- Äas pĆidĂĄn 5. 09. 2021
- We're stuck in COFFS HARBOUR... with coronavirus lockdowns happening all around us, we're getting some serious boat jobs done. We also visit the BIG BANANA! Who said bananas were bad luck on boats?! đ
Sailing Tucana Episode #11
Also, if youâre new here, welcome and thanks for joining our little sailing crew.
Hereâs the quick rundown:
Sick of covid lockdowns, I quit my job, packed up my Melbourne apartment and with my boyfriend John, purchased a 50 foot yacht - called Tucana.
Our dream is to sail Tucana all the way up to the Great Barrier Reef in North Queensland. But thereâs one small hurdle⊠we only have a few weeks sailing experience.
Thank you guys for your likes and support! We'd also love to hear from you - so don't be shy, and comment below. Tell us if you loved or hated this latest episode, tell us where you're from, what you think... we're all ears!

No boat job ever takes just 5 minutes. That is the kiss of death
Too right, I put my foot in it didnât I đđ€ŠđŒââïž
Lol. đ
I like seeing both the boat repairs and the cooking.
That fan is called a bilge blower, you turn it on for at least 5 min before you start the engine to remove any flammable vapours that may be in the bilge. It helps stop you from blowing up. I had to change one on my Riviera took me 4 hrs with 3hrs and 59 minutes of cursing, I think they started with the blower and then built my boat around it, yours looks much easier to access.
Replacing parts or meals? Both are a real part of living on a boat. Showing us the hard work is important because âliving the dreamâ ainât all sunshine. But is does make the sunshine sweeter! Awesome video guys.
Hey guys, the bilge blower wins for me. I have actually done that job myself on my boat. Tip on a really good tool to have, snap on do what looks like a screw driver but with a 45 deg pointed end on it. Itâs specifically for removing or replacing rubber hoses around the engine without damaging the hose and allows the bead to be broken. It could have helped you get that bilge blower pipe back on. Itâs a must have for your tool kit.
Ohhhhh that took would have been the perfect, as at least 95% of the job was trying to get the hose on đ€ŠđŒââïžđ
WOW WOW WOW John and cuz Kristina! BRAVO! You are true modern day pioneers!
đ€đ€â€ïž Getting there. Itâs been a steep learning curve!! đ€đŹđ
Great having a mechanic and a chef on board, you guys make a great team.
Haha! A mediocre chef...!!! đ€Ș But I was impressed with how the chicken and leak pie turned out đ€I made raspberry & blueberry jam today!! That was a first!
@@KristinasTravels Hope you put a touch of lemon juice in the jam?

50/50 split for me with boatwork and pie. All of it needs to be done!
Changing the fan and servicing the winch wins!
Haha. I'm so glad John is being pressured into featuring more in our vids đđ€đđ Keep your compliments coming!!!
This is my new fav sailing vlog!
Thank you so much Brendon đ€đđ
@@KristinasTravels what kind of glasses does John wear? I'm sick of trying to zoom in a search the Oakley site!
Great vid! John you are doing some very good maintenance on your sail boat. You both work very good together, And John she is a keeper! Itâs maybe time to put a ring on her finger.
Great video this week đ
Thanks William! So good to hear!!! đ„°đ„°đ„°đ„°đ„°đ„°
Nice job guys, great to see what a non sailing week looks like. Big shout out for giving Sea Legacy a platform. It is such a worthwhile organization.
Cheers Thomas! Yeh, Sea Shepard do some crazy work. Wasn't aware just how much myself actually, which is why I had to stop by and ask and share it with y'all.
It's been such an eye opener living onboard and visiting some pretty remote places.. marine plastic and micro plastics really should be a concern for our government's and our community
Guys. Servicing winches is quite straight forward. CZcams is your friend - as you know ,đ
Hey Andy, I should have clarified, we serviced them ourselves before we left Melbourne, (was messy and time consuming but fairly straightforward), when I did that we identified that the spigots had elongated the holes they were seated in in the housing, causing the gears to track out of alignment therefore rough operation/wear. I didnât have time to do it before we left but they needed to go to a machine shop to be drilled and bushes made up etc.
Regarding your steering sheaves. Try your best to get the sheaves aligned with each other. Imagine a flat plane extending to the next sheave. Better alignment will reduce chafing. Also the sheave pins should not rotate, the bearing material should rotate around the pin. Nice video đ. Sailing interviews are great.
Thanks for the tip Andrew, in the end we had them machined and finger bearings put in the sheaves, they are now rock solid and tracking dead strait đđđ»
Great episode Kristina and John. Great team work. Hoping you are both going well. Cathy and Graeme. Xx
Malc uk đŹđ§ great vid as always đđŻwell John a lot of fiddling around with the blower fan but what a reward ! A nice smile etc from

