I Accidentally Saved The Farm $40,000

- Harvest is wrapping up on Cornstar Farms. The video starts with bin fans being shut off, filling diesel tanks, and checking on augers in the big machine shed. After heading to the main heated shop with the 1995 Dodge 3500 Laramie dually, we filled the 2001 Case IH 2388 combine with diesel fuel, cleaned the windows, and greased it.
After cold starting the 1981 John Deere 4840 and the 1991 Case IH 7140, I brought the case over to the main farm to fix a plugged auger. In the mean time, Cooper and Chuck got started combining. Once I got the auger unplugged, I ran out to the field to join Chuck and Cooper. When I was waiting for the combine to fill up, I got out to inspect the job the combine was doing and evaluated if we should change settings on the combine.
After lunch, Cooper was having some power issues with the combine. We were not sure if a fuel filter was plugged, if the rotor was plugged, or if the air filter needed replacing. We tried cleaning out the rotor first. Although cleaning the rotor helped, it did not solve the issue. We ended up changing fuel filters.
After combining for a few hours, I decided to talk about what I think about while I am in a field. One of those things is how I can improve a farm. I highlight a few things I would improve about the farm we are currently on and about how we implemented no-till corn on corn into our operation and plan on continuing to do so in the future. I discuss how we plan to manage residue and the things we are doing in our operation right now for no-till corn on corn to excel.
Thank you for watching!

Shame on you cornstar you made mamacornstar upset
lmao
You tell em Moma CS!!!
As a city dweller who has never spent significant time on a farm, I find these videos fun and informative. Thanks for sharing a bit of your farm life with us. Best.
Cole is a man with a plan. Well, I guess that you will be cutting trees and bulldozing this winter if you are going to join those fields. Boy that is a huge task and I would love to see you do it. Glad that you had a guest helper in the video today. I sure would love to spend some time with Daddy Cornstar; he is a good man. He is more my age but I bet the whole family would be fun to spend time with. I am impressed with the changes that you have done so far. Hauling the scrap iron out, cleaning around the building, widening the driveway and cleaning / organizing the shop. It sure will be something to see if your vision comes true.
Proud of you and your work ethics.
People like you are the backbone of your country. Not the politicians, Not the celebrities.
You, the feeders
I was amazed by the facts and explanation of your planting, yields and everything else. I enjoyed that. Very informative.
I've lived in Iowa my whole life. Went to school with a bunch of farm kids, and I never knew any of this stuff. Cole's videos are fun & educational.
Please keep making more videos! So many people have no idea what it is like on a farm, or even where and how their food is grown. Your knowledge of how your practices affect the nutrition of the soil and what you do to correct and maintain the land is awesome. It is so refreshing to see honest, hard-working people who make this country great. Keep up the great work!
I learned more from this guy in the short time than I learned for over 70 years. Very good telling how the whole thing works. From the corn picker inner workings to the break down of the corn stocks in the field. Made all very interesting.
Cole you and your family have the best farming channel on you tube. You do an incredible job with the entire production. I have learned so much about our Great American Farmers from y'all. Looking forward to hearing more from Cooper and your sister. Your mom too. The Cornstar family is in our families prayers.
Larry Croft thank u so much!
So sweet....and I agree with you they seem to be wonderful people.....God Bless them all.....
Glad to be from Iowa... good that u represent what this state is about.
We just finished up Corn Harvest yesterday the 8th. Also in Central Iowa! Now here I sit watching videos of harvest. Love all the videos!
Lol, JWB Farms, can't get enough of it, eh? 😁 Glad you are done with your harvest, and I hope your yields looked good. Stay safe, and have a great Christmas. 🎄🎁
@@nataliegraham9552 Thank you. Have a Merry Christmas.
Thanks for putting food on our tables! America needs farmers like you and your family! Thank you
You're such a natural teacher, Cole! Your explanations are easy to understand, yet so engaging! My daughters & I love this channel & your family! Y'all are such a blessing! Sending prayers for the remaining harvest go safely, efficiently & quickly! God be with ya'll!!🙏💜🙏🌽
It is wonderful to see the passion you have for your profession and how you combine technique with technology and built on the history of your previous farm itself.
My 4 year old son says "Dad it Cole the Corn Dog!" LOL He loves your videos!
DIRT&THUNDER he better heart that one😂
My grandson Jeffery who is 6 going on 21 loves Cole and his family. He is a born mechanic like his dad, always has his tool belt on ready to take things apart. He says he loves taking stuff apart but can't put it put it back together. He loves watching Cole repairing stuff and all the different tools.
I think he is a Corn Dog too. Most of the time he is just a Hot Dog.
My 8yr old loves the videos too!! It's a good thing for them to watch!!! God bless the cornstars!! Lol
Love that child!
