James May tries ALL major fizzy drinks at once

- As kids, there's a high chance we all mixed fizzy drinks together (Coke and Fanta was our favourite) but James May has taken things to a whole new level. He sets out to combine every major fizzy drink from his local shop, to see what horrific drink he can concoct.

Clarkson: “I need a zesty drink.”
Cola and fanta orange mixed together is perfect! Try it
I need brown drink
@@heartless604 I'll need to try that, never had it before
@@heartless604 I used to mix Sunny D with cola when i was a lad
@@heartless604 you should try water!!
Summary: James May reinvents Dr.Pepper in 2022 and then adds seven months out of date coffee to the mix. Then proceeds to drink it.
We need more whimsical men with lovely vocabularies.
Why did I read that in Jeremy Clarksons voice like he was announcing Top Gear?
Experiments such as these could have lead to the "secret ingredient" in Coca-Cola and explain why they are keeping it a secret.
"Tonight! Ben sniffs a glass. Lucy pulls a face. And James looks in a jar."

Ah yes, the old “swamp water” recipe of adding whatever was lying around.
That said, grade-school me & friends did come with an “official” Swamp Water: equal parts coke, sprite, and orange juice (with pulp).
You can sub in local equivalents as you like but the point is one part brown, one part clear, one part pulpy juice.
Tastes much better than it looks.
4:57 he makes some sort of noise in his throat lol
Hm, I shall give this a try when I get my hands on some OJ and report back if I survive.
We used to do that when we were kids and the first came out with the self-serve soda machine machines.
We used to call adding everything in a soda machine a 'suicide' - which was probably apt, given the taste.
Welp, I'm back and I lived. The OJ is what saves this concoction lol. I'll probably never drink it again, but it was surprisingly decent.
Hey Bim! I think the reason for the 'head' when coffee is added is because the semi-dissolved coffee particles are causing the dissolved CO2 to come out of solution by giving it a place to anchor itself (sort of like acting as a catalyst)
Yes, you are probably right, it is called nucleation.
Can i have you as my Alexa?
It's the increased surface area. I'm pretty confident that it's the same effect seen with Mentos. There's thousands of small divots in a Mentos, and that gives the CO2 a place to "anchor and escape". The reason the reaction is smaller with instant coffee might be that it dissolves too fast.
I heard it also signifies fresher coffee but not sure 100%.
@@VexxedSR isn't it freeze dried instant coffee? 😅
Glad to see this channel has returned, and I'm very much looking forward to 'Our Man in Italy'.
Maybe as a collaboration for that show James could try making some Italian sandwiches. Lurpak and meatballs anyone?
@Ethan S Close - just double checked and it is Friday July 15 according to the trailer.
do you ever think that there'll be Our Man in Germany to complete the Axis series? 🤔
@@bytemegga 🤣🤣
maybe the italians can tell him that Nescafe is a disgrace to coffee XD
Lurpak in Italy? Mind me asking what it costs there for a pack? In our country (Where it's actually from) It's like 30dkk which is like what.. 4-5 $?
I thought this channel was dead, happy to see it back!
He just came back from Italy

Well...... What's next?
They have literally been announcing that it was changing into its current format for weeks now.

