    Sticky valve vs. stuck valve…
    1) Sticky valves have a challenge rotating as expected…
    2) Stuck valves have difficulty moving up and down (open and closed)…
In the M20C’s O360… a stuck exhaust valve will clash with the piston crown as it reaches too dead center…. This leaves a mark on the piston and bends the valve’s rod.
The engine vibration and lack of power resulting from the stuck valve leaves a strong memory.
Carbon build up in the valve’s guide is a strong cause of stuck valves…
Look for matching chunks of carbon in the oil filter/screen…
Cleaning out the valve guides is an ordinary aircraft mechanic job…
Nice to have a JPI when this happens… having a stuck valve with only one EGT indicator…. Isn’t enough to go on.
    Go Mooney!

How is it these things are allowed to run on leaded gas, no catalyzer, straight thru pipes, no muffler?

Look close… there is a muffler in there…
The cabin heat comes from a muff that surrounds the muffler.
And… the aviation world is slowly moving to lead free technology…
In aviation… change is very slow…. This airplane was built a decade before cars got catalytic converters…
If you still drive a 1965 VW beetle… you wouldn’t have to put a cat on the exhaust…
