NASA Says Voyager 1 is Sending a Strange Signal From Interstellar Space

- Voyager 1, the farthest human-made object in space, is in trouble. The spacecraft, which has been traveling for nearly half a century, is experiencing serious issues transmitting data back to Earth. It has suddenly started sending a strange pattern of 1s and 0s, which makes no sense. This has put engineers and scientists on their toes to diagnose and fix the problem from 24 billion kilometers away so that the historic mission can continue to provide invaluable insights from its journey through space.
But what exactly is causing the spacecraft to transmit this mishmash of data? Is this just a small technical glitch or a significant malfunction happening in the background? Finally, and most importantly, considering the spacecraft's age and distance, is it even possible to address this issue?

What's wild is, I was 20 when Voyager 1 was launched. I'm now 67 and that craft is still working, malfunctioning a little but still on the job. Unbelievable.
We all begin to malfunction as we age!
@@moosehead482 Yes but so far I feel lucky in that regard.
I was 10 and Star Wars was released that year. Punk music was a relatively new phenomenon.
I was man when voyager launched. Now I'm black and homosexual transgender Muslim
@@juser-abuser I hear Voyager identifies as same. Maybe you and Voyager can get together. You'd make a nice couple. We'll send you up in a rocket and put you on course to meet up. 👍
Its such an insane miracle that Voyager still works at all. This thing was built back when a “computer” filled an entire floor of an office building.
The computer in my home's *thermostat* is more powerful than the computers in Voyager.
Exactly. I don't think it's that much of a mystery why it's sending zeros and ones. It's a mystery it's sending anything at all!!
In the 50's and 60's computers were large by the 70's computers were getting enough engineering to be much smaller.
Exactly. At the time it was built and launched, it was never expected to last nearly this long. Kind of like a boner that lasts over 4 hours.
Agreed they certainly don't make anything the way they used to
I am glad that unlike most channels these days that spread panic and misinformation related to Voyager spacecraft, you actually explained what's really the problem with Voyager probe, and how it's linked to two of its computers. It was such a detailed explanation, beyond what I expected tbh. Keep up the good work. :)
For real 👍
That's not the truth. It's really Aliens interfering and sending back that info to distract us of their very near attack and world domination
Cool comment I agree.
🤔. 🤩
Thank you.
The real problem is there is no way to remove the cartridge and blow in it when the thing is billions of miles away
Hilarious!
They should put my ex on the job she’ll blow anything and everything!
The snag with sending a maintenace engineer to have a look at it, is that he would want a special company car, and they're *_expensive!_*
Scientists and engineers can't fix 1's and 0's. You Need an actual Hacker. Come on N.A.S.A. use those brains.

Plot twist.. V'Ger as it now likes to be called has achieved sentience and is now trying to communicate with the carbon units back on Earth after it interpreted its programming as instructions to learn all that can be learned and return that information to its creator.
Anyone recognise this storyline?
They should ask William Shatner to solve the problem!
Sterilize the carbon based units. Also, get that alien sexpert to grow some hair 😡😡😡!

Tech help;
“Sir, have you tried resetting it by turning it on and off at the same time?”

I headed a team back in the `60s under Wozniak that was having trouble with an experimental version. I told Steve, "Just shut it off for 20 seconds & restart it. It worked great! I wanted to call it "The Shut Off", but Steve was kinda partial to "Reboot". Stupidest thing I ever heard but what the hell ...
I was in 4th grade in 74 and Wozniak showed up to class and proposed to our math teacher and invited us to the wedding.