@@JROD082384 or maybe, he just didn't know. Thus he said he thought. I think the fact you've taken the time to insult someone in such a way shows how little intelligence you must have.
Actually there is a fizzy water and coffee drink that’s sometimes sold in coffeeshops, called espresso tonic. It’s fantastic as long as barista knows what they’re doing with their espresso and don’t use schweppes tonic. The downside is it tends to hit quite hard (something to do with oral absorption I presume but not quite sure don’t quote me on that).
Also, coke + instant coffee mix is student’s “all-nighter” drink in some countries, so not sure how popular it is in UK
yeah I've seen coca cola coffee in Spain. It was exactly as I expected, coke and coffee but they just clashed so much imo
@@arunosborn3169 yeah the mix tends to taste like a pile of dirt, but still better than cheap instant on its own. Also hits like a truck, so quite useful for when assignment deadline is TODAY, and pennies cheap to boot
UK student here, some of us put redbull in the water tanks of espresso machines instead. It's suffering, but useful suffering.
@@GoodTato easy way to gunk up your machine genius
Coke sell Coke with Coffee in some markets, like the US. Seems the UK hasn't gotten it yet.
Instant coffee will never go "bad", only stale. It won't become toxic, it just loses it's flavor.
It can go moldy though, look it up
Inspired by this video, I immediately poured some Dandelion and Burdock into a glass, added a teaspoon of coffee (in-date, I'm afraid), and stirred. I can happily confirm it is one of the worst things I've ever put into my mouth, and I've had some questionable friday nights, which I regretted within an instant. Not only did my stomach churn at the foul concoction I'd just forced it to gurgle, but I can _feel_ the taste of it in the back of my mouth. It's much alike how I imagine it would feel to walk into the remains of reactor 4 and hold a chunk of the elephant's foot in the back of one's throat.
Thanks Nathan for sacrificing your self so the rest of us don't have too.👍
the problem is in-date coffee
@@kiiiisu yeah it has to be at least 6 months out of date ( ie "nicely aged" )
Did you use instant coffee, or just grounds
@@ham2413 Cheapest, council issue, instant coffee
I’m so glad y’all are back. I love Food Tribe.
I wonder if all his young employees have just stayed on the pay roll? Hats off to James if they have.
I'd love to see James rank the Monster flavours as someone who has probably never tried one
Not counting the Mocha/Caramel Monster variants, i can honestly say that the base Monster is the best. The added flavors are just…weird
James: "so why cant you do that with fizzy drinks"
aspertame: "so you chose diabetes"
I didn't even look, so here goes anyway:
The reason the coffee makes it froth is the same reason Mentos does. It's the granular nature of the the dry coffee that gives the dissolved gasses a place to attach and release from suspension. Added to that is (probably) the frothing agents in the coffee itself. I'm unsure of that, not knowing how UK instant coffee may differ from US
Hmm you may be onto something. Have you considered letting the Mercedes F1 team in on your suspension discovery?
@@Stevenwave- there’s no getting out of suspension with a Mercedes F1
"I didn't even look" wow you're so smart 👏 so smart you had to tell everyone.
i looked - see my clue above. there are no frothing agents added. for Clue #2: 'say it, don't _____ it (5 letters) - but here, you must
The only thing is that the drink still frothed even after the coffee had been made up with water & the granules dissolved before it was added to the pop, so that would suggest that that it's not the granules themselves causing the frothing (perhaps a chemical reaction instead ????) & no, UK instant coffee (assuming it's just "plain" instant coffee which it looked like that jar was) doesn't have any "frothing" agents.
Great to see the bunker again. Hopefully this means Lucy will also start posting on her channel too
yeah she went full Ghost Protocol
that needs to be addressed then
Yeah it was like they banned her from making videos, what a shame.
Very happy to see y'all back. I'll watch James May do literally anything.
Glad Food Tribe is back! Surely Mr May prefers these concotions compared to the Top Gear 'V8 Smoothie' (breeze blocks, raw meat etc.)?
I remember the v8 smoothie mabye should do it on food tribe honestly so true though your comment as made my day
And for added bite.. *Brick*
Oh man those memorable TG moments. Surely was the best tv show of this first quarter century. Food Tribe (and the other individual projects of the guys) are cool too though.
Bovril, do not forget the Bovril
We had coffee coke here in australia a few years ago. Clearly didn't do too well as it was only around for 2-3 months. I quite liked it.
I forgot about that. That was horrible
We have it in Canada still, it was okay
Same in France. Cola sold Coca-Cola BlāK for only around 2 years. Personally, I liked it quite a lot.
I LOVED Coffee Coke, shame that the average consumer hated it.