I have no idea about farming, but i enjoy your videos a lot, you explain things well, so even to a lay person like me understands what's happening. Thanks for all the hard work you all do in your videos. :)
Daddy Cornstarch, you are so blessed to have a son that is so hard working and dedicated
Is there anyone else’s out there that likes the video even before the video loads in
meeeeeeeeee
Lol me😁😁
I do that every time I don’t care if I have not watched the video I know it’s gonna be good
Meeeee toooo
I always do
Summer, I really liked hearing Cole explaining why they didn't till those fields. Good editing, my dear! And I hit the thumbs up as soon as I click on the video! You all are awesome. :)
The sky looks so pretty (around 13 min). Beautiful country.
Wow! That's was an education. I've always had an admiration for farmers but it's great to be able to see the chores involved and the thought behind each process. I love the house project too. I enjoy seeing your passion for what you do.
My husband grew up on a farm in Illinois. I call him my "Illinois Farm Boy." Anyway, they grew corn and soybeans. I am enjoying learning about farming by watching your videos as his Dad is retired now. Keep up the great job!
We love the sounds of tractors starting up on a cold morning on an Iowa farm.
I have lived my whole life in rural south central michigan surrounded by corn...grow up with corn bordering the back yard and across the road..basically all over. I learn so many things from you that I never knew. I appreciate the educational value of your videos! And they're fun to watch as well!
Wow Cole, your a strong young man moving that electric motor. I used to be the same way years ago. After two back surgeries I had to change strategies. You have skid loaders, backhoes etc... Let them do the heavy lifting and save your back!
Dang, Cole, you are a very smart 22 year old farmer! Kudos to you! Amazing how you figure out all of that! I'm so glad I found your channel! 😊
It's always good to save money on the farm especially in these times. Thanks for the video have a great evening
Most folk I don't think understand how hard you farmers work. Thank you for being a farmer
Thank you to you and your family and all farmers all over the world, thank to you good people we have food on the table.
I like watching your videos even though I know nothing about farming. Plus, you’re a lot more interesting than anything else that’s happening in this country.
Cole, I love it when you say “What a rookie!!” I totally crack up every time.😂😂😂
Me too
Dr. Cornstar - I think it always takes a person to look at the land with new and fresh eyes. AWESOME♥️
Cole, great job. Thanks for the video demonstration of factors affecting corn stalk decomp.
I’m glad you explained why you chose to reduce the residue so small. :)
Love when a new video is put up! You’ve gotta make Daddy and Mama Constar proud!!
It’s great to see young farmers like you! Thank you for both farming & filming!
I am a city gal for sure, from the mountains and desert but am fascinated by your channel and farm. My mom's family were farmers ages ago. Love how you just get things done!
Popped up in suggested videos, heard you say "Iowa view" and instantly subscribed! Iowans gotta support Iowans!!
Your house is looking good from the outside.
I'm a heavy equipment operator glad I found your page big dog, love learning about farming
Enjoyed the video Cole. Wow you really have learned a ton of information. That was interesting. I know you all will be glad when the harvest is in. Thanks for taking the time to produce the videos. Y'all take care and God bless.
I always like the videos before I see them because I KNOW I will like it
You and cooper need to learn the grain setup job from your dad, a year or two is fine while you learn all the ins and outs, but you should take pride in giving your dad the easiest job possible. His body will last longer, and I’m sure you want him helping as long as possible. Great job on the vids
I agree with you.....Sure Dad has taught them all they knew, Cornstar can do many things....I was impressed when he was cutting limbs from the tree.....he did a good job....but Dad was near by to make sure he stayed safe and gave him orders if he thought he needed it....his Dad is Funny :) So glad I found these videos? Just what I don't need another video to get hooked on....but this might be my fav....I do like the cooking videos tho....I usually don't watch the dumb videos....I like to see everyday things going on.....:)
Listening to you talk about the patterns you notice and the differences you can make is awe-inspiring. I finally know what my professors and bosses were trying to impress upon me when they were wanted to know what problems I could solve for them.
So in an attempt to influence my son and his family I showed them some videos. My granddaughter who is 14 acted disinterested until Cole came on talking about Life, Jesus and Death. She listened to it all and said he had beautiful eyes that were so clear and sincere. Another Cornstar fan is born!!!
Joanne J Smith 💙
about 3 to 4 years should do tillage but you should rip the head lands for compaction everyear
The reason I always hit the like button first is there’s not a love button, I love the cornstar family and I love Cole & Summer for bringing us along thru the great video’s
THANK YOU SUMMER !!!
Amen Brother............
Cole, Nice video! The end is near and the Combine can hibernate for the rest of winter and the focus will move towards preparing for spring tillage and planting. God Bless
I have learned so much about farming that I didn’t know at all. Cole explains so clearly. Thanks. 💕
Popping wheelies with the combine........Too funny!
Backing up hill really helps.
