    The greatest compliment an editor ever gave me as a colourist was that I attended to much to subtle detail he couldn’t see. That is the art of a good grade. Adjusting the feel, without distracting the eye.

    FINALLY A COLORIST TELLS THE WORLD THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CORRECT AND GRADE. Oh and I read those books. Very in depth about color on those. Took classes as well for coloring and it is no where easy.

      Simone Campobasso color correction second edition. It is with a black book and a girl sitting in the front. It also says professional techniques for video and cinema. Not sure if they have another edition but this one was second hand used already but mine was in great condition. Books are helpful cause it has hidden techniques that you tubers do not use. I am assuming cause CZcams is like a trend thing for video tutorials. Keep your books by your side especially even in the post room cause you never know when you need to sneak it.

    Don't we all have that dilemma at sometime?
    rough cut/grade 1, 2,3
    fine cut/grade, 1,2,3
    final, 1,2,3
    lock off .....
    This has been very stimulating, thank you 👍

    Amazing. It shows that you can have the best camera in the world and lighting but until you learn to grade properly you won't ever showcase the true potential of a shot.

    • @SergeGolikov
      @SergeGolikov Před 5 lety +11

      @Kévin Miller The "we'll fix it in Post" philosophy is very dangerous to the total creative process.
      Cinematography, Lighting, Set Design, Choice of Optics and formerly choice of Film Stocks;
      cannot be simply dismissed out of hand by thinking you can create anything and everything in Post!
      It just doesn't work that way, life is not VR, at least not to the extent that transhumanists would like you to believe.

    • @bullettin
      @bullettin Před 3 lety +8

      @Kévin Miller The colorist will need good material to work with, which is why a quality camera and lighting are necessary. If there isn't enough data in the video, it is heavily compressed, or it is all the same color, uniformly underexposed, etc., the image will not hold up under the extreme changes necessary to correct the shot.

    Now one seems to address that when you adjust the color's and contrast etc it will add noise.To get rid of the noise you start to soften the picture?? Now what?? Back and forth to reach a happy medium??

    • @4FrameMusic
      @4FrameMusic Před 7 lety +10

      It's most likely that you are not using RAW uncompressed footage with a Log color space, which almost every colorist will require, and almost every professional film will be shot in. RAW in Log format videos will 99% never break or fall apart (aka add noise) just by simply increasing contrast/color.

    • @thinkingoutloud3757
      @thinkingoutloud3757 Před 6 lety +2

      4FrameMusic - Sure, but it could make existing noise more pronounced, depending on the shot.
      Chuck - You could use a good denoiser, which the paid version of Resolve has built-in, or there are plugins that do it in other software. Another technique is to reduce hues where the grain is most prominent. There's also a channel-combining technique to try to "cancel out" a bunch of the grain. It's somewhere on CZcams, I remember seeing it a long time ago.

    • @m1nt9reen
      @m1nt9reen Před 6 lety +1

      or better still, ignore it. ppl are too obsessed with noise reduction when it's often a better idea to just leave it there. Misuse of noise reduction can make shots look terrible

    • @mistereuphemist8487
      @mistereuphemist8487 Před 6 lety +15

      His 3rd display is a reference monitor, not a standard computer monitor. They're are or should be calibrated to get correct color representation. To use with Resolve you need a Blackmagic IO card. The cheapest one is the Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Monitor. it has SDI and HDMI outputs. When connected you go into Resolve, preferences, system, Video & Audio IO and you will the the device listed in "For capture and playback use". Select it and you your 3rd full screen monitor.