@@kalanshwani4515 I commented when it was called Food Tribe. Not sure why it’s changed name. Shame the 70’s sandwiches and spam videos ended.
As a teenager I used to do this all the time - mixing all the fizzy drinks available in Iceland at the time - some of it was actually very nice.
i DESPERATELY need more of James cooking. I know they're filming Grand Tour again but i wish he'd go back to the bunker kitchen more often.
Loved this! 😂. This brought back memories of Secondary school! Ben is a natural infront of the camera too!
except at the beginning, when he didnt speak. hisface is quite funny
3:17 James turned into Jeremy with that "YEAH" 😄
James always making sure the flavour is well informed.
James May, you have entertained me for decades.
Sooooooo happy to see FoodTribe back! 👌👍
Coca Cola makes a coke with coffee soft drink. It even comes in dark roast or vanilla.
But, while looking this up I noticed that Coca Cola also makes a Quebec Maple (syrup) cola soft drink. I'm not sure that is something I'd want to try.
I’ve tried it, it’s quite disturbing
@@GobbersmackThe coffee cola or the Quebec Maple cola?
Coke with Coffee is great! I usually drink Vanilla Coke with coffee.
i would
Coke with coffee tastes great, and you should always be up for trying something new in your life.
He went from wine tasting with Oz to this 😂
This channel was the savour of my lockdown. Glad to see it back!
Fanta Fruit Twist! Not had that in years, soon as James wanted to try it I knew it wouldn't disappoint. It certainly has a unique fruity but fresh flavor.
I have missed these videos greatly! I honestly hope that we will be getting more content. Thank you all so much and I’ll be waiting for the next one!
So glad to see this back! Was absolutely devastated when you guys shut the drivetribe app down 😭
Love these videos! Could watch May all day
he’s looking more and more like billy Connolly everyday 😂😂
Ah, but Billy would know how to pronounce Irn Bru correctly! 😂
This was a fascinating and very entertaining video! Glad to have the food tribe back.
I´ve the whole of german TV channels at my hands and yet i choose watching Sir James May relishing being a twentysomething for life. Brilliant content!
Loved this video ❤️ We need more videos like this. Please !
Would be awesome if James released his own coffee line called Bunker Brew!
It would fit right in with Black Rifle Coffee here in the US.
Great to see James is back on FoodTribe. I have liked, commented and have been subscribed for a long time. Guess I did my part.
BTW: In Germany there's a softdrink company called fritz-kola that has offered a coke with coffee. And now they even offer a caramel coffee coke.
Yes, the cola is less sugar, more caffeine and they add lemon... (which I find quite interesting considering they are later adding coffee to it). Must be a chemistry reason behind it.
We all know the history of Germany and soft drinks...
I'm glad the Germans lost the war.
In the Czech Republic they sell Kofola. It is basically the same thing.
mmm. caramel coffee - in fizzy form, no. in chocolate form, maybe
I love the swirling in the glass as if it were a fine wine.
Im glad to see some Food Tribe back, had been missing it
We called it “the graveyard” mixing all sodas together. Absolutely gross.
Ah, great memories of being a bored, unsupervised kid.
I hope food tribe is going to be filming more often. I’ve missed the crew.
Great to see all of you back, especially Ben, by far the most attractive
I'm no food scientist, (though I am a distiller so recipe/product development is a thing I deal with on a near-daily basis) but I can personally attest to Coke with coffee being a thing here in the US and it IS rather tasty. It's becoming easier to find in the stores locally, too. Of all the drinks you have up there to pair with coffee, I think Coca-Cola or Pepsi would be the best two, just going off of their base flavours and the ingredients used. Dr. Pepper might well work, but being as it's advertised as having 23 flavours involved in it, I don't know how well the coffee would play out or come through.
I was going to comment this, Coke with coffee is surprisingly smooth. Though atrociously expensive now for some reason so I don't buy it anymore :(
We used to call it "Swamp Water" when I was young. Mixing all the fountain drinks.
Retirement sure has been wild for James. LOL Absolutely love what you guys are doing in the bunker kitchen!
“It’s only.... 7 months out of date.” A man after my own heart!
Mr. May aka James. You had a terrific tv show with Oz Clarke about wine and drinking for Britain. In that drinking for Britain you bought a piece of land from some wine guy. My question is, since your idea was to grow "beer" in that plot of land, Have you grown "beer" there and if so, will that be used to brew beer and served in your pub? I need answers for this so I will keep commenting this same question for all the videos in foodtribe. It has been a while
I loved that show. I wish James would do another collab with Oz.
So that's where Clarkson got the idea for Hawkstone Lager.
Coca-cola Blak was a thing. There is a current version back on the shelves mixing coffee with coca-cola. Been on shelves about 2 years.
So your adding more caffein to an already caffein heavy drink, wow that’s so clever….. NOT
This is the kind of thing children get up to when left unsupervised.
The only person's videos that I don't skip through.
Cold brew plus tonic water tastes amazing and is really refreshing!
Tonight on James May. James drinks some soda, James mixes some soda together, and James puts coffee into soda.
Oi Jams, how's da exhoost fume?
A year later I am watching this! New to the gin game. The double dot sounds fantastic!
"It looks like kidney failure."
Oh my, what a line..
I suppose the frothiness once you add the coffee is due to the high surface area of the coffee granules, allowing the CO2 to have a greater area of effect to fizz, much like it does when you pour fizzy drinks into an old scratched glass.
They used to advertise to make Dr Pepper hot during the holidays. You heat the soda to 180 degrees then pour it over a thin slice of lemon (thin is key the lemon can become overpowering quickly) before enjoying. Maybe nix the lemon and try to make a hot coffee Dr pepper.
I'm willing to bet that'd be delicious.
Oh my Lord that's like childhood. Mixing all the drinks together from a soda fountain
coke and coffee work really well with each other in the right proportions. adding lemon and bitters makes an excellent mocktail
Lucy Brown’s observations are so left field 😂 “it looks like kidney failure” is my new go-to negative comment 👍
In the southeastern portion of the US I’d say many viewers that were born in the 90’s would know mixing all of the sodas available at the soda fountain as a “suicide”. It was my favorite after baseball game treat growing up.
I'm from NorthEastern US (PA), and yeah, I grew up mostly in the 90s and we called a mix of drinks like this a Suicide as well. Everyone after a baseball game would run to the concession stand and get this because we all got a free drink after the game
Wow, 11 minutes of adults pouring a load of fizzy drinks into a glass and drinking it... and the comment "You're a brave man" oh dear!!
Dandelion and Burdock. The childhood drink of James May in 1908
YES JAMES IS BACK!
We did that when I was a young teen and we went to dinner to a pizzeria with buddies. But we also mixed in leftover chips, mayo, ketchup and the occasional olive or artichoke piece from a quattro stagioni. We’d each tip 1000 lire and give all to the guy who dared to drink it.
The content is getting more advanced day by day
I've missed the bunker. welcome back with a great topic.
I remember making an instant coffee with sparkling water once and it was quite extreme
You should reduce the mixed drink on the hob until it becomes a syrup, then add it to a normally brewed coffee.
May - you're starting to look like a 1970s Billy Connoly.
And I like it.
Yay! Welcome back, James and Food Tribe team!
I used to do so similar when I went on holiday at an all inclusive hotel in Spain/Majorca when I was like 6 as they let you free reign of the dispensers (and who doesn't love sugar?). Coke + Fanta Orange + Fanta Lemon + Sprite all together is actually surprisingly nice.
I've never been on an all inclusive as an adult, that would probably be quite dangerous adding alcohol to the mix 🤣
Haha I remember doing this in the shopping centre department store restaurants in Oxford as a kid in the 90s. Mum advised me against it and the cashier always said…what’s that
@@recall2880 Nowadays it's even encouraged with those fancy 'Coca Cola Freestyle' machines like you find in Subways and Burger Kings - they've even made an app to do it 🤣

