Q: How did we come to have cats in our homes?
A: Our first cat literally just walked in the back door and made himself at home, probably just like his ancestors did millennia ago.

    • @hallaloth3112
      @hallaloth3112 Před 6 měsíci +15

I think a lot of us have that answer. Both of ours randomly showed up at our back door and just wanted a home. They have one. And just by that small choice have enriched our lives beyond measure.

It's a selection pressure, more sociable cats got access to better food supplies, safer lodgings who in turn bred with sociable cats to create even more sociable cats.

I am fascinated by the common communications we naturally have with our cats. I think that's why we naturally get along. A sigh conveys frustration - both myself and my cat do it and we both clearly understand it. The hurrrrrrup of greeting is so close to hello it's staggering. When she's pissed at me she turns her back on me and ignores me - but sits close so I notice. A rising tone is a question and a descending tone is a statement. Are all these learned communication or inherited behaviours of our common ancestor? In terms of clearly learned communication my cat clangs her food bowl when she's hungry and her water bowl when she wants the water changed (usually because it contains a tiny deceased insect or a piece of food she had on her chin) - she's even taken to announcing when she's done a poo in the tray by sitting by the tray and meowing loudly so I go scoop the poop ASAP. It's like she's calling room service... I'm not complaining - best companion in the world.

It really is fascinating. . . and only we cat owners seem to see it. I refuse to accept the stereotype that cats are 'aloof jerks' Because once you take even a little bit of time to learn WHY. . . a whole new world opens up.
Our two boys are so vocal and talkative with us, and I wouldn't change it for the world. A little coaxing taught them when bedtime was for us human, and they've done really while at NOT getting us an obscene about of time before breakfast.

I love cats. Ever since I was a baby, I've had a bond that I can't explain. My parents told me that even as a baby, it was like I could talk to them. I have one right now that I don't think I could live without. I would die of a heart attack or broken spirit if something ever happened to her. We found each other as a kitten and me recovering from back surgery and all other problems, and she helped me through the worst of it. And now life without my kitty 😺 is not even imanageable.

I think its a point to make that not all pets need purpose. Cats may have started out hunting vermin. . .but they are much more a companion animal now. I think they've earned some pampering as a species since we've effectively 'gotten rid' of their job by inventing better storage/preservation.

Gave him a haircut. 3 visits to the vets for infection treatment and now he's a cuddle bug on my lap all day. He's over 10 years said the vet and winter here can be minus 15 regularly. For most of our adult lives my better half and I have had unpredictable schedules so we couldn't responsibly have a dog. Cats, though, weather our extended days at work or random overnights with ease.
We have plenty of canine friends and dog sit fairly frequently, plus we have a family dog who visits quite often. All seven of our cats get along very well with all the various dogs, no drama and plenty of interaction.
A neighbor of ours is a dog sitter and trainer. Many times she has brought dogs over to get them acquainted with cats. Her personal dogs love to come visit their feline friends.
My better half's boss has three dogs and two cats, and they get on fine as well.

#Cats - PLEASE HELP! - My older, 4yr old cat attacks her younger 2yr old sister when the 2yr old tries to start play. - She uses her claws and makes the 2yr old cry!! - I don't know how to stop this! - I've tried yelling and stomping and I've even had to swat the 4yr old on her butt... - I know these are things I shouldn't do!! - PLEASE HELP! How do I stop my older cat from making my young cat bleed and cry in pain?

    • @markvoelker6620
      @markvoelker6620 Před 6 měsíci +3

You don’t say how they were introduced. Did you just bring home the younger cat one day?
When I brought a new kitten into my home which already had in residence Max, my 3 year old fixed tom, I introduced them in stages. I could tell Max was insecure and felt threatened, so during the several stages of introduction, I made sure to give Max extra love and attention. The entire introduction process took about 72 hours. When at the end the two were grooming each other I knew any problems were over.
Perhaps if you separated your cats in different parts of your home and gave them each plenty of attention and then after a couple weeks gradually reintoduced them into each others’ “territories” they would become friends.

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. How long have you had these two? It may be time for a gradual reintroduction if they don't get along in other ways, and otherwise, I wonder if you could just trim the older cat's claws to make swats less painful. I read you should brush a cat and put their hair on the other cat or hold it in your hand to let the cat smell daily so the cat gets used to the other cat's fur & it will help them adjust. Do it with both cats. I had my brother do this, and the aggressive cat finally calmed down & became friends and playful with the other cat. Hope this helps.

