How is Jesus Considered a Messiah in Islam? | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • Dr. Shabir Ally responds to a viewer's question about the term "Messiah" in the Quran. Jesus is called the Messiah, a title explained through various interpretations, such as "one who anoints" or "one who travels." In contrast, the Bible associates the Messiah with a future king who brings peace, a role Jesus is expected to fulfill upon his return according to Christian belief. The term "Christ" from Greek, equivalent to "Messiah," means "anointed," suggesting a consecrated role. Dr. Shabir suggests that the Quran acknowledges Jesus as the Messiah, reflecting a recognition of his special status, but does not elaborate on the specifics of this title. This inclusion serves to bridge understanding between Muslims and Christians.

What does 'messiah' mean according to the Qur'an, if we ignore the baggage and pre conceived ideas from corrupted books and trust the narrative of the Qur'an to give us answers?
Some dictionary meanings of the word:
    مسح
    Miim-Siin-Ha = to wipe/rub/stroke, passing one's hand over something
For some Qur'anic context on the usage of the word (root) see the following Aayaat:
    masaha vb. (1)
    impv. 4:43, 5:6,
    n.vb. 38:33
    (from an online dictionary)
What was 'wiped' about Eissa ibn Maryam? Perhaps some details and history about him, maybe even his name?
To learn more along these lines, see the Marvelous Quran CZcams channel, learn about the Organic Qur'anic Methodology (first), and then watch the series on Eissa ibn Maryam, along with many other eye opening segments on a wide range of topics.

@gumbi8989 the Kaaba is not mentioned as the Old Testament is specifically tailored to the Israelites (not to say that it isnt useful for everyone, its messages and stories sre judt particular to them), and such a thing is irrelevent to them when they had their own specific rituals and places of importance.
The gap is bridged through Ishmael. In the Old Testament he is mostly irrelevent due to not being "legitimate" while Isaac was. He was regarded as the product of the whims of man rather than the plan of God. But God knows all and God was very particular about Abraham and his descendants especially. Ishmael would not have been without purpose; other offshoots like the Edomites ended up still being relevant due to their interactions with the Israelites and it could be argued that they thus have a purpose. The Ishmaelites also had a purpose: to lead to a gentile prophet that would bring God to gentiles. This would also be why the Ishmaelites were never really relevant, as their separation from Abraham's other descendants is what would end up making them important

I agree, and if Jesus was called the Messiah when he was alive because he was seen as a king who would restore Israel, then why do Christians still call him the Messiah now that he is dead? His speech doesn't make sense, the reason Christians call him the Messiah is because he is a savior who can save people from their sins no matter what ethnicity they are, and he is the savior prophesied in the Old Testament. And also Jesus had proven through his miracles and life that he is the Messiah (the savior from our sins), which is in line with the Old Testament prophecies.

Thank you Dr Shabir for this explanation. Much of the Quran does infact engage with the recipients of the former scriptures including the Torah, Psalms, the books of the prophets and the Gospel. Allah (God), in fact, directly addresses them stating
Indeed, this Qur'an relates to the Children of Israel most of that over which they disagree.
    [AnNaml 76]
6:91 And they did not appraise Allah with true appraisal when they said, "Allah did not reveal to a human being anything." Say, "Who revealed the Scripture that Moses brought as light and guidance to the people? You [Jews] make it into pages, disclosing [some of] it and concealing much. And you were taught that which you knew not - neither you nor your fathers." Say, "Allah [revealed it]." Then leave them in their [empty] discourse, amusing themselves.
6:92 And this is a Book [The Quran] which We have sent down, blessed and confirming what was before it, that you may warn the Mother of Cities [Mecca] and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are maintaining their prayers.
In some instances, the story is relayed as though the audience should know exactly who is being referred to. For instance:
5:23 Said two men from those who feared [to disobey] upon whom Allah had bestowed favor, "Enter upon them through the gate, for when you have entered it, you will be predominant. And upon Allah rely, if you should be believers."
The two men in this Aayah are none other than Joshua and Caleb sent by Moses PBUH to spy on Caanan. Numbers 13:17-33.
Allah (God) absolves his prophets in the Quran of any wrongdoing including in particular king David PBUH and king Solomon PBUH.
And to David We gave Solomon. An excellent servant, indeed he was one repeatedly turning back [to Allah]. (Ssad 30)
Likewise, in the case of Jesus, Allah (God) absolves his noble mother from all heinous accusations and confirms the "known" title "Messiah" for Jesus. Allah (God) confirms the title is given to him before his coming into existence.

It amazes me how people can think another person can be God, or God needs to be man to be God.
No different than a person believing an animal is God, or a moon, a sun, a star, a tree is God,
there is no difference because all of them are created, they are creatures,
whereas God is the Creator, one Creator, one God.
God is Unique and Supreme unlike anything we know or can imagine.
Can our self pride be overcome to understand that?

