Korean Immigration Horror Story | BBC Reporter Complains of "Awful" and Abusive Experience

  • One of the most overlooked government agencies that continues abusive practices from the past is Korea's immigration office. Almost everybody has had a traumatic experience but doesn't talk about it because of fear that their visa will be denied. Well, a BBC World correspondent tweeted about her 'awful' and verbally abusive experiences with Korean immigration and many echoed her sentiments. Perhaps a white lady is just the crusader we need because they certainly disregard the complaints of Korean Americans.
For a nation so embedded into the international economic and security framework, it is laughable that our immigration system is on the level of a third-world military junta. Do you know you actually have to use Windows Internet Explorer to use the website and are required to buy actual stamps to pay your fees (not postage stamps) to lick and stick on your documents? One foreign resident said he was told parts of the system were deliberately made a mess by a disgruntled employee on his way out right before retirement! That place needs an overhaul and major accountability!
Where to start? Why not benchmark the local government offices where things run extremely smoothly and efficiently? Officials there are required to attach their name to all documents they handle. There's immediate accountability and a paper trail to the employee with whom you worked. It's a practically free solution and it will allow the staff there to take responsibility to fix their own problems and give the public the power to call out abusive staff and have the evidence for it.

I can totally relate. I was at Consulate General of the Republic of Korea last August, and I got one of the worst treatments of my life. The young lady at the front desk was not only not helpful, but RUDE.

I have a business idea for koreans, that might help foreigners out in other situations: "Rent an Ajumma". I mean in Japan, you can rent an entire family, so why not rent an Ajumma to help you out in weird situations. When you arrive at the airport, there should be a little department and it just has Ajummas waiting like taxi drivers. You can go in, pick one, maybe have a little chat about her experience and level of karen-energy before...get a little demonstration of "I wanna speak to the manager!", you pay her and done. She doesnt have to be with you all the time, just have her on call. Whenever someone messes with you during your trip, act like they dont understand you and want to take you for a bs-ride, you pull out your professional Ajumma. ...with a tight perm and flashy floral clothes.

LOVE this video, Sean! I am so glad this topic was finally discussed. I lived in Korea working for a global consulting firm; renewing my resident ID at the immigration office was always a headache. I often found Very rude officials, inconsistent requirements... and very confusing processes.
Sean, I LOVE your journalism work, I have followed your work since you were at Arirang - I am big fan of your storytelling style.

‘Please don’t abuse our employees’ in known everywhere in the UKs NHS. It’s so sad, our beloved free healthcare staff have to ask patients to not verbally abuse them. I mean the NHS is extremely frustrating and most of the time you are left wanting to scream at someone 😂 but it shouldn’t be the poor nurses and doctors who are probably on hour 14 of their way too long way too busy shift

That's a horrible process. Getting paperwork done is already an inconvenience. Ive crossword the U.S. - Mexico border hundreds of times and it's very rare when you get a customs officer that's nice. They hate their jobs and they're going to take it out on you.

Call UK DPD and listen to their public request for politeness instead of......just listen if it's still the same :) But they literally didn't call me back anyway, despite any promises and losing my delivery, claiming they couldn't find my address with a literal postcard through my letterbox!!!

Omg story of my life here in Korea. They truly made you suffer too 😔. You didn't talked about the part where they like to call you non Korean when they want and Korean only when they feel the need too. You made me laugh a lot cause I truly feel it! Thanks a lot for talking about it and I wish the lady makes a petition so all foreigner here could protest. Not speaking of anti discrimination law non existing..
I am living in Korea for more than 4 years now. I have a loooot of work experience in my country and graduated with a Korean major. When I came to the immigration since the first time they try to find even the word different from their text books. I had to come back like about 4 times for some papers not told nor by the website nor by the 1345. The last time I came the lady took my head menacing me to send officers to check my work place because the name of my work place changed 🙃 I work at the same place for 2 years haha. I stayed about 1h and half explaining her that's just the name that changed not my work. But probably because of it I won't be able to renew my visa in June. Apart from the horror and the unpleasantness of the workers, the new base for E visa people that wants to change to F visa are getting crazy. Like salaries must be very high.
Positive point : the 1345 is a bit nicer...
We must be a bit S/M living here cause it's truly a lot lot lot of stress renewing this s...

You are way better than me I would seriously fix that person. If you have to do this often I would invest in an external backup hard drive and save all my files that I don't won't others to access or have another computer or laptop in case they have to remotely access your laptop. I would only have two files on the laptop.
One folder that had all my files containing information that needed to be uploaded. I would have another folder that says Government Documents and make up a bogus file that had words like "Classified Information", "Contains Sensitive Information" and "For Official Use Only Information". So after that person called themselves copying all my folders and files and obtaining information that they had no business copying I would tell them thank you for helping me and don't be surprised if a US government official contacts you for coping that government folder that has tracker info on it that only certain people with security clearance is allowed to see. OK, Bye! 👋

Oh I better not even start on immigration office haha... I mean it is not that I complain really but every country has issues with them. My experiences with Norwegian immigration office are over all great but there is a problem in the system that is not connected to Norway itself but EU. You see EU as we all could see especially during past two months, is very hypocritical and full of double standards. There is not such thing as equality nor universal treatment of all nations in Europe. That is EU nations are gods and rest of Europe are third world countries. So much about their democratic values. But to get to the point. If you apply for example for working residence permit the requirements will be different depending on: job contract, your income, if you have children, if you are married and from where you come from etc. Now I could understand everything except where you come from. They have sub groups in this category such as EU, EEA and non EU. For me this is a nonsense. If they wanted to separate Europe from other continents ok fine, but why put EEA because not all countries in Europe are members of EU or EEA. So if you live in Europe but your country is not member of EU or EEA you are treated as a third world country. You will need to collect A LOT of papers. I mean why this discrimination among Europeans? Do they mean that lets say people from Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Bosnia, Serbia, North Macedonia etc are less trust worthy than somebody from Germany, Spain, Italy, France, UK ...? Some counties like Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are not in EU but are in EEA so they basically have the same rights as EU members if they want to travel to EU. So there you have it, a discrimination among Europeans and then people wonder why we always have wars in Europe. They say oh this is administration thingy blah blah. I disagree, I just find this very insulting as if they (EU) want to put you down by letting you know that as long as you are not one of them, your life is going to be harder. You will need to collect double the amount of documents to prove you are good to go if you understand what I mean. . Again this is not the problem of Norway and their government per se but more the problem are regulations that are imposed by EU and Norway just have to follow them. People who work in Norwegian immigration office are very helpful and never ever yelled at me. They definitely have the patience and even try to find a translator for newcomers or refugees who do not speak Norwegian yet, no matter where they come from. So the service you get is like top notch but the regulations itself need to be changed.
