  • Learn exactly why this is so funny with a little period math👇
Thank you @marciasky for this gem of a catchy song that reminds us how little people really know about Womens bodies.
So how many tampons would some need for a period in space?
Depends on amount and number of days of flow
    Let’s do some period math:
Most periods 3-5 days (can be 2-7 or more)
Average total amount of flow is 60mL (can be 20-90mL)
    About 2.5-3oz (1 and 1/2 shot glasses)
    Regular tampon holds 5mL
    Super tampon holds 10mL
So one period in space about 6-12 tampons
(up to 20 for a heavy flow)
Now you know exactly why this song is so 😆

Better than prisons thinking 5 pads will do a whole period

They could have been stuck in space for a LOT longer than 6 days. In a situation like that in the most extreme possibility it might not have been enough

They did not intend for 100 to be for extra days, they also did not send her to space with 100. They asked Sally Ride if that was "enough tampons" and legitimately didn't know. They did not tie them together, and they were corrected and did not send 100 tampons to space.
Sexism was a very real problem at NASA and making adjustments for female astronauts was a frustration, there are plenty of articles about the lengthy adjustment period.

How many months would she need to be stuck up there 😭 100 tampons is way too much

I feel like if she got stuck in space tampons would be the least of her worries

Yeah yeah logistics we get it BUT that $hit is hilarious! She had the dramatic pause, then came back with "will that be enough"then proceeded to clown them as being "literally rocket scientists"

6 days can easily turn into 6 weeks. I feel like 100 is reasonable

They recommend you change them every 4 hours they also believed based on previous studies that blood flow might be up to 4x normal on those situations 92h/4=23 then possibly being 4x worse flow is 92 tampons so 100 isn’t actually that crazy of an amount to bring if they think you’ll need to change every hour for 92 hours.

Even if the flow was 4x faster, I don't think being in space would change the volume of blood leaving her. So she may need to change her tampon more often, but her period would be over sooner. I think the more likely scenario that other's mentioned is that there were extras in case she had to spend longer than originally planned up there.

6 days × 24 hours is 144 hours divided by every four hours is 36 tampons make them supers to cover extra flow and round up to 40.
40 That would be sufficient for the craziest week in space.

They did that because astronauts get stuck up there quite frequently. In fact there are guys stuck there right now and they are about to pass the safe point of being up there that long.

The question then becomes did they ask will that be enough, or will that be enough including possible emergency situations? The point still stands that this is information they could have looked up and developed a standard protocol for. Then asked the individual astronaut if the standard was expected to be enough given the variability in individuals.