I didn’t realize farming involved so much wacking off.
well when you have a semi !!!!
I was thinking the same thing, hmm
If you’re not wacking off you’re not farming 😂
The life of a cornstar.
Must be an Iowa thing
Cole I just love your videos especially your handsome smile and your voice especially when you say your name in the intro !! I love you and your dads sense of humor you guys make farming look like fun where do y’all get the energy !! Keep em coming !! 👍
I LOVE THOSE WINDMILLS! I THINK THEY ARE SO BEAUTIFUL! glad you have them. I hope they start to be everywhere.
I know nothing about farming but I enjoy these videos.
The best gardens we've ever had were covered by and planted within a 'compost' layer of waiste plant materials ! Tilling and/or plowing was usually optional.
Our uncle tried all manner of really old methods on his farms; blended with intelligence guided by experience. I hope he passed his findings down !
GO FOR IT !
Happy New Year
Recently interested in farming, can tell right away it's hard honest work. Glad to see that everyone still keeps a great attitude. It only makes it that much more appealing.
Always LIKE the video before I watch, and you have never let me down! Another good one. Thank you!
I’ve been telling my family and friends about your channel. The only one who took interest is my niece who is in the FFA at her high school (4th place in show at the fair showing her pig Penny). She seems to understand about being a country girl at heart.
You're loosing yield because Daddy Cornstar keeps dumping corn all over the floor! lol
This is fascinating. I am learning so much about farming and harvesting! Thank you!!!
Incredible, you amaze me with how much knowledge you have.
How'd this show up in my list? Well Ima watching it =P
Love learning all the science and tech that goes into the food we eat! Keep up the great work!
What a sunset! Iowa is its own brand beautiful.
Been enjoying your videos, can't wait to see how that field looks in the spring!
Nice video, I am currently flaying back to Qld Australia at 10364m at 817km/h watching your videos
Cole makes me wanna become a farmer.
Cole makes me wanna become a farmer's husband
He does make farming interesting but I am too old and not smart enough to fix things like they do.
Alan Inu No Tomodachi it’s not necessarily being smart, although better/faster solutions will come out of it. It’s more about time, experience and learning as you go. Im grateful my father taught me how to work on everything.
@@beteeho Eeeew.
Do you have a rich daddy?
Second to video I love they videos Cole keep them coming
These are fascinating videos. I love learning about corn farming. I see you are not only a Farmer, but a Mechanic & a jack of all trade.
I was wondering how much more you had left to do. Cole that was a great breakdown of planting and harvest. Thank you for explaining it to us.
When you say you would like to turn the three fields into one large field by removing the trees surrounding the fields, what will you use for a wind block? (@ 11 minutes in the video) I'm from Canada and our conditions vary from year to year but wind seems to always do damage if we do not have proper barriers in place.
The wind turbines scene reminded me of Graystillplays when he fills a field with wind turbines
Yup same to me
The more I watch your videos, the more I learn that farming is various dangerous. So many moving parts on those machines. I hope you all stay safe.
I was born in the great state of Iowa and haven't been back since. Learning A LOT about corn, the farm and how much fun you're making it all look. Subscribed.
Thank you!
Cole ,maybe you shouldn't say whacked off 😂I hit the like button before the video starts🙌💪much love
It means cut off!!!!
Wow really 😂it was a joke u r the only one that did not get it 🙌
I’m loving no til farming, A nice manure spreader if you have a good source of manure would be a great addition with all that corn residue!
thankyou for all the information you just shared. very interesting. I will be looking at fields a lot different now.
Cole, I hit the thumbs up before I watch, each and every time! I’m what you call faithful! 👍🏼✝️❤️
Cole starts getting "Whacked off" @3:20
No, he is getting wacky from lack of sleep.
I was a bit concerned when he said he was going to the field to stretch his legs while whacking....
I just hit L3 on the controller to repair my combine :)
Love the music, lively and mixed with speed that matches -fun.
Such a different theme! Really enjoy your sharing of your life as a farmer. The house was the start but now I’m into the farming part too. You are too cute!!!!!!
Ok, since your always thinking of ways to improve your farm when bopping around on the combine, how about looking into high priced specialty and exotic corns that sell for a huge premium. Popcorns, nutrient dense corns, heritage corns, native american cherokee varieties, colored corns, flavored corns, etc...you can run a test bed of say l0 acres w 4 varities per acre to see how they yield or what they need in your soils, climate, etc...
LOL....We had great corn when I was growing up....I can give him at least the name of 3 that you sure can't find where I live now....maybe one, but the other two....nope.....Are they from IOWA? Thought I heard him say something about Iowa in last video I watched....I have a friend who lives in IOWA and she says they have the best Pork ever....sure wish I could order some from there....wish my stores around my area would buy from there....sure can't find decent Pork where I live.....in my area for sure.....