I have a question? Do cats get jealous of other cats because I have been feeding a outside feral cat that I actually brought to get fixed but she will not come inside my house at all for any reason at all. If I get her in my house she claws at the door to get outside, but I go outside and I put her on my lap and my cats look through my window and see me petting her and I'm wondering do they get jealous?

And she wants to spray on my cabinets on my floors on my carpets. Behind the litter boxes everywhere not p. She wants to spray. I never knew a female cat would spray. I thought it was only male cats and it was once that hadn't been neutered. But she's been nude for years. And I've had her since she was 2 years old. There was selection pressure on Sylvestris to become more sociable with other cats and humans.
The more social cats could cluster around the grain silos, refraining from fighting over territory and the chance of critically injuring each other and tolerating nearby humans.
The cats that were genetically more suited to this new living arrangement, got the most food and Toms access to other genetically suitable Queens.
Out of this came domestic cats, pets and the concept of cat colonies where the queens (and even the toms) would share parenting duties.
Indeed, mutual parenting out even greater pressure on sociality, getting even more genes passed on, creating a second feedback loop.

Please don't rub her nose in it! That won't make it stop & will probably encourage it. That's just mean. She's upset physically or mentally & needs help. I would take her to the vet as she may have a bladder infection or bowel obstruction since I don't know which way you're referring to. She's given you 14 great yrs. Give her the love and care she deserves please. If it is the new kittens the vet says is the problem, you should give them to a loving home as your first obligation is to your poor senior cat. Let me know if things work out.

Do incipient domestications sometimes occur with the likes of Lynx and Cheetah?
In the urban dense residential area where I live cats have become unpopular and cats are much more likely to be ran over by today's cell phone wielding aggressive driver than were run over by past generations of drivers.
We have a plethora of rats,mice,voles,hares/rabbits and chipmunks which will shred many plants should one try their hand at horticulture. I think cats provided a service in the past at tending to control some of these "cute" things. Finally does the absence of outdoor cats make the entrance of the dangerous to man Eastern Coyote more likely ?
I think the fashion of eliminating cats as pets or commensial animals in medieval Europe helped set the stage for the Bubonic Plagues disaster.
The claim is that all domesticated cats gene pool is from the African Wildcat subspecies but is there any evidence for that? Or does the gene pool contain some genes from the European wildcat subspecies? Was the Egyptian pet cat different than the cats (which were probably bona fide African Wildcats) that have recently been discovered to have been living commensially with humans thousands of years before the Old Kingdom ? Also a different subspecies or even species of cats domesticated in Southeast Asia ?
Also by New Kingdom time were Egyptians keeping domesticated servals and/or caracals? Cheetah? ("hunting leopard")

Humans start dealing whit cats because the cereal crops and mice destroying that crops! Wen humans understand how helpfull is to have a cat family hunting those mice is wen cats started to be domestic! For cats the fact of get food was much easy so they started to be around human settlements!
Like all domesticated animals there is always some thing to give and soething to get!

My cat domesticated everyone around me except my dad because he is not a big fan of wild animals.

Russians seem to be particularly fond of cats. They seem to be everywhere in Russia.

Basically cats were domesticated by humans then after inept realisation, we realised we never wanted cats.

I have multiple indoor/outdoor cats, females spayed, also feed strays around, with onset of winter, male cats are going missing, they all normally used to have dinner and wander together, in last one month 2 male cats about 1+ yrs age old gone missing, probably I presume either seeking females in other territory or depressed and want to stay alone instead of multiple cats company at home. I think they are driven by inbuilt instinct to spread around other territory abandoning good stable food at home. I also have spayed female which sprays it was not the case earlier. All my cats are from single stray mother, mother cat still around for 4 yrs but we don't hold it & have no comfortable relation so fixing is ruled out, several of its grand children dead due FPV but this old mother still gets into heat. overall handling cats in human way is getting messy society don't support

how did people manage stray cats in heat in olden days when spaying was unknown. Today, does the drug magestrol acetate help cats in heat & prevent pregnancy. what best option in society to prevent cat pregnancy in stray cats around which you were just feeding but don't have relationship like holding it or not comfortable taking stray to vet. any drugs to control heat & pregnancy in strays?

Aren't humans rather benefited by leaving all cats in forest, so humans can can avoid abuse and focus more on their personal life goals, so much time lost in controlling cats via spay/neuter & understanding cat behaviour we humans are not good at.
