    Padang is known throughout Indonesia to have the best Indonesian food but few tourists visit. I came here for a week and it turned into a month and I've been back so many times. You can have rendang anywhere in Indonesia but it is not the original recipe from Padang, which will blow you away.
    These 5 iconic Padang foods show you the history of Padang as a port city with influences from India, Pakistan, Malaysia, China along with some modern Padang foods.
    It's a special place and I have so many videos from here on the Indonesia playlist.
    You can support my work at / ayngelina where I share tips that don't make it into videos and behind the scenes content.

    Terbalik sih kalau dibilang Padang dapat pengaruh dari Malaysia, karena orang Malaysia (khususnya orang Semenanjung) adalah perantau dari Indonesia yang menetap disana (khususnya dari Sumatera & Riau, termasuk dari Padang juga).

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před 7 měsíci

      Anda benar, Malaysia juga memiliki banyak pengaruh Minangkabau, dimulai dari para guru yang bekerja di Malaysia pada masa kolonial. Berkali-kali di Malaysia kita mendengar bahasa gaul Minang di Malaysia yang lucu karena mereka tidak tahu itu bahasa Minang karena sudah lama ada di sana.

      @@ayngelina the Minangkabaus were at war with the Javanese for centuries. They got earlier interaction with the Malay Peninsula when they migrated in 13th -14th.century, where nearly simultaneously the Javanese also started coming to the Malay Peninsula. The Minang only started migrating to Java island around 18th.century. amazingly, the Javanese & the Minangs in Malay Peninsula get along well from the very beginning 😀

    Padang Soto is delicious, but I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for saying this...I respect the process of creating Rendang but it's not as fantastic as all the hype around it makes it out to be in my opinion. If you like fish Fjua is great place to go, but make sure you only go if they have freash fish outside ready to be weighed. Enjoy your time in Padang it's a hidden gem out here! :)

      Oooh thank you for the seafood tip. I come from the coast of Canada so fresh is essential. I completely get what you are saying about rendang. When it's cooked the traditional way it is amazing. But honestly some places are just ok. And outside Padang I find them forgettable. I do want to try it in Malaysia to see how different it could be.

  • @iskhrm1688
    @iskhrm1688 Před 7 měsíci +2

    When u arrive Malaysia, you can try Lemang (sticky rice cooked in bamboo with coconut milk), eaten with Rendang (Beef or chicken),the typical food from Negeri Sembilan state where the people migrated from Padang some 700 hundred years back. You can buy packet ready made Lemang & Rendang from Sogo supermart (Lemang Lemak Zarina). Need only 1 minute microwave heating.

    • @ayngelina

      Where do you think is the best rendang in Malaysia?

    • @iskhrm1688
      @iskhrm1688 Před 7 měsíci

      @@ayngelina not sure 'bout the best, because there r many types of Rendang in Malaysia, e.g. Rendang Tok (sweeter taste) from Perak, Rendang Negri that use Cili Padi (bird's pepper), Rendang Hitam, Rendang Rempah (use curry) etc. Nevertheless u may try Nasi Padang Kampung Baru, Sederhana, Nasi Kapau at TAR Road. Even Wanjo, Madam Kwan, Peranakan Place at NU Sentral, Bijan Bar & Resto, Tumis At Teak5 do serve Rendang too.

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před 7 měsíci

      Rendang tok sounds like rendang in Java as everything is sweeter there

    • @iskhrm1688
      @iskhrm1688 Před 7 měsíci

      @@ayngelina yup possibly the influence from Java. Especially Kelantan foods, nearly identical to the Javanese in term of the sweetness. Historical link due to the brotherly connection between the Kelantan Sultanate & Majapahit kingdom long ago.

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před 7 měsíci

      They influence each other as neighbours. Some food you see in Padang like Roti Canai originated in Malaysia but indeed there is a lot of Minangkabau culture, food and words in Malaysia.

    • @talubarendo3706
      @talubarendo3706 Před 7 měsíci

      @@ayngelina i dont wanna sound childish but roti canai which in malaysia or in indonesia are actually come from Chennai, India. For context, Malaysia has 2 original race or culture, Malay and Dayak, and both of them also exist in Indonesia and they are just small part of indonesian culture. So its very little possibility that Malaysia influences Indonesia in term of traditional culture including food.

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před 7 měsíci +1

      It actually doesn’t exist in Chennai, but Indian immigrants brought it to Malaysia and it made its way to Padang. And it’s actually more like a bread in Kerala not Chennai. That said some people do argue it came to Aceh earlier than that.
      I know there is a complicated relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia and it was interesting to see how Alan was treated in Malaysia. It wasn’t always great but he did love Kuala Lumpur. But the truth is both countries influenced each other because of trade and immigration.
