    I had install diaries playing whilst I was folding laundry and this one motivated me to go to the garage and use speaker pop whereupon I found one tweeter out of phase. I am thankful that my crossovers are easily accessible. I'm all phased up now. Thanks guys keep up the good work

    When he says “phase”, he actually means polarity.
    An opposition of polarity between two speakers will cause a “phase effect”; its like the sound cancels itself out.
    Phase is when two speakers play the same sound and one of the speakers sound is delayed causing the sounds to be “out-of-sync” with each other

    Once again, thank you! For a once in a blue moon speaker install I got a polarity checker app and first tested it on the home stereo and it works great or at least gets the job done. I bluetoothed the pulse tone to the stereo unit. I am from the UK and am looking to install Vibe Slick 6" speakers. The component variant up front and the two way variant in the rear doors. I have had good experiences with Vibe Audio equipment in my previous vehicles. Keep producing great stuff, as I think you are educating people in more than car audio but also the basic electronic elements too. 👍

    Lets remember that phase and polarity are NOT the same thing. take sine wave A, reverse the polarity and now wave B is a 180 degree reversal of wave A. Do the same thing with phase and you are playing with time, phase gradually shifts, which can still result in a 180 degree flip. Time alignment changes relative phase between speakers place in different locations.

    • @ADR69
      @ADR69 Před 6 lety +2

      if ALL your speakers play "inwards" you are in phase. if ALL your speakers play "outwards", you are in phase. if ONE of those speakers is going in, while the others are going out, you are OUT of phase. this is audible too; if you have almost no bass response, there could be a speaker out of phase. you should be compressing the air inside the vehicle, but speakers out of phase just move the air around.

  • @djijspeakerguy4628
    @djijspeakerguy4628 Před 6 lety

    It will only sound bad if some speakers are in phase and some are out of phase. If all of the speakers are out of phase, the speakers will sound good to my understandings.

    • @billparsons7732
      @billparsons7732 Před 6 lety

      I think the problem is people are not understanding what phase means regarding speakers. All phase means is the speakers are moving in unison in the same direction (either in or out) at the same time. So, if both speakers are connected "backwards" they are in phase. Remember, audio signals are alternating current (AC.)

      Yes it did. I also read some where that if there's an in line capacitor it might show negative phase due to the charge on it. I just wanted your opinion. Thanks again.

  • @RobHTech
    @RobHTech Před 4 lety

    Ya but, phase is not equal to polarity. FR and FL could both have proper polarity, and individual speakers could still be out of phase. It's easy to check polarity. Phase requires microphone, DSP, etc. to actually check the phase and then adjust it ... presuming a DSP was installed.
    From what I know, well designed passive crossovers are designed to account for phase and are automobile specific, as in not for a house/concert hall/whatever.
    So that's why, for one reason, people who go all active can lead to a system that sounds like crap.

      Just so they are all moving the same, it is good. Sometimes if a tweeter is on the dash,it will be out of phase with the door speakers for imaging. It is not always that way and it is something to play with.

  • @billparsons7732
    @billparsons7732 Před 6 lety +1

    Speakers do not have electrical "polarity." If you have two speakers with unmarked speaker terminals, connect a 9v battery to the speaker and observe the direction the speaker cone travels (either in or out.) Look where the positive terminal of the battery is connected and mark that terminal (pen, scratch, tape or nail polish etc.)
    Next, connect the battery to the other speaker (or multiple speakers) and do the same thing.
    Make sure the speaker cone is moving in the same direction as the first speaker you marked. If the speaker is moving in the opposite direction, reverse the battery polarity and it will now move in the same direction as the other speaker. Now, look where the positive terminal of the battery is connected and mark that terminal (pen, scratch, tape or nail polish etc.)
    Next, connect the (+) of the amplifier output to the speaker terminal you marked and do the same on the other speaker. Your speakers will be in phase and will sound great!
    I think the problem is, people are not understanding what phase means regarding speakers. All phase means is the speakers are moving in unison in the same direction (either in or out) at the same time. So, if both speakers are connected "backwards" they are in phase. Remember, audio signals are alternating current (AC.) A phase problem only occurs if one speaker is moving out while the other speaker is moving in. In this case, pick one speaker and reverse the wires and you'll be in phase.
    The good news is, if you don't know any of this stuff, you'll have a 50/50 chance of getting it correct.

    • @stevemurray4512
      @stevemurray4512 Před 5 lety +1

      All true. But this is still super useful information when neither the terminal nor the wires are correctly marked as positive or negative and you're really flying blind.
