    Transcript:
Well, a court order to pay child support, like any other court order, is like a landmine. You have to handle it very carefully and delicately or it can blow up in your face. A court order must be obeyed until you can prove to a judge that there's a legal basis to change it.
There are many circumstances where a person who's ordered to pay child support may lose that ability to pay it. Such as, a disability, job loss... Or maybe that person's time-sharing with the children has substantially increased. If you have more time-sharing with the children, this means that you're incurring more household costs, and having less time to work. Yet, you still find yourself having to pay the same amount of child support.
If you find yourself in these unusual circumstances, it's always best to try to negotiate an agreement with the other parent to change or modify the final judgment or court order, depending on the circumstances.
The judgment can be modified to reduce or eliminate child support by agreement. Of course, negotiations and settlements are always encouraged by the court, and the judge will normally approve or accept whatever settlement the parents reached privately.
If a settlement is not possible, then you should consider filing a petition for modification. The courts will require that there be a substantial and unforeseen change of circumstances to modify the judgment. You should keep in mind that any petition for modification should be filed as soon as possible. Otherwise, the obligation for child support remains in effect until a request for modification is filed and approved.