Hi Kristina and John, Just letting you know that Melb is still in lockdown. And the Fan install wins. Nice honest vids well done. I see you have a BBQ on the back. What you need is a "Jaffle Iron" to make those easy lunches and dinners or even breakfast. Take care Chris
#Walks past SeaSheppard booth, #Goes to buy fishing rods. Love it! you guys are doing great, keep on going I am enjoying your channel!
Definitely watching the cooking! Love your videos!
You guys are great together. And thank you for giving some light to Sea Shepherd on your video. Wishing you nothing but the best life has to offer, and may the winds always be favorable to you. â”
Hi guys, i am enjoying watching all the different types of repairs & maintenance you complete as you go. Am amazed just how much maintenance is required on a sailing boat, it just doesnât seem to end.
Too right Dave!!! It's ALWAYS something.
I kid you not, the motor attached to our main toilet just died the other day. That's NOT FUN at all. đ
The jobs never end, but the new locations and adventures never end either! â€ïžđ„° Thanks for watching and being here for the ride!
Crusing is mostly fixing the boat on exotic locations haha
Great vid, the steel bushes should last a while, covered in grease and under the winch. I have sailed into there, great place to be, cheers
Great vids, great team.
A good mix; John working on the boat, the steering repair was interesting, and; yourself cooking - works well.
Thanks Rob!! Appreciate your feedback! đ„°đ„° This was a fun episode to share with you, so thanks for watching â€ïž
I enjoyed watching the fan replacement more than making the pie, although you are easier on the eyes Kristina (for me anyway lol).
Changing fan. Please and thank you. Love the videos! Binging on 11 so far.
Your videos are great, you both are super cool and always in a pleasant and smiling mood!
You might want to put a keychain float on your keys. Youâll be glad you did if you drop them overboard or off the dock.
Wow!! You are incredibly observant! Weâll get onto that tomorrow đđ thank you!
Really enjoy watching all aspects of your sailing life, and strangely enough having never been on a sailboat I enjoy the technical stuff too!
Wow, that's so cool Caro!! Maybe we can soon convince you to join us for a life on the seas!!? â”ïž đ
So glad to see a happy smiling face. Kristina you certainly bring alive your videos with such obvious happiness with your lot. Am always keen on seeing your next video & where it will take you & John. One question tho, if you have been together for so long, where is the ring on your finger? Maybe John needs some strong hints hey. Take you guys & safe sailing. My God be with you both.
Aww, thanks Glen. Appreciate your generous compliments. We've always just been busy with our careers and saving our money. John isn't the type of guy to make a fuss either. Plus covid has really thrown a spanner in the works! It's always... something! đ
Keep watching though.. who knows, maybe one of these days he'll pop the question!!! đ€
Well, welcome to Coffs. You know I have lived in this area for 14 years and never been parsed the Co-op. Anyway I hope you had a good time in the best part of Oz. Happy sailing.
Another great video - my dream to get my sailing boat is on track and hopefully should be realized next year
Great video. John looks like he has been around boats plenty before your adventure. I'm really enjoying your channel.

Haha!! YOU BLOODY LEGEND CHRIS!!!!
I'm getting a lot of comments saying 'fan'... so to know I have a chicken and leek supporter makes me feel like I have a chance!!!! đđâ€ïžđ„°
"I can't explain it" - but you're a reporter lol. And staunchion/stanchion - I always thought it was staunchion but all the sailing channels call it a stanchion so I thought I must be wrong. But now you brought it up so I looked it up - apparently there's debate about it and staunchion has been used at times, but stanchion is definitely much more common. And it could also be one of those weird English pronunciation vs spelling things. So I wouldn't admit to being wrong on that one.
Replacing a fan vs chicken & leek pie? Both.
Thanks for a great episode.
Spelled stanchion, pronounced staunchion. Americans pronounce it without the âuââŠ
@@BuzzLightyear9999 well there you go. Iâm only half as silly as I thought I was. Thanks for the explanation. đ
Nice tour, so beautiful place/ Thanks my friend. Greetings from Vietnam. Have you ever been to Vietnam?
Was enjoying following your 'journey', both physical and philosophical when I saw your Tucana polo shirt.
I've sailed from the age of 4, much of it at RSAYS where I spent all my youth before joining the Navy (still serving). A lot of those happy times were on our boat, a Tasman 26 called Tom Thumb. I inherited her from my dad and until I moved her to Sydney, she also had the sail number SA131. Of course I know you bought Tucana in Melbourne and I don't know her history, but it all made me smile. I'm also an RYA Ocean Yachtmaster and Instructor, so I'd like to offer my fee-free services if there is ever something you'd like to bounce of someone, particularly in the areas of seamanship, boat handling and navigation. Until then, fair winds.
Awww!! How amazing. You're obviously a fellow Adeladian! FANTASTIC - re: RSAYS! John and I are actually originally from Adelaide. We met there! At school!!!! But never did any sailing like you unfortunately. đ Tucana spent her first 11 years in Adelaide, and 1 year in Melbourne before we purchased her! The yacht came with the Tucana RSAYS shirts in the wardrobes -- pretty cool! đđđOh wow - how generous of you!! What a legend. Thank you for being here. We really really appreciate it - and YOU! đâ€ïž Cheers, and likewise, fair winds in the meantime â”ïž You should give your business a plug here in the comments incase anyone here is keen for some training! đ
Top epesode mateys :)
Glad you enjoyed it!! đâ€ïžđ x
hi
Winch service is easy to do yourself and if you need some new parts just order online. Probably one of the easiest boat jobs that there is. Ok just saw what the issue was with the winch and got it if you don't have the necessary tools/material to do that repair.
Should never comment before you watch the whole big bananas episode đ đ€·đ»ââïžđ
Yeah unfortunately this one was a job for a machinist, Harken donât supply most parts for our legacy winches anymore so needed a drill press to locate and re drill the original center in the Housing and then machine bushes to suit... Hopefully its enough to keep the winch going for a while longer, they quoted $8k for replacement with current model đ€Ș
@@jptilley10 8k is madness and yes iâve come across the same with LewmarâŠthey stop making spares to get people to upgrade. Was looking for particular model jaws and Lewmar was like no we donât supply those anymore. Luckily there are people 3-D printing them. Hope yours will turn and rattle like a new one
@@smulismuli7976 yeah itâs crazy isnât it, they. Even change the mount for the electric drive so you canât just replace the winch, need to replace the whole thing including the electric motor đŁ
Thatâs great that you can get the lewmar parts you need 3D printed! Could just about do with a 3D printer on board the amount of parts we seem to need at the moment đ
Hope your repair project goes well đđ»
Great storytelling and very informative. It's a shame that some of the sailing channels have resorted to showcasing their bodies to get viewers. Cringe. Thanks for keeping it real.