Very little corn grown in America is used for food. Most of it is used to feed cars and cows. The other leading use of corn is whiskey and Coke.
8:41 now we know reason for snapping rear axle!
Great education on farming Cole. Thanks for taking the time to explain!
I really enjoy watching you guys. Thanks.
my friend came over to see me, i heard my old lady say "he's in there watchin' Cole the Corn star. that's what i heard her say
And does she say, the old man
Cole, nearly everyone on your channel except you and Daddy_cornstar have fantastic mullets! When will you be joining the party?!
Dont doooooo it!! LOL
czcams.com/video/GmPDobp3r5c/video.html
Trevor Milliken DC had one back in the day ( not anywhere the length of Cooper's and he would never have let me perm his hair 😂) !
@@mommacs6159 post pics of Daddy Cornstar with a mullet. We need a laugh.
I had a mullet. Hair in back reached my knees when I took the braids out. This was the early 90s mind you.
Thank you for the video ride along.
I use to rent a small house on a active farm. So I got to watch the super long hours the farmer put in during harvest. He litterally was harvesting by himself & would work until he couldn't stay awake, shut down the machine and take a nap in it until the cold woke him, than continue on. It actually scared me for his safety. I'm so glad your family works the farm together.
Why I bring up, you talking about flattening out your low spots. Choose wisely. The farm house I rented was surrounded by a creek & every year there was some flooding, the creek filled up and spilled over into the farm fields. One year it was so bad, I couldn't leave the property, bridges were not passable. The basement always had a little water running across the floor in flooding rains, but the bad year, my s10 pick up had water up to the I bar and it was only 10 feet from the house. The standing flood water was within 4' of the corner of the house. The well had to be shocked that year.
So think long and hard about where the flooding rains will go when the Earth is saturated.
You'll likely loose that much more yield , if it doesn't have any place to pool.
No rest for a farmer always busy. Y'all are great with the videos. You boys need to let Daddy Cornstar have some fun got to keep him happy too. Y'all be safe 👍✌
should set a camara up in the machine shed and do a time lapse of it filling with corn
10:25 Remember the dustbowl
Very informative Cole. Your videos are always great. Thanks again for sharing buddy. :)
If everyone worked as hard as you this country would be great again
regarding vertical tilling: the corn senesced and most of the energy went into the corn right? doesn't that mean most of what is left is carbon? if you till it, that would tie up all the nitrogen left in the soil wouldn't it? I'm thinking the new part to make smaller residue on the field is your best bet, like you said later in the video.
Michael Payton I don’t know much about much but in Aus farmers will burn the stubble from wheat crops and i was told it puts nitrogen back into the ground that gets ploughed, other times they grow clover and plow it in as green fertiliser , so it seems farming is 10% knowledge , 10% guesswork ( for rain), 30% sweat, the rest i think is luck.
Ross Dunkley To burn his field would help keep the oversized pieces from building up too high to grow in and it would restore some of the nitrogen to the soil but it removes too much to help water management and throws all the carbon in the air.
Though he didn’t mean to do no-till with the corn, when done intentionally elsewhere, the idea behind it is that it allows for the stubble create a deep mulch to help take up and store excess moisture (which ironically what kept him out of the field) and allow for microbes to develop beneficial relationships with the plants to restore nutrients the plants take. The biggest problem I see with large scale farming systems is the stubble is too big to big to create good mulch and quickly creates feet of useless carbon the just impedes the process.
I think he would see conditions improve a lot if he could get the new part that makes much smaller mulch.
Michael Payton got it , it’s all a big balance, I guess with wheat it’s a complete other beast that has different needs, thanks for the extra info, it’s interesting.
It doesn’t matter what make of tractor you have they all break even CAT
Douglas McKinnon you have CAT tractors? My family farm does
No farm I do mining and construction I operate the big tractors
I would love a farm and work for my self
Cole sure makes it look easy and fun
Douglas McKinnon it’s honestly very stressful, I can imagine construction not being very much fun.
You sir, are one INTELLIGENT professional farmer. God bless ALL of our farmers w/o you we don't eat!
Yay... almost done with harvesting!! I cant wait till planting season!! Lol. Good job Cornstars😊
"Whacked off" must have a totally different meaning here in Australia... coz here that is certainly not something you should be doing to a corn field. Haha
Nope it's the same here lol
I though he was talking about something different as well.
I believe he said stretch the legs and whack it off!! Definitely not something to do in public... or a cornfield or tractor 😄😄😁😁😁😁
Lol
Hahaha! 😂
Cole, I see other farmers raking and bailing corn stalks. They have cows. If you have too much residue, why don't you rake and bale it ? Sell it to other farmers who raise cattle. :)
You're right. There's a shortage of feed and bedding currently
Great explanation of what you do to plant crops!
Very interesting video. Great to see hard work and knowledge from our young people.