The origin of the word definitely must have meaningful. We don't know how the people understood at that time. But we can have any assumptions for that word. For example: 1. ISRAYEEL may be the word for the slaves of Allaah which means the entire world people. 2. ISA MESSIAH - AND MASEEHUD DHAJJAL gives us something hidden message to everyone. I think messiah may be giving different types of meaning. The people who were living in the time of isa might be knowing the exact meaning of this word - massiah. Allaah knows the best. 3. Yajuj and majuj - Two different groups of people who are responsible for corruption and mischiefs. I think so. Allaah only knows the exact truth of this words of the olden languages how it was understood by that people. We don't know that exactly. That is true.

I teach One Humanitarian Truth Under God and I am the prophet of God's New World's Testament of the Aluminate' that teaches 1 true belief about God and Jesus. The answer to this question is actually easy. Jesus was God's holy, courageous, sinless, humanitarian role model of behavior who stayed holy through extreme temptation (all the kingdoms of the world) and the extreme fear of torture and death. We as people are supposed to try to behave like him. Now he isn't God, but Muslims have misinterpreted Surah 4: 157-159
Jesus seemed to die on the cross because he died physically, but the real us is our spirits (Matthew 10:28) so Jesus's spirit didn't die and was raised up to God's presence, people in the physical world saw his crucified dead body. Remember Gabriel saw the crucifixion from the spirit world not the physical world like humans in the Gospels. Oh and Jesus taught the Gospel no "s" Christians wrote the Gospels and Epistles years later, and the New Testament is a bunch of letters and stories that the authors never meant to be compiled together. And this sent Christianity into a sinful, murderous tailspin over whether Jesus was God or not and if he was, exactly how was he God. It was basically left up to human imagination and everyone sinning and fighting saying they're imagined theory was superior. This is a large reason God sent Gabriel to clarify this through the prophet Mohammed, because the Bible can be argued either way.

And Jesus commanded that we be Born-Again and Baptized in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
      Amen!

    • @imaadhaq540
      @imaadhaq540 Před měsícem

Not quite. Christianity and Islam have different ideas for salvation.
Christianity characterizes God as entirely merciful and entirely just (not to say that Islam doesn't). This means that to be just He must hold us all accountable but to be merciful He must spare us. These two things are paradoxical. Throughout the Old Testament we see sacrifice be used to earn forgiveness as you are giving up something important to demonstrate that your desire for forgiveness is stronger than your desire for worldly things. Christianity extrapolates on this. As Jesus never sinned, he did not deserve to die, meaning that his death can be given other meaning. Thus, if people live Jesus and believe that his death was a personal sacrifice for them, then they are saved. For this reason Muslims cannot be saved in a Christian perspective because we deny his death and the potential of a sacrifice for us.
In Islam the same paradox exists, but sacrifice is not the key out. As God is all knowing and wholly benevolent, He would find it unjust to punish us for acting according to the behavior that he gave us. Thus, we are rewarded from abstaining from our base desires and we are given opportunities to repent and compensate for our natural shortcomings. Through this way, God can still be just and punish sinners as they chose to sin despite having a way for forgiveness while being merciful by giving everyone a chance to be saved. This might make it seem like Chrisrians can be saved in Islam, but the belief in Trinity is shirk and may very well prevent salvation.

*the Muslim reader of the Quran will realize some of the passages are talking to other nations, meaning the message is rather directed to them more, as God knew many people will revert to Islam, so those of Christian/jews background will find answers*
*I also realized that since God revealed all these books, despite some were corrupted, it all connects together, Ismail is another example, some Bible readers would think Abraham abandoned a woman and her child in the middle of the desert just because Sarah was jealous..., Quran's narration and completion to these stories are just amazing*
*Also Qur'an already in many passage assume you are already familiar with the whole story, for that Quran interpretators used a lot of resources from the Bible, some are of course not acceptable, especially the ones of the like of Lut raping his daughters etc*
*in short, for Muslim even though they don't read the Bible directly, the translation are already has enough resources from there, so we know what the messiah is, and the Quran clarifies that Jesus was indeed the messiah*

Psalm 2, Isaiah 9, Daniel 7. Note that all of the above references are from the Old Testament. The entire New Testament further fulfills and explains it. The Quran is in such serious denial it cannot even speak of this central issue.

He also said that there is a barrier between those who are dead and the life of this world. Jesus is not exempt from this. Jesus is dead and he is not coming back. The Quran says that Jesus will say on the Day of Judgement that he did not know anything about his followers saying that he was God after GOD caused him to die.
