    People will tell you "it's so easy" to replace valve cover gaskets. Unfortunately, it's not that simple if you want to do it correctly. You can also easily screw stuff up if you cut corners or get too rough with coil pack plugs and injector plugs.
    In this video I will show you how to properly replace valve cover (aka "cylinder head covers" in the FSM), spark plug grommets and VC bolt washers. I will also show you the proper torque sequence and torque value. This is for the 1UZFE VVTi engine, so please reference the FSM for your engine if it differs. If you have ANY oil on a spark plug or plugs, you need to do this job ASAP!

    Im not sure about GS400s but when I was changing my valve covers on my 98 LS400 I found out both the cam seals and the cam gears/vvti tube assembly were leaking. I also noticed a leak from the crank area which was both the crank seal and the oil pump after opening the motor up 😬. I know we share the same motor so stay safe out there my fellow GS400 owners and Godspeed.

    Did this on my 03 GS430 over the weekend using this video. Thanks a ton for posting this. Turns out on one side, all the grommets for the plugs were broken. The car runs sooo much better now!

    Thanks for all those great, educational videos. I have a 2000 GS400 (144,215 miles) and keep it in pristine condition and when I got my car from Japan on 01/05/2000, I also bought the "shop manuals", which have helped me doing many jobs on it. At this time I need to replace the Oil Pan (bottom) gasket, so if you happen to have a video available, I will appreciate it if you can share it. Thanks again.

      Nice car! If you’re talking about the engine oil pan gasket, sorry, I don’t have a video on that. It’s a fairly involved job and I believe the sub frame needs to be dropped down a bit. I do have a video on the transmission pan gasket.

    Great work! I have all the same parts to replace, nice work on gasket grease on corners. Notorious leak spots as i here when parking on unlevel surfaces. Did you notice any engine improvement? Plugs were okay?

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks! Some plugs had oil on them which I discovered during a plug change. That led me to do the VC’s and grommets. Amazing how long these lasted, all things considered. 24 years old and who knows how many heat cycles?

    Ohhhh boy is it tight in there, I just did this job last weekend and painted my valve covers while I was at it was a lot of fun it was a pain to get that drivers side cover on without scratching it, took me 45 minutes just for that.

  • @MkdMuzza
    @MkdMuzza Před 2 lety +3

    Nice job 👍 won’t need to do that for a long time. Just curious though, are there any oil leaks elsewhere? It seems like the later UZ’s are a pretty leak-free engine. My 3UZ’s got over 300,000kms and still dry.

    Hey there man thanks for an other great video. I got my valve cover gaskets replaced today and was told that chemicals and what not needed to “burn off” my engine and that’s why white smoke comes from engine bay. How long should I expect the smoke to be around sir?

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! Perhaps for a very short period of time you will have some oil burn off. It should not last longer than a few drives though.

    Thanks for the vedio, nice work .
    I did it my self in my ls400 1uzfe non vvti . Exactly 💯 % same work .
    But you put a sealing selcon 🤔?
    Not need for this amount of sealing selcon , if its to much mabye it case oil leak .
    Its better to remove all half moons from each side , clean them , and clean under them , and put sealing selcon under them and above them , and little in the corners, to avoid any oil leak in the future .
    And just put a little, very little amount of sealing selcon ( Simple smear),, and only head valve cover Gasket it self will prevents any oil leak , without any sealing selcon.

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  Před rokem

      All I can say is keep trying. Passenger side is actually harder, so if you got that side, you’ll definitely get the driver’s side eventually. Usually it’s the spark plug grommets holding things up. Make sure they’re oiled a little.

    • @cadezipperer7298
      @cadezipperer7298 Před rokem

      @@ForwardMomentum I'll definitely try that, passenger side for me went flawless definitely was the easiest side room wise for me. This time I'll try it during the day when I got some light to work with may help aswell.