Its funny how fixing Voyager and Hubble is the same solution Comcast suggest when my internet is down.
About 45 light hours round trip comms lag with Voyager after travelling for decades. That's both staggering and so mind boggling near on a galactic scale as to make one realize just how far even the nearest stars are.
its impossible to fathom how big the Universe is, our brains just cant do it.
Movie= What was thought to be a mechanical failure in Voyager 1 causing a strange signal to be sent home is discovered to be a message from intelligent life sending the secrets of the universe through binary data.
Maybe it’s had enough of being out there alone it’s done it job now it wants to come home and wants commands to turn it around before it’s power runs out ,,I for one would love to know it’s on its way back not that I would see it return I will be well gone myself,,to think it will wonder space indefinitely longer than any lifetime of any of us seems a shame and wonder alone and maybe no one will ever find it for billions of years it just seems a shame to lose this precious little craft when so many care about it as I remember the day it launched
Now imagine if the cameras could be switched back on and we could see something
I have seen the movie Contact.
Those are instructions on how to build a hyperdrive spaceship!!

Why would a highly intelligent species want to consume so much toxicity and poison?
I'm half a century old too. I repeat myself and don't make any sense, don't worry about it.
If it's so old and outdated, but so important, why not just... build another and throw it up there. We should be able to build something with a longer lifespan, better technology, and more updated info for other life to see some day.... Seems like we should be considering having a back up or something
Just in, signal translated : it appears your space probe warranty is about to expire, we’d like to talk to you about an extended warranty.
I was waiting for that.

Astronomy is beautiful to watch 👍😄
He work 45 years that is too much for Voyager that is so impressive maybe they will find signal again if they not. Voyager thank you good luck in deep space
Perhaps it's not a malfunction at all- binary and ascii codes were widely used in early days of computing, and easily translate to both word and math
They were used way before the word computer was invented
Prehaps aliens have hijacked Voyager & using it to send us a message..
They should release the data

NASA: What the hell is a "Kirk Unit"?
Scary to think about being out there. Funny how it’s power source has lasted so long when most power sources run out pretty quickly
It is nuclear powered. And the components are all low-power electronics. Not too hard to comprehend for someone of average or above intelligence. I guess that explains your comment.
It probably is a signal, we just haven't figured it out yet.
Yet we can't make a refrigerator that lasts 5years
so beautifully spoken ! love the narrator and story telling !
It would be fantastic if we could launch a really really fast relay transcoder kinda device whose sole purpose (other than i guess having a camera) would be to hear that distant signal from both voyagers and relay it back to earth when voyager itself is simply too far away to be heard. If Voyager doesn't break, it could theoretically double its potential distance for study.
Voyager is hitting the physical edge of our simulation
Into the unknown. Laws of science become murky.
"Help me I've fallen; and I can't get up!"
I believe that the message translates to “Help! I’ve been involved in an accident with a Tesla!”.
The condition of Voyager 1 reminds me of that old Plymouth I drove when I was a university under graduate. Mercifully, my old Plymouth was totalled when it hit a tree. Hopefully Voyager does not meet a similar fate.
Best of luck to both Voyagers.
Pretty amazing it hasn't ran into anything
They should share this raw 😊data and get more eyes on it
Oh no
I wish I could give Voyager 1 a hug and tell it what an amazing job it's doing.
When my car was getting old it also began making all kinds of glitches. And I turned it off and it never tuned back on again. I think it aged. So, what's wrong with the voyager?
maybe the message is "send more Chuck Berry"
Oh the old turn it off and on trick.
I think I could be a Space Engineer.😆
What’s the background music name??❤
Aliens maybe using Voyagers tech to relay messages
It says "IM SCREWED,THEY CAUGHT ME SPYING AND NOW IM THEIR PRISONER,THEY ARE COMING TO GET THEIR PILOTS AND THEY BETTER BE SAFE!!!!!"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
They massively overestimate the abilities of my phone.😆
It's miraculous that it's still working at all. People are smart as shit.
Well, the fact that Voyager carries information about the human race on board means to me that even after it completely shuts down, the mission will still continue.
ET’s stumbled upon it and changed the narrative.. They input a new message stating
“No hablamos ingles”
Hope they can figure it out.
Who even knew that Voyager uses FDS! 🤧
The dam thing has done it’s intended purpose, a hundred fold over, there’s more processing power in todays watches, that in a craft a billion miles away that still sends data back. Built over 50 years ago it’s a miracle we didn’t lose it already.
That’s amazing. What kind of data it sending regarding what?
It lost its " mind". It has no reference points and doesn't know if it even exists
Finally extraterrestrials found it and it is now VGER. It will come back to fulfill its cleansing mission.
Might be like my TV, switching on after its been switched off. Like some energy is getting at it. Not going to sleep till it’s unplugged .
That happened to my wife the other night. Turned off the SmartTv and came to bed. Heard someone talking a couple of hours later. We both got up to check the house. Our Smart Ass Tv was up and running some late night Advertisment thing. She still swears the set was off when she left the room. I'm not going to tell her she's crazy. Maybe this spooky old house has a ghost who likes adverts at night.
Earth 3.7 billion miles away! 😎
Low voltage will cause any weak spots in chipsets to get hot. Causing a poor connection. Also, you cant tell me its traveled this far without something slamming into it like a bullet through foil.
Space is very big and spread out. If you shoot a spaceship in a random direction, chances are you will never hit anything.
@@sergiv5613 well, at lest what we have sensors to observe or detect.
@@BigDaddy-666 LOL, James Webb proves his point, it was in orbit where all the junk is. Once past that, space is basically empty!

