What is a cow box? :P Plus can't wait for the music release!
hahah i messed that one up I meant cacao powder or flour. if you fill it into another container you shake to make it even and get more space. same with mixing :)
Urban Dictionary: cow box
Place where one stores sexual pleasures
hahah didn't know about that :)
Classic Jon Sine ... I remember this studio!
Hey Guys I made a mistake - translated the German version wrong this video is about getting the levels right and not really about gain staging. sorry hope it still helps :)
this was really help ful with all the small detaills you covered. thanks a bunch
MAJOR KEY ALERT!!!😂😂
I was going to mention about gain staging when I read your comment lol. Gain staging is about setting input levels of all of the tracks before it goes into the channels properly. Before the fx, processing and volume fader. I usually opt for between -12 and -18db peak which at -18 or so roughly translates as 0db vu. I use Cubase and before mixing I set all volume faders to zero and use the gain input to make a rough static mix. That was you have most control overall and better signals going into the processors. If you look at the scale on the faders you have most control the nearer to 0 you get so it makes sense to try to keep the faders in that general area. Aim for around -6 on the master channel. I tend to put a vu meter on the master set to -14 db and aim for no more than 0db. Great channel btw Jon.
Awesome video as always! ;)
Totally agree Jon! And the wasabi nuts are really the best! :D
Nice vid!!!!
That's great after working you go out for a bit. That's what I do for networking purposes. Luckily my studio is in a downtown area
Mate i just got a pair of new Yamaha HS8 monitors, do you turn them off(Power button) every time you are not working?
Keep your good work, thanks and kind regards !
no I have a plug with a switch in between next to my desk
Jon the intro track with Aron is great! I hear you've changed some stuff which is super dope
thanks it's still not done but heading into the right direction
cliff notes: shake the flour till its all even.
Hi John! How to eq a main loop in a song in conjunction with bass guitar?Best Regards from Transilvania,Dracula's Land!
I agree a mix without an accent or an enfasis can sound flat and with no dynamic range
what mac pro is that in the background? and what is your macbook specs?
Thanks Jon! I have a tip for the bass and kick, use a VU meter on the master channel or on a bus channel from kick and bass, solo the kick and set the VU so it hits -3db, then add the bass when the VU hits 0db your done.
www.masteringthemix.com/blogs/learn/118131269-how-to-balance-kick-and-bass-in-a-mix
I've heard of this before too bad he cant do this if he's already setting his kick to -4db lmao he'd be instantly in the red when looking at a VU meter.
I know backseat producing is frowned upon, but personally, I think that the final warning track needs like a really hard sidechain and also more hat rolls... if you don't want to go in that direction I'd love to do a remix if that's ok? idk I just have a really cool idea for it
thanks for the input yes the track still needs a lot of work.
HI JON! :)
Good advice here Jon. Getting the levels of individual instruments right is a real challenge. A small point about terminology though: your video is not really about gain staging. You're looking at the question, How loud should the kick be relative to the bass? Gain staging is about the question, How loud should the kick be at the different stages of the signal flow? E.g. the gain of the kick can be adjusted at the individual audio clip level, by adjusting the channel input control, or the channel fader, the input and output gains of any plugins on the kick channel, and so on. Gain staging is about getting the levels right at the different stages of the signal flow, so that (unwanted) distortion is avoided, and the signal is going into plugins at the optimum level.
hey thanks I translated it wrong from the German version. your right will change the title. thank you :)
34 channels is what an intro of one song of mine uses, only the intro xD
yeah I also usually have more still not done with the track all fx and layers are still missing
can I need a graphic card for music production and run a DAWS
try sidechaining the chords it would sound better jon
I thought gainstaging and leveling were two different things as in most of the CZcams tutorials they are exposed as two separate stages of mixing.
Is it possible that my mixes sound so messy because so many Instruments are playing at one time?
will be in the Q&A
Maybe no one speaks about it because when you apply an eq to a channel you are gaining or reducing frequencies and that's where the gain staging gets messed up like you need to do it all over again
I usually do everything I can just with the volume and if a certain element sits in the mix except for maybe the top frequencies I will use an eq to raise them or do whatever is needed to fix the problem.
Usually you need to scoop a lot of low ends from instruments that are getting in the way of the bass..
you reduce volume..so what do you do next?
if you are gain staging everything before eqing and compressing you are going to mess it all up with the eq usage
i do all of the low cuts already while writing the track it's done really fast and helps to keep everything in check. this was the first time getting the levels right next will be eqing compression than again the levels. it's always a back and fourth no Mather with what you start first
so yeah, i got that right..
thanks for responding :)
can someone help me out with vocals? got a couple of tracks in mind, check my channel to see me previous work. also, I'm pretty flexible with genres so hit me up with anything in mind, thanks guys!
Why you don't monetizes your videos?
-4db?? Are you insane lmao You need somewhere between 6db to 10db headroom to master and the first thing you going to do is set your kick at -4db?? LMAO
boring boring... its your life or a tutorial??
You do too much talking instead of illustration.