Similarly I do something like this in fast food restaurants that have soda fountains. You basically mix a bit of every drink other than usually water into your cup and different "values"/amounts. I believe its called a tsunami but if not its what I call it.
Brill. Great to see this back . 👏
My local coffee shop in downtown Huntsville Alabama offers an 'Americola', an espresso shot with a can of coke, rather than water, added after the espresso brew. It's actually quite a lovely treat every now and again!
I got this big pack of "sparkling coffee" from this shop that sells discount products and let me tell you... I understand why it was at that shop.
It was disgusting.
I’m gonna have to find a bottle of dandelion and burdock next time I’m shopping because it definitely was an acquired taste but I liked it as a kid !
I still like it, now
I Iike the taste also, I've bought a few times in the supermarket alcoholic dandelion and burdock, you really can't tell the difference.
I saw it once at World Market but didn't buy it. Hope they still have it stock, I want to try it now.

hahaha 1:50 "mustn't mix up the tops" - I was reminded of all those Top Gear episodes where Clarkson and Hammond always joked that James had to put his tools back in exactly the right place.
Don't change the name! Keep foodtribe and keep making cookies videos as well as this other stuff
I'd also make "suicides" at the fountain when I was younger, usually on a dare. I'll still occasionally mix 2 parts Dr Pepper with 1 part orange soda (Sunkist/Fanta/Crush), comes out a bit like a cream soda.
On this side of the pond we called it "swamp water".
That’s what we called it, except we put everything in it.
I have been going through quite a massive bunker kitchen withdrawal period -- please, let's have these at least once per week from now on, shall we? Thank you very much!

It’s great to see Lucy again….haven’t seen anything from her for months. Fun video guys.
I beg your pardon sir but Dandilion and Burdock can only be described as, what you would unfathomably call, epic.
Thank you for actually using chilled drinks, literally everyone on the internet doing content like this uses hot soda, who on earth drinks hot soda?

agreed Ben is great. Seems down to try anything
"Fruit Twist Fanta" the way James says that is amusing to me new meme right there 🤣