yup. That's why we can see light from galaxies, billions of lightyears away.

I wonder what it looks like by now... Peppered by space dust for almost 50 years...
We've gotten our money's worth and more from the Voyagers.
As expected. Thanks for the nasa mission at that time.
Imagine an engineer got somehow stuck to the probe, what a nightmare
This satellite has survived a lot longer than it was ever expected to. Plus the technology is so antiquated I'm surprised it's still in 1 piece.
You forgot to mention the intense radiation the spacecraft is experiencing through out its life!!!!
An unceasing bombardment of radiation... Truely amazing how resilient this craft has been.
People forget that these Voyager ( or should I say VIGR ). We’re not designed to operate for so long. The fact that they are sending TEENY TINY BURSTS back is more because of our radio telescopes powers
To me, I would say it is a definitely a victory for NASA Voyager, one and two has been on their journey for 47 years now never intended to engage with earth with data this long incredible😮
Leave voyager one alone! It’s doing its best!
I dont know about this stuff but do solar flares interfere with transmission corruption.?
The Voyager spacecraft are engineering marvels. Unfortunately, this time it sounds like a failed buffer or some other non-redundant hardware item. It's not likely JPL will be able to program around it. Maybe it's just a bad connection. We could send a robot hand up there to smack it on the side. Works with old TV's. RIP Voyager.
Maybe it ran into Planet 9, which is short-circuiting it?
Just hearing about this is sending slivers down my back.
Just turn it off and then back on, works every time.
Maybe it is time for a new mission like Voyager ❤
It's the Engineer dude from the Juggernaut sending his regards...😅
I fully understand why NASA engineers are working so feverishly to keep the Voyager's instruments working, for once Voyager finally quits working and sending information, it's the unemployment line for them.
What I think what's the message meaning: it's link prob? Sounds recorded? Or say the 01s at fast as u can and see if u can translate words.
Voyager last message “ I think I saw a 2”
How does it have power left
Hey nasa 'control alternate delete, works every time.
So awesome that thing is still going, wish they would make a better one today and launch it
Some time in the future, we will recover it. And put it in a museum.
It's transmitting "so long, and thanks for all the fish".
Poor little fellah. It's transistors are getting old and failing. It's suffering from space dementia.
Is this data public. I’d like to get my hands on the “erroneous signal” to see if there is a pattern. So called “irrational binary pattern” that they won’t share.
It’s a technical glitch…NASA has already addressed this. It’s having an issue recharging its batteries, so it keeps shutting the FDS off. It doesn’t have the ability to communicate back home, so that’s the best they can get to alert its having a problem. There’s no pattern to the numbers. It’s basically stuttering. Mystery solved.
It’s like the Star Trek movie where voyager was searching for it designer.
8:25, who is to blame for that?