Anything that can rust on a boat shouldn't be on a boatđ€. Then again they make washing machines and fridges that rust go figure. I am enjoying your story telling and adventures, being a journalist should put you ahead of the pack, happy sailingđ
Ive only been to Uluru so far!
Replacing the fan
I don't think I could purchase a vessel to sail as you are and plan to with an open Helm. Even in good weather you will be getting wet from the spray of the waves. But that of course is me.... it is a beautiful vessel you have.
Yeah they'll rust to hell... :-(. How good of John to eat all the chocolate. Have two explanations for the Bananas being bad luck - they make other fruit go off so your fruit would go bad and then back in the day you could presumably end up at more risk of scurvy. Alternatively they produce ethene, which is what makes the other fruit ripen, but it's also explosive if you have alot of it. They used to ripen bananas by putting them in warehouses full of ethene predictably they'd often explode. If you had enough bananas on a cargo ship I suspect you could produce enough ethene to be a risk to the ship too if it wasn't well enough ventilated (not a risk on a yacht, but enough to give them a bad reputation!). Love watching both the fan replacement and the Chicken and Leek pie :-)!
.
John put tef-gel on them for the time being... but thinks we may need to get them re-made with bronze alloy. Thoughts? đ€
@@KristinasTravels sounds good for now, it's not going to happen overnight and I'm not an expert but you definitely get seawater into winches and mild steel will rust anywhere on a boat (I do know that much :-)!) you've also got to be careful putting dissimilar metals next to each other as it speeds up the corrosion by electrolysis, I'm sure there are people more qualified than me to give you an answer (possibly try e-mailing lewmar) - good luck!
Definitely fan replacement. This is not a cooking channel.
A am 10 years old and a big fan me and my dad have been fully re rigging and redoing our 42 foot double master me and my dad watch like ten of you videos a day

I think John won this round. haha! Dam John and his fans! đ
G'day from a sunny Sydney. Fantastic to see you've arrived in Coffs. Just a little bit of advice from an old seadog...learn to service your winches yourself. To spend $250 bucks for something you could have very easily solved yourself, if you keep going at this rate you'll soon be bankrupt...seriously though, everything about cleaning, servicing & repairing winches can be found on CZcams, and when all else fails, find someone moored in the marina who has many years sailing to help you out...I have found that fellow cruisers are more than willing to spend a few hours disassembling a winch with you...JUST ASK!!! You are one day going to find yourself on passage and a winch will seize up and you are going to have to fix it then and there, so the sooner you experience doing this kind of easy peasy work while docked at a marina, the better.
Hey Beazle! G'dayyy! Glad to hear the sun is shinning there today.
This time round, the winch needed a repair not a service. John recently serviced them down in Melbourne before our sail up (not sure if you've seen those earlier episodes or not đ)
From John: Yeah unfortunately this one was a job for a machinist, Harken donât supply most parts for our legacy winches anymore so needed a drill press to locate and re-drill the original center in the Housing and then machine bushes to suit... Not american and I've always heard it pronounced it stanchion - guess it's one of those things.
