said there must have been some extreme miscalculations on the projected demand for these woofers.
I have 2 of those bridged mono along with 2 of the 8 inch subs on a audiobahn 6 channel amp in my van and they play very well
Awesome 👏
I have two of these Subs in my wife car on 2 MTX RT2100 which are pushing out 280 Watts RMS have been playing them for two years no problem at all. I paid 29 dollars each from Fry Electronics. They're in a custom 32 Hertz 2.2cubic feet box. Sounds great.
Thanks for the feedback
I had an American Bass 12 I got for like 70 bucks on Amazon, read the spec sheet and saw 600 watts but didn't realize it was the peak rating. I was pounding it with a 1k rms rated amp for good 4 months, it would get smelly from time to time. Started noticing it would make some weird sounds at certain frequencies, but others were loud and clear. I ended up replacing it but the sub still plays. Just sounds off on certain notes. I was dumbfounded as to what could have caused it. I've never had a sub react like that.
American Bass is NOT a cheap walmart sub. I have an AB XFL 15 on 2500 watts and still plays mint. Rms is 1500.
@@BassheadGTP I never said it was, American Bass makes great products.
@@Avaddon911 absolutely i have the xfl1244 and it sounds amazing. im a huge fan of hard hitting lows and the xfl1244 does it with perfection even on the low volume i can still hear the low bass which is hard to get especially since im using a smaller than spec enclosed box.
@@Zack-dk3pt I was definitely impressed by the quality of sound I got out of the woofer, and it took over 2x it's power rating for a good 6 months before I started noticing any problems.
I'm pretty sure the issue was a voltage drop from having a bad battery in my system anyways.
I replaced it and I'm running a Memphis mojo5 12 now on about 1500 rms. It's also in too small of an enclosure because I have it in the box for the AB 12. Can't wait to build a new box for it 😂😂😂
You did NOT just do that... That was a BLAUPUNKT!
YOU OWE ME A BLAUPUNKT!
Josh Redman what??
If i was him and i seen this comment i would ask for your addy and send the blowed on to ya lmao
You are the Dr. Phil of Subwoofers👌🏼👌🏼
If I made as much as Dr Phil then I’d make more vids 😬
One of my very first systems back in the day consisted of 4 12" Kenwood KFC-W3002 subs in bandpass. I seriously doubt they were as good as this sub and I remember them being in the neighborhood of $200 cdn each! We all thought it was crazy loud too, could hear me coming for miles haha!
Yeah, subs like this were hella-xpensive back then
You should do more woofer reviews. Do it for SCIENCE!! 😂😁
I hate they dont make these dual 4 ohm
Its worth more than 20, it can handle 500 watts easily till a long time.
At 4:15 that Dam sub took 949 watts!!! And kept going thanks for the review definitely worth the money considering it was not supposed to go anywhere near that and the rms rate is def not that thanks alot two thumbs up 👍👍
I'm impressed that it has a removable motor, that's surprising.
That sub was pounding for $20
You said it brother!
To all the "german brand" comments:
Blaupunkt is made in China for many years now.
In the 2000's they sell licences to let china produce cheap stuff with theyr name on it (what you normally do when you cant produce as cheap as the chineese do but you have a name that people trust, like its the last chance to keep the Brand alive)
The brand got bankrupt in 2016.
China still produce this Kind of electronics.
Sorry for my Bad englisch :)
That has happened to many brand name good quality manufacturers, all us old school guys can no longer just rely on buying by name anymore. It is worse when they still charge a premium price for the name but you get fleamarket quality goods.
@@JB-wq6yi Remember how serious Nakamichi was in the 80's? Right before Sears went under, the Nakamichi name was revived and found in their stores in the form of $10 headphones and $20 soundbars , and even that was too much $ for the absolute shit quality you got in return. That one, for myself anyway, is the worst but also best example of the point you're making.
i have 2, 12in blaupunkt subs pushing 1600 watts. idk how they haven't blown but its been 2 years. Still going strong.
Looks quite nice!
Thank yee 👍
